CICLOS (Cycles): This September marks five years since I woke up from a coma after nearly losing my life to COVID 19.
It also marks five years since I walked back into my studio in September of 2021 and picked up a brush again. I did not know then what would come from that return. I only knew that I was alive, that I could breathe, and that I wanted to paint.
From that moment came CICLOS, a series of paintings inspired by the cycles of life, by the constant movement between sunrise and sunset, darkness and light, endings and beginnings. Every painting became a way of giving thanks for another day and honoring the incredible gift of being here.
In 2022, CICLOS was exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum as part of Brooklyn Abstraction: Four Artists, Four Walls. Seeing these paintings in a museum only a year after returning to the studio was an incredibly meaningful moment. What began as my personal journey back to life had become something I could share with a wider community.
CICLOS was also a thank you to my family, my friends, and to the doctors, nurses, therapists, and caregivers who took care of me and helped bring me back. I carry all of them with me in every painting.
Coming back to the studio felt like coming home to myself. It was a second beginning, a chance to see life with new eyes and to understand that we are never alone. We survive because of each other.
Five years later, I celebrate life, my family, my friends, my community, and all the people who gave me strength when I needed it most.
I celebrate the sun coming up every morning and going down every evening. I celebrate being here. I celebrate being able to paint.
CICLOS is my thank you. It is about life, love, comunidad, and being given another chance to begin again.
Gracias a todos los que estuvieron conmigo. Los llevo en cada pincelada.

Painted entirely from memory, Kinesthetic Memory Field began with a fleeting view of Havana from El Malecón, the sea, the sky at sunset, the layered facades, and the movement of life through the city.
As I reconstructed the image, memory reshaped it. What remains is not a document of a place, but an accumulation of impressions, translated into layers of color and gesture.
The painting also carries the weight of a particular moment in history, reflecting the ongoing turbulence between the governments of Cuba and the United States, and the uncertainties, hopes, and transformations that continue to define both countries.

Today, we remember the lives lost on 9/11, the families and communities forever changed, and the profound impact that day continues to have.
In the years since, I have thought deeply about how artists can hold memory, grief, and hope in forms that words sometimes cannot.
My painting ONE: Union of the Senses, created in 2014, is permanently on display in the lobby of One World Trade Center. The monumental work brings together movement, color, texture, and gesture as a meditation on loss, memory, connection, and renewal.
It was very important to me that this painting would reflect a massive respect for the families and for this sacred site.
Today, I think of all those whose lives were changed forever, and I hope the work can continue to serve as a gesture of remembrance, connection, and hope. @one_wtc

This diptych is a self-portrait formed from memory, endurance, and spirit. It reflects my lungs, both their fragility and their strength, and the profound feeling of surviving the induced coma I entered while battling Covid-19.
The markings echo an arterial system, layers of depth that evoke the inner landscape of the human body. Within this movement is a spiritual life force, a visual reminder of breath, resilience, and the will to return to the world.

Pathways is a reflection on life’s journeys—of migration, memory, and the spaces between. It speaks to the transitions that shape us, weaving the personal with the universal, the local with the global.
This painting was inspired by my time living between Miami and Miami Beach in the 1980s and 90s, just a few blocks away from the convention center and the Meridians exhibition. Those years were transformative, and many memories from having my first studio in that area are embedded in the layers of this work.
Each layer is a story, each brushstroke a step toward understanding the balance between belonging and becoming. It traces the invisible lines of choices and experiences, guided by the pull of roots and the promise of new horizons.
In its essence, Pathways is a homecoming—a return to what anchors us, even as we move forward. It honors the resilience of memory and the beauty of finding one’s way through the ever-shifting landscapes of life.
