Designing for a coastal life
Just 250 metres from Perth’s Scarborough Beach, 200 West Coast Highway rethinks the conventional residential high-rise through a form shaped by its coastal setting, climate and views.
The 246-apartment community is a first for the area, providing 37 affordable rental homes and marking our first collaboration in Western Australia with Perth-based practice @plus.studio.co.

✨ A free day going behind the scenes at a professional ballet company? Don’t mind if I do! 🩰
This month, we hosted @opencity_uk’s Open House Festival and welcomed over 1,500 people into our home at the Mulryan Centre for Dance in Canning Town.
If you joined us, you might have watched our Company dancers take their morning class and rehearse, gone behind the scenes of an orchestral masterclass led by @kingsleylin_conductor, explored the building on a tour with @howells_makes, taken part in an adult ballet or family workshop, discovered our archival exhibitions, or put on your dancing shoes for a Bhangra Ceilidh with @the_efdss.
And that’s just the beginning!
However you enjoy the power of dance, there’s something for you at English National Ballet.

Making Waterfronts Work
Our waterfront projects combine architecture, landscape, ecology and infrastructure to create places that are distinctive, resilient and rooted in their surroundings.
At #EdenDock, we've reimagined the district's historic dock infrastructure while enhancing greenery and #biodiversity.
Since opening, the project has delivered a 55% biodiversity net gain, with native planting, fish refuges, bird boxes and a marine monitoring station creating new habitats for wading birds, waterfowl, songbirds, bees, eels and other species. This nature-led approach has helped moderate local temperatures, contributing to a 10% reduction in urban heat and a 100% increase in predicted ecosystem service value.

Making Waterfronts Work
As temperatures rise, the value of being beside water becomes harder to ignore, and while waterfronts are among the most complex places to regenerate, they also offer some of the greatest opportunities in city-making.
At #PortLoop we worked with a diverse group of stakeholders to develop a manifesto for a liveable, connected neighbourhood rooted in wellbeing.
The area's canal infrastructure is now one of Birmingham's community paddlesports hubs, hosting regular kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding, including AquaPaddle's timed 5km social paddles.

Making Waterfronts Work
As temperatures rise, the value of being beside water becomes harder to ignore, and while waterfronts are among the most complex places to regenerate, they also offer some of the greatest opportunities in city-making.
Over the last decade, we’ve transformed sites from working wharves once at the centre of global trade to abandoned canal-side yards. Now that these places are occupied, the importance and the allure of the #waterfront for daily living are clear.

Tatton Services breaks ground
We’re delighted to see work has officially begun on #TattonServices.
Designed for Westmorland Family, the new generation of #motorwayservices will transform the site into a landscape-led destination centred around a new Farmshop, Kitchen and Fuel Barn, rooted in the character of the Cheshire countryside.
Rather than treating the #landscape as a backdrop, the masterplan brings architecture and nature together to reconnect the site with its agricultural heritage while responding to its unique position within the regional road network.
There is a real emphasis throughout the project on making things well; creating buildings that feel robust, welcoming and rooted in their landscape, alongside planting and outdoor spaces that will establish and mature over time. #Sustainability is an important part of that thinking too, influencing how the buildings are made, how the landscape performs and how the place will operate in the years ahead.
The project will also deliver significant economic benefits for the local area, filling an important gap in the regional services network while creating a distinctive new gateway to #Cheshire.
We can’t wait for the vision to take shape over the coming months.

Congratulations to the Howells Summer School ‘Class of 2026’!
Last week we welcomed a new group of aspiring architects and designers to our studios in both Birmingham and London for our 2026 Summer Schools.
Working on two live design briefs, the students embraced the challenge of thinking like architects from day one. In Birmingham, they reimagined the space between Howells and the @ehsmitharch Smith Design Centre as a new destination for Digbeth, while in London they designed pavilion buildings for the St Pancras Hospital site.
The breadth of ideas was remarkable. Their proposals included cafés, libraries, galleries, shops, youth clubs, sports facilities, open-air cinemas, public gardens, roof terraces and flexible community spaces. Sustainability ran throughout the projects, with thoughtful use of materials, planting and green spaces showing just how instinctively this generation is thinking about the future.
It has been genuinely inspiring to see so many talented young people approach the challenges with such imagination, confidence and energy. Their ideas always inspire us and reminded us that great design starts with curiosity, collaboration and a willingness to question.
A huge thank you to everyone across Howells who gave their time throughout the week by leading workshops, mentoring students, modelmaking, sharing their experience and judging the final presentations. And to our partners at EH Smith, @solusceramics and @bhamcitycouncil for helping make this year's Summer School such a rewarding experience.
Finally, thanks for all our incredible students. We look forward to seeing where the Class of 2026 goes next.

With its unique radial plan The Octagon brings generous daylight into a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, including tenure-blind affordable homes. With eight apartments per floor, each enjoys a full 13-metre facet of the octagon, opening interiors to light and expansive outlooks across Birmingham. The result is a sense of individuality and scale rarely found in city living.
At ground level, an elegant triple-height volume forms the social heart of the building, and this shared space combines scale with intimacy, setting the tone for this unique residential community.
Natural materials such as cork and timber are complemented by soft colour palettes and tall planting, creating interiors that feel both welcoming and restorative.

Living reshaped
The Octagon represents the next generation of high-rise living in Birmingham: a residential tower that rethinks conventional typologies through a design that is both efficient and distinctive.
Sitting on Birmingham’s central ridge and rising to 49 storeys, the distinct and smart structure adds a striking new form to the skyline, clearly marking the northern gateway to the city’s commercial core and civic centre, Paradise.
Working within the confines of an apex-shaped site prompted an exploration of unconventional geometries, leading to a “pure” octagonal plan. This highly efficient plan delivers significant savings when compared to similar residential high-rises, with a reduced façade area relative to the floorplate, lower wall-to-floor ratios, and lower embodied carbon.
Visible from across the city and beyond, The Octagon reinforces Paradise as the place where Birmingham meets, celebrates, and looks to the future.

We are delighted that The Octagon has been shortlisted for a World Architecture Festival Award.
Located at Paradise #Birmingham, The Octagon rethinks what a residential tower can be. Its distinctive eight-sided form is not simply an architectural gesture; it improves efficiency, reduces material use, increases daylight and creates better homes for residents.
As Birmingham’s first #skyscraper, the project demonstrates how geometry, engineering and #placemaking can work together to deliver a more #sustainable and enduring model for city living.
Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing The Octagon to life. We look forward to presenting the project on the global stage at this year's World Architecture Festival.
