Why climb? If you have dedicated your life to the game of gravity you ask yourself why. Your family asks why. Society asks why. The answer is unique to each person. Perhaps it doesn't need to be answered?
On a personal level it's the bonds of friendship that make this pastime a treasure. We create a team for a shared goal, the foundation of which is trust. @renan_ozturk & @jimmychin built upon this over two expeditions to Meru Peak in the Garwhal Himal. Location also taps in as an answer to the why. One sees the minuscule, a RURP placement for instance, while being surrounded by the immensity of nature. When climbing there is a "is this real" reflection that brings life into focus. We would have our "is it real" perspective after a meager dinner. Climbing activates the problem solving logical mind while at the same time being quite primal. Maybe it's some sort of biological factory setting that we were born with? Anytime your life is on the line you're living analog.
12 years ago today we reached the summit. 15 years ago we turned back near the summit. Returning to the same mountain we were reminded that the summit is what drives us, yet the process of getting there is the hidden magic of life.
Forever grateful for my family for their support of this frivolous pursuit and to the team that brought @merufilm to audiences around the world.
When I meet the occasional person for whom the film is meaningful, I'm happy that they found climbing. Yet there is pause as they are about to embark on a journey that is experienced based. And if you climb long enough you'll understand that climbing makes us pay for the summit moments with the weight of loss.
Experience, is after all, the teacher.

Chomolungma, Goddess Mother of the World, is the planet's highest peak. For the Tibetan and Sherpa people that live in the shadow and watershed of this Himalayan giant this peak is a deity.
We give thanks for mothers and mother figures on this 9th day of May. Caring love is the foundation upon which we venture out into the world. May we share it forward.
Respect for @kamiritasherpa, brother of @lrsherpa, for his 25th ascent of this mountain. Thanks to your mother for raising two fine men.

Sixty years ago on the 26th of October, The North Face opened on Columbus Avenue in San Francisco. The Grateful Dead launched the brand and the Hells Angels worked the door. The city was at the center of the 1960s counter-culture, and climbing & backpacking were part of its identity. I was born four years earlier in San Francisco, with no idea what that evening would mean for my life.
By 14, I was set on getting a Sierra Parka to go with my bell-bottom jeans and Galibier boots. In September 1983, three months shy of 21, I started working at The North Face retail store in Salt Lake City. In 1987, trusted with an American Alpine Club youth grant, we headed to the Kichatnas in Alaska, my first North Face expedition.
My climbing followed the path this iconic brand laid out. Shaped by the Sierra. Defined by Denali. Empowered by Everest.
Half Dome and El Cap, big, steep California granite, led to the walls of Alaska. Once I had the cold dialed, the Himalaya was the next step. Through all of it, the VE 25 has been my home, the Solar Flare sleeping bag my bed, the Base Camp Duffel my closet, gear room and kitchen, and the Denali and Mountain Jackets my protection from the storm.
The North Face set the standard for extreme conditions and built community along the way. The Women's Annapurna Expedition in 1978, the free climb of the Salathé Wall on El Cap in 1988 and the Trans-Antarctica Expedition in 1990 connected athlete proven with The North Face.
A quarter of the way through the 21st century, The North Face has seen climbing in the Olympics and ascents of the intimidating north face of the Himalayan giant Jannu.
I'll be long gone when the brand reaches 120, but I hope the drive to explore keeps resonating through innovative, reliable gear.
Happy 60th. Here's to the next climb.

We cherish the rare film that makes one feel good about being alive. The account of the 1953 first ascent of Everest as seen through the eyes of Tenzing Norgay is one of those films.
@appletv brings this story to life with "Tenzing". With the insight of Tenzing's sons @jamlingtenzing & @norbutenzing, director @jenpeedom brings Tenzing's story to life. With @gendenphuntsok as Tenzing, @twhiddleston as Hillary, @lhamothinley as Dawa, @caitrionabalfe as Jill Henderson and Willem Dafoe as John Hunt as actors the script is made emotionally compelling.
Respect for @eddouglas5708 for his writing. Long time friend and person of Nepal @renan_ozturk shared the photography in this carousel. He also connected the acting and the mountains with location camera. Congratulations @pemba_sharwa, @ngawang_tenjing and the entire film community of Nepal for making this happen.
Worth your time. Enjoy.

Rules to Live By comes out today. Now available wherever you buy books and through the link in my bio.
Time is the only currency we have, and all we can do is spend it. So, what are we supposed to do with the time we have? What really matters before it’s over? Each person I interviewed for this book gave an answer I didn’t see coming: they have all lived extraordinary lives on their own terms. I’m honored to have learned from their wisdom and honesty. What they did, and what I have tried to do, is find their own rules about what matters, what doesn’t, and how to tell the difference. I hope everyone can find their own answers through this book.
In stores everywhere today 9/29.

Be the person you want your kids to be! I found this unreleased scene from our expedition to Queen Maudland Antarctica. While @jimmychin and @conrad_anker forged a new route up the behemoth that is Ulvetanna Jimmy reflected on the loss of his father, and what type of father he wanted to be to his young children.

The Rasuwa floods in Nepal. The loss of life and property is immense. My heart goes out to the people of Nepal and the families who have lost loved ones.
Having been in the valley that was affected by this disaster and lost friends that I have guided with brings this event closer to home.
There are plenty of images of the flood. I'm asking the global community to help the people of Nepal in this time of need. The official Government of Nepal and Red Cross Nepal are there to help. Here in United States the @himalayanfdn has worked with flood relief.
We are all in this together.

Most unusual thing about this photo:
A. My hair - there's a lot of it!
B. Jimmy and I are not outside
C. I'm wearing regular clothes
D. We are sitting down
E. All if the above!

40 years of @thenorthface Base Camp Duffel.
Durable and reliable these duffles are the foundation of adventure. This one was a companion during the 90s and now lives as a storage duffle for the @khumbuclimbingcenter. I thought about bringing it back. As it has been part of the program since 2004, my friends in Phortse asked that it stay there. With a patina of life well lived, it's a reminder that adventure starts at the end of the road.
What's your base dump duffel story?
