How do you mourn a film?
Rumba Abstracta (1996-98), my 35mm scratched and hand-painted film, will be part of this exhibition curated by Dalina A. Perdomo Álvarez @curadoraboricua, Pedro Noel Doreste Rodríguez, and Diaspora Solidarities Lab fellows Zoe Butler, KV Bailey, Luis Prieto, and Nehemías Toro Padrón - a project of the Manchineel Project, organized with the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College and Johns Hopkins University.
In the company of Manuel Arturo Abreu, @lavaughnbelle, Ojos Caribe, Mahlet Cuff, Leandro Feal, @monicafelix, Richard Fung, @hatoreina, and @natalialassallem,
@samuelsarmientostudio, Michaëlle Sergile, and Christin Washington.
A 35mm strip wound by hand was always, for me, a way of letting memory enter the material. To find that gesture held within this Caribbean conversation
- with these artists, these curators, this question - is a quiet honor.
Photograph by my brother @joseparla in our Brooklyn studio. Represented in New York by @benrubi_gallery. Grateful to Barron Sherer and the @oolitearts community, where my film “Sporadic Germination” last lived. Full details at @msubroad.

CONTEMPORARY PALIMPSESTS @skira_arte
An expansive monograph celebrating the remarkable four-decade career of Cuban American artist José Parlá. This first midcareer publication coincides with major milestones, including solo exhibitions in Miami and Tokyo - “Homecoming” at the Pérez Art Museum Miami and “Home Away from Home” at the Pola Museum in Tokyo. The volume traces Parlá’s evolution from his early days of wall markings in Miami to his international acclaim, showcasing his innovative blend of gestural abstraction, calligraphy, and urban textures that have redefined contemporary painting.
Spanning from 1985 to 2025, the richly illustrated book features paintings, murals, rare sketchbooks, and archival materials. It also includes essays by curators Jonathan Rider and Iván de la Nuez, alongside an intimate interview with Rey Parlá, his brother and creative collaborator.
Celebrating his role as a cultural bridge, the monograph underscores his connections to a global community of friendships, travels, and collaborations. Parlá emerges as a poetic chronicler of surfaces, textures, and resilience - an artist whose work captures the luminous paths of exploration and belonging.
Available in our shops in Milan and Paris, it’s coming out in bookstores worldwide in Spring 2026.

We are deeply honored to announce that “HOMECOMING (Before Time, the First Migrations),” the namesake painting of José Parlá, exhibition at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), has been acquired into the museum’s permanent collection. This acquisition is especially meaningful, as the work speaks deliberately to the region’s geography, history, and its profound connections to Caribbean and Latin American diasporic journeys.
The process for the painting “HOMECOMING (Before Time, the First Migrations)” began in Parla’s Brooklyn studio and concluded through a series of live painting sessions at the museum. Under the brilliant curation of Maritza M. Lacayo, Associate Curator, the museum space was transformed into an extension of my studio. An immersive experience where painting materials, physical abstract gestures, and music from his vinyl record collection converged.
Our sincere thanks to Maritza; Franklin Sirmans, Sandra and Tony Tamer Director; and Fabiana Sotillo, Curatorial Assistant; and everyone who worked with such care on this exhibition including our studio family Rey Parlá, Claudia Hilda and Christian A. Mendoza.
To Miami, the place of my birth and my first home. Thank you for welcoming me back. @pamm @maritzamelania

@reyparla (b. 1971, Miami; lives and works in Brooklyn, NY) is a Cuban-American multidisciplinary artist whose work bridges experimental cinema, photography, and painting. He is best known for his distinctive “Scratch-Graph” images — a hybrid visual language that emerges from his decades of analog and conceptual experimentation.
Parlà’s creative practice grew out of his early work in hand-painted and scratched Super 8 and 35 mm films, where he manually scratched, painted, collaged, and distressed motion picture stock to generate dynamic abstract imagery. These films functioned like visual music, exploring rhythm, movement, memory, and matter.

From the archives, honored to see @joseparla’s monumental painting Pathways featured in @voguefrance’s look at five spectacular works at Art Basel Miami Beach 2024.
Vogue describes José’s practice as a decades‑long journey between abstraction and calligraphy, rooted in the walls and streets of cities from Miami, where he was born in 1973, to Brooklyn and beyond. Layers of paint, collage, and gestural script become layers of memory, migration, and Cuban‑American history.
This photograph, made in our studio by @reyparla for @parlastudios, catches José mid‑movement, building those strata of time and color.
We’re also excited to share that José Parlá: Contemporary Palimpsests, a significant new monograph from @skira_arte, is coming soon and will celebrate four decades of José’s work, with contributions by Rey Parlá, Jonathan Rider, and Iván de la Nuez.
Grateful to @voguefrance and @benbrownfinearts for championing this story. #JoseParla Photo by @reyparla

Rey Parlá, Sporadic Germination (1994), Super 8mm and Video, Color, Sound, 4:30
Sporadic Germination (1994) is a silent Super 8 “scratch film” in which Rey Parlá layered graffiti
footage from 1990s Miami with hand-painted scratches, inks, and collage on the filmstrip – creating a pulsing, abstract portrait of urban art’s transient marks, like graffiti writ in light.
It was initially a silent film, later enhanced with a collaged soundtrack made from vinyl records borrowed from the Miami-Dade Public Library. Viewers see paint and ink literally dance over scenes of Miami’s graffiti-laden ruins and as critic Michael Betancourt noted, Parla’s hand-painted films become “documents of the process of their own creation,” building up diverse marks that never fully erase the past layers.
As part of “Co-op Cohort!” A black box exhibition curated by Barron Sherer at Oolite Arts opening November 19th at 6pm. “Co-op Cohort!” runs through Miami Art Week and is on view until January 18, 2026

Guggenheim Museum
5:30-8:00pm @guggenheim
Dear friends,
Tomorrow, October 16, I’ll be joining the Center for Black Visual Culture at the Guggenheim for Late Shift, an after-hours experience where the museum comes alive with art, music, and community in observation of Hispanic Heritage Month.
I’ll be spinning an all-vinyl DJ set exploring the power of healing, in response to Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers. The set will move through the roots and rhythms of Rumba, Guaguancó, Guaracha, Bomba y Plena, and Reggaetón ☀️ sounds that carry the stories of the Caribbean diaspora, joy, and resilience.
The evening will also feature a live rumba performance by Clave y Cuba, filling the rotunda with rhythm, song, and celebration.
