The BTA Art Prize is aimed at emerging young artists aged 16-25, celebrating and supporting young creative talent. We are incredibly excited to announce that @mhpaints (Michael Harding) will be sponsoring the BTA Art Prize, offering our winning young artist much more than just a selection of high-quality art materials. As part of this fantastic opportunity, the winner will also have the chance to become involved in the prestigious Future Masters Programme, run by Michael Harding, which is dedicated to supporting and nurturing the next generation of artistic talent. From providing professional-quality paints and materials to offering valuable opportunities for creative development, exposure and recognition, this sponsorship could be a fantastic stepping stone for an aspiring artist. The art of seeing colour, understanding it, and translating it into paint. 🎨 A glimpse into last week’s Still Life Painting in Oils workshop with @sarah.margaret.gibson.art at the @ayrshireatelieroffineart Throughout the week, our students explored the principles of traditional oil painting, with a particular focus on colour theory, pigment selection, and the art of mixing colour accurately from observation. Working with a carefully selected palette of beautiful oil colours from @mhpaints , we examined the relationships between hue, value and chroma, and how an understanding of these properties can help us make more informed decisions at the easel. An important part of our approach involves pre-mixing colour strings: carefully observed progressions of colour and value, prepared on the palette before painting begins. This allows students to establish a more considered range of mixtures, understand the relationships between them, and approach their paintings with greater confidence and intention. Of course, the real magic happens when these principles are put into practice! It was wonderful to watch each student develop their understanding throughout the week, translating their observations into beautifully considered paintings of pears and figs. 🇵🇱 Jakość materiałów to dla mnie sprawa pierwszorzędna - dotyczy to nie tylko samych farb, ale również podobrazi i podkładów. Wszystkie materiały, po które sięgam w pracowni, są najwyższej klasy. Tu nie ma półśrodków ani zamienników. To dla mnie bardzo ważne.. (taka mała obsesja) 🫣 Często pytacie mnie o podkłady od @mhpaints - to niechłonne podkłady akrylowe, które tworzą trwałą, mocną bazę pod kolejne warstwy farby. Ja najczęściej nakładam je w formie nierozcieńczonej. W swojej kolekcji mam trzy odcienie: Raw Sienna Dark, Pozzuoli Red Earth oraz Titanium Buff. Siłę ich krycia oraz to, jak prześwituje spod nich szkic, możecie zobaczyć na załączonych kadrach i filmikach. A jeśli żaden z tych kolorów nie odpowiada wizji danego obrazu, sięgam po zwykłe farby akrylowe, które po prostu odpowiednio rozcieńczam. Jeśli macie jeszcze jakieś pytania o podkłady lub podłoża - śmiało zadawajcie je w komentarzach! 🇬🇧 All the materials I reach for in my studio are of the highest professional grade. There are no shortcuts or substitutes here. You often ask me about primers from @mhpaints - I usually apply them undiluted. In my collection, I have three shades: Raw Sienna Dark, Pozzuoli Red Earth, and Titanium Buff. You can see their opacity and how the initial sketch shows through beneath them in the attached photos and videos. It took an hour’s hike up into the Quiraing, carrying 25 pounds of gear — and an hour back down again afterwards. In between, this was probably one of the most physically challenging plein air paintings I’ve made. The rain came and went, the wind was relentless, and at times the gusts were so strong that both my easel and camera tripod were threatening to disappear over the edge — even with everything tethered down with tent pegs. There were a few genuinely precarious moments, and I’m incredibly grateful to the kind strangers who stopped to help me keep hold of everything when the wind really picked up. But I kept on painting. And then, between the showers, the light broke through and transformed the landscape in front of me into something spectacular. And it all became worth the strife. Though I was very glad of a warm pub and a large pint at the other end of the hike back! This painting is available.
