Lebanese by birth, French by marriage, and American by choice, artist Huguette Caland's @huguettecaland life and work defied aesthetic, social, and sexual conventions of her time.
Her work shows the influence of her untraditional way of living and representing sexuality, and of the various places she lived in her life: Beirut, Paris, and Venice Beach, California.
Although her contemporaries in Venice included Larry Bell, John Baldessari, Billy Al Bengston, and others, Caland struggled to establish artistic standing.
It's time to throw her flowers! 💐💖 Opening on September 27, lose yourself in the intricate details and cavernous folds of skin in her work, and discover a woman subsumed in the form of art in "Huguette Caland: A Life in a Few Lines."

Three glowing pupae sit suspended in transformation.
Cast in resin, the taxidermized moths are awash in an amber glow.
Powered by car batteries, Vibeke Mascini's work sits at a compelling intersection of nature and infrastructure, begging the question, where does one end and the other begin? 🐛🔌

Silver lines resemble a guitar, and thick black lines evoke a banjo. But this screenprint may reflect Mavis Pusey's experience of a crowd during one of the largest uprisings in post–World War II Europe.
Pusey was in Paris in 1968, when student demonstrations led to widespread protests and strikes against government oppression. As calm gave way to action, Pusey closed her eyes and listened to the rhythmic sounds of marching feet.
Using the outside of the painting to represent calmer times, Pusey transformed the sights and sounds of collective action into a powerful visual composition.
👀 Look closely. Can you feel the rhythm?

Lots to celebrate! 5 years of LULU at the Hammer Museum. Join Alice this Saturday for an evening of Food & Film to mark the occasion.
Come for supper, stay for Babette’s Feast. We’re serving a seasonal prix fixe menu inspired by the film before the free 7:30 PM screening at the Billy Wilder Theater, co-presented with the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Dinner reservations and details at the link in bio.
In this video, Jesse McBride and Christina Kim look back on the beginnings of LULU, and how this beautiful courtyard became a place to gather around the table.

🎬 Hammer presents MoMA Contenders continues this week with two provocative films. Two nights. One big screen.
🎨 Thursday, November 5 | I Want Your Sex
Gregg Araki returns with a wicked satire of the LA art world, where an aspiring young artist (Cooper Hoffman) lands a job with a provocative art star (Olivia Wilde)—and finds himself tangled in sex, power, and workplace politics.
🎤 Followed by a conversation with writer-director Gregg Araki.
🖤 Friday, November 6 | Obsession
Be careful what you wish for. In Curry Barker's twisted horror-comedy, a young man's romantic wish comes true—with terrifying consequences. Equal parts shocking, hilarious, and painfully observant about modern romance.
Two wildly different takes on what happens when desire takes control!
🍿 Which ones are you seeing? Save this post for your movie plans.
🎟️ Hammer Memmber tickets are now on sale, and public tickets go on sale tomorrow, Tuesday, November 3.

The people of the Renaissance were enamored with the macabre.
Psychological nightmare realms were created with the newfound anatomical precision and mathematical perspectives of the time, using the skeleton as a reminder of mortality and the limits of earthly ambition.
Marco Dente’s "Allegory of Death and Fame (The Skeletons)," made after a design by Rosso Fiorentino, crowds the living and the dead into one scene.
A winged skeleton presides over a world where bodies, bones, and allegorical figures seem to collapse the distance between life and what comes after.
Happy Halloween from all of us at the Hammer!💀🎃🖤

👀 So many intricate details in our lobby! Two series of works are presented by Mike Cloud @mikecloudartist for his Hammer Project.
Two sprawlling collages from "The Modern Timeline" series deal with what the artist sees as contemporary catastrophes. His “Painted Clothing" series addresses the relationship between childhood and consumer culture.
When you come back, take some time to examine all the beautiful, detailed features in person.

LA was such a memorable stop on the Back To Green book tour!
I loved sharing a meal with you all at Alice Waters’ restaurant, @lulurestaurantla. It was a fitting way to celebrate the farm-to-table philosophy she helped pioneer.
Thank you to @laurie.ochoa and @sandrajacksondumon for a wonderful conversation, the @hammer_museum for hosting, and everyone who joined us!
