Round 2.5 of returning to the same objective in the Garhwal Region with @fanny_schmutz.
In 2023, we switched objectives mid-trip due to exceptionally dry conditions in the range and rain lines reaching nearly 6000m, but also because we were visually drawn to a new line. It wasn’t a great season for mixed climbing objectives in this zone.
We returned in 2024 and climbed all but 250m of a beautiful and difficult new line on Mount Shivling. We couldn’t stop thinking about this face and figured we’d probably never climb something as aesthetically beautiful as the route we’d started, warranting another return.
This season we returned as a team of three, with @lise_billon joining Fanny and me. Lise got quite sick very early in our trip and returned to France. Conditions looked perfect for our route, so we continued as a team of two. We were acclimated and waiting for a window when we got slammed with a late September cyclone that dropped 5’ of snow in basecamp in 36 hours, followed by continuous unsettled weather.
It was a good trip, but a challenging one, and in the end we hardly put our crampons on. I suppose this line will continue to consume my mind, warranting another return.

Fun little romp up Mount Dana back in December. Matt climbed this route, possibly a first ascent, in summer conditions years before. We went back hoping to climb ice, we didn’t find much, but it was still super fun climbing it in mixed conditions

One of the most self-determined climbing stories I’ve heard.
Little Chantel dreamed of being a mountain climber and then made it happen by never accepting “no” or “you can’t do that!”
Then she worked, scraped it together, made herself available , and arrived at the summit of Denali at 19 in too-big-for-her boots and a janky ski setup.
She never looked back.
