Day 139, orbit 2155 — After the pictures (available in HD on my Flickr account), I'm so happy to finally share the timelapse of the most spectacular aurora of the Δpsilon mission so far!   đŸ€© Watching this glowing green ribbon shimmer and dance, it's easy to lose yourself completely in the magic of the moment. Turn the sound on for the full experience – the music was carefully chosen to bring you as close as possible to what I felt watching this from space 💚. Day 110, orbit 1705 — We put water, we shampoo, we rinse, then we let it air dry

The experiment measures how spaceflight affects the muscles and tendons in the lower legs, helping scientists understand how the human body adapts to microgravity and recovers after returning to Earth. Know someone who’d find this interesting? Share it with them! đŸ“Č Sophie took part in these post-flight tests at :envihab, the DLR research facility in Cologne, Germany. 07 Nov 2026 [đŸ‡«đŸ‡· version FR en commentaire] đŸ’Ș I exercised every day in space, pushed myself hard and feel like I came back stronger than ever! But strength is only part of the story. Without gravity constantly pulling on our bodies, our muscles and tendons are used differently, which can lead to changes not only in muscle mass and strength, but also in the way our muscles, tendons and nervous system work together. Sarcolab-3 looks at muscle volume and architecture, strength and power, tendon stiffness, as well as how muscles are activated and controlled by the nervous system, including reflex responses đŸŠ”. Measurements were taken before launch, and the first post-flight measurements took place within days of splashdown, at the @dlr.en Institute of Aerospace Medicine located next to the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany. What we learn from studying how bodies adapt to space can be useful well beyond spaceflight. By helping us better understand muscle loss and recovery, Sarcolab-3 could contribute to research into ageing, prolonged inactivity and recovery from injury here on Earth, while also helping us improve training and rehabilitation for future astronauts. Go science! 🔬 📾 @europeanspaceagency – B. Bailleul (1), ESA – M. but since then, the Expedition 75 crewmates have already performed EVA-100 and EVA-101! Congrats to the @iss teams for these 2 successful EVAs! Very happy to meet again in person the journalists who followed and covered the #Δpsilon mission, at a morning radio show đŸŽ™ïž, a press conference and the evening news đŸ“ș. It was also great to catch up with some of the @europeanspaceagency and @cnes_france communications teams for interviews you’ll soon discover on social media! In microgravity, where there is no familiar sense of up or down, the brain has to learn to interpret signals about movement, balance and orientation differently.   🧠  ESA’s Brain-DTI experiment uses advanced MRI scans to study changes in astronauts’ brains during a long-duration space mission. By comparing scans taken before and after the mission, researchers can study how the brain rewires itself to adapt to microgravity and living in 3 dimensions, and how it begins adapting back after the space mission. I had three MRIs at a @dlr.en facility during the first 15 days after my return, and will have one more in about six months.   Brain-DTI helps scientists better understand what’s behind space motion sickness (which I’m happy to say I didn’t experience!), balance and disorientation, and the knowledge gained is also helping people affected by balance disorders on Earth. Go science! 🔬 📾 @europeanspaceagency / @nasa (1), Diana Giraldo (2), ESA – M. 29 Oct 2026 From microgravity đŸ›°ïž to anti-gravity! Back at the European Astronaut Center, post-flight reconditioning included running on the anti-gravity treadmill, which, despite its name, does not actually eliminate gravity
😁 The lower body is enclosed in an air-pressure chamber. By adjusting the pressure, the treadmill reduces the load on the legs, muscles and joints, allowing you to walk or run while bearing less than your normal body weight. That was fun, but I was so happy to be actually running outside a few days after!
