The second edition of Design Doha is hosted partly in Fareej Al Asmakh, a historic neighborhood beautifully restored to welcome the local community. The houses here, dating mostly to the early twentieth century, give an impression of how Qataris lived then.
In this resonant setting our team, led by Fahad Al Obaidly, has installed over 25 exhibitions, architecturally-scaled commissions, and research projects.
1) Haitam Daoudi and Cruz.atelier, Cooling Pots. A canopy of terracotta pots mounted on steel armatures, adapting a historic method of cooling to provide microclimate shelter.
2) HouHou, Monumental: A Monobloc’s Memoir. One of a series of transformations of the ubiquitous plastic chair, which the artist describes as “an everyday object embedded in collective Arab memory.”
3) Matin Hassan, “Between Us: A Form of Encounter.” Public courtyard seating by this talented Iranian designer, who is also a crucial member of the Design Doha team!
4) Meriem Chabani / NEW SOUTH, Salsabil. An encircling installation of ceramic spheres, again drawing on historic cooling methods.
5) Ghadeer Mohammed, The Muqarnas of Sadu. Inspired both by a traditional method of architectural embellishment and regional weavings - but made with inexpensive metal moldings. Presented by Al Sadi Society.
6) Bahraini Danish, “Aluminum, Worked.” One of a series of minimalist sculptures developed for “Post Oil,” a study into resource extraction led by the Saudi design collective BrickLab.
7) Abdalla Almulla, Palm Construct. A hybridization of traditional khoos weaving techniques and vernacular palmwood construction.
8) Boo Design Studio, Shared Ground. A dynamic distortion and super-sizing of the rattan mats traditionally encountered in a majlis tent.
9) India Mahdavi, Bishop (on plinth) in granite. Originally created in 1999, the Bishop is an emblematic object in Mahdavi’s extraordinary career. This incarnation is made from Egyptian Aswan granite.
10) Carl Gerges Architects, Echoed Doha. A monumental stone seat surveys our site.

Fernando Laposse’s exhibition “The Sower,” organized for Design Doha in collaboration with the Year of Culture program.
As an extension of his integrated practice of design and agriculture - focused on sustainable growth of agave fiber, avocado skin, maize, cochineal, and loofah - he has undertaken an exchange of seeds from Mexico to Qatar. These are presented in a wall of vessels, suggestive of a vault or ark. It’s a gesture of cross cultural solidarity based on the concept of food sovereignty.

Shaha Raphael’s powerful “Do You Remember 0.9 Million Years Ago?” - a highlight of Arab Design Now 2026.
This sprawling set of table forms is handcrafted in Beirut from volcanic basalt sourced in northern Lebanon. The atmospheric images seen here show the work in progress; its final contours suggest natural processes of geological formation and erosion. In the exhibition, the work is shown alongside a beautiful film entitled “Between Two Fields of Lava” by Malek Hosni, which immerses the viewer in a blended montage of landscape and craft.

Design Doha! And a preview of “Arab Design Now 2026,” opening tomorrow. Curated by Noura Al Sayeh, the brilliant Palestinian (Bahrain-based) architect, the exhibition is a mind blowing survey of 81 design practices from the Middle East, North Africa and the Arab diaspora.
There is a wealth of newly commissioned work, much of it accompanied by in-depth videos documenting the places and people that brought the works into being.
The exhibition is on through the end of the year and is accompanied by a full exhibition catalogue from @kaph.books
Images:
1) Mohammed Nahleh and Rana Haddad, “Of Abundant Ashes,” soap and steel. The pavilion is inspired by the Lebanese practice of making soap from the ash of bombed orchards, a gesture of resistance
2) Shireen Taweel, “Calculations for Movement,” pierced sheet copper
3) ceramic by leading Lebanese sculptor Nathalie Khayat
4) work in Egyptian alabaster by Omar Chakhil
5) Mohamed Amine Hamouda’s shaggy towers of Tunisian natural plant fibers
6) totems by Karim & Elias made of rammed desert sands in contrasting hues
7) Abdulrahman Al Muftah, rising design star here in Qatar, has made a food storage tower paying tribute to local crafts
8) Aya Haidar depicts Palestinian plants using needle punching: cactus, iris, and Jaffa oranges
9) Mehdi Dakhli’s “Reversed Memories—Muralla Roja” cabinet reprises forms from Ricardo Bofill’s complex, itself inspired by North African architecture. A sophisticated act of re-appropriation
10) Shaikha Al Sulaiti’s “Petals of the Past,” evoking the welcoming space of the Arabic majlis by combining traditional motifs from carpet weaving and embroidered pillows
11) Roham Shamekh’s epic “Eden Garden” table, based on a motif found on a historic Iznik dish in the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha
12) Tahir Sultan’s fabric furniture is inspired by hardy desert wildflowers in Kuwait. One of these pieces is a functional fridge and the other opens to reveal a cabinet!
More images coming tomorrow…

A studio visit with Julian Stair in south London. The work is even more divine in person, quietly self-effacing, yet communicating deep connection to the most significant waystations of earthly life.
Julian’s next show at Corvi Mora, opening on Thursday 12 November, will see him exploring a range of seating forms - a major departure in some ways from his decades long investigation of pottery, but also a logical development of his interests in metaphorical function and embodied form. I’ll be writing for the show and will post images - just wait til you see!

Also at MKG Hamburg right now (in addition to “Hella Jongerius: Whispering Things”), a retrospective of the photographer Hans Hansen. A master of the choreographed still life, he has brought his precise yet witty approach to a huge range of independent and commercial projects.

Congratulations to Mathias Bengtsson, whose “Membrane Chair” has been selected as best contemporary work at Design Miami Paris.
I first encountered this Stockholm-based designer through his Slice chair in layered plywood (1999), an early demonstration of the power of digital tools. It paid tribute to earlier form-givers like Verner Panton while pushing the boundaries of technology at the time. There’s a clear link to this latest amazing work in stainless steel; it feels as much propagated as constructed.
Presented at the fair by Galerie Maria Wettergren.
