Going through my old phone to nuke it and maybe sell it but came across all of the old photos that I took when I was still very actively advocating Zero Waste. I have hundreds (heh, thousands) of photos of all sorts of things that I never got around to posting— things I grew and harvested, plantbased cheeses and butter that I made, etc. This was my shelf of ferments over the pandemic. Kombucha, kefir, and different kinds of fruit vinegar. I even made red wine vinegar at one point with vegan sulfite-free wine that was gifted to me after I did a talk about sustainability for a large bank. I miss those days. I miss feeling "able" and having the energy to create things. I miss having the desire to change the world for the better. I hope I get that version of myself back one day.
ETA:
I know different ferments aren't supposed to be within close proximity of each other, but my kefirs were closed ferments. I also kept these going for about a year and they tasted great until we got tired of them.

Happy solstice and yule, mortals and fools!
Rocco Mapua and I suck at taking pictures of ourselves, but here's a picture of one of our floof companions with our old black yule tree.

Make your basic bowl of oats look fancy with Homegrown Edible Flowers ™️! They won't add much in terms of flavour, but they'll make breakfasts in your cheap-ass decade-old IKEA bowls look pretentious and restaurant-worthy! So what are you waiting for? Grow your own edible flowers now and make the stuff that you eat look better than they taste!!! HAHAHA!
🏵️🌸🌺
Okay. Serious post:
This bowl has got whole oats, an assortment of nuts, seeds, and dried fruit from the pantry, some leftover fruit in the fridge (today, it's half a mango), a splash of coconut cream, coconut sugar (not WFPB but we ain't perfect), and whatever flowers were/are blooming in the garden. Most of the time, we put blue butterfly pea flowers, but sometimes we put calamansi flowers, talinum flowers, mustard flowers...
This is one of the things we make when we don't have the EQ to prepare food in the morning, because it's one of the easiest breakfasts to cobble together from scratch. It also looks pretentiously fancy, when it's actually really cheap. (We make so many things with whole oats— from burger patties, to savoury "oatscaldo" with mushrooms and carrots and things.)
As usual, the things we eat do not contain any meat or dairy, and we try to source ingredients package-free (or in bulk) whenever possible, so our meals are less taxing on the planet. Contrary to what most people believe, eating lower on the food chain and more consciously can be pretty, easy, and inexpensive too.
PS:
We make overnight oats too sometimes, but prefer making things on the fly because we're fickle about what we want to eat in the morning. Haha. I may want oats before going to bed and have the foresight to prep shit— only to wake up wanting something else for breakfast. *nervous laugh*

Captain Pablo Hippopotamo Tordesillas Catbutts hides his 23-inch waistline well. Oh and do you know that his forehead and belly smell like maple-glazed donuts?
The skinny orange next to him is Captain Roadkill Kutoboro Mabini Catbutts. "Roadie" smells like baby powder. At least that's what he smells like when he doesn't smell like the laway of another cat. 😑
Someone once told me that their cat's forehead smelled like cinnamon. What do your cats' heads and bellies smell like?

Nothing, really. Just a couple of playful bees and a bunch of mustard flowers on our roof deck garden. We all need eyebleach these days, yeah? You're welcome. Haha.
I realize I haven't posted anything in a very long time. I haven't had the EQ to share anything, although I do have tons of photos and videos just sitting in my phone. I don't know if I'll ever get around to posting all of them.
I've been off social media, for the most part. I haven't been doing all that great, but I'm working on myself and I'm making some progress. Our vegetable garden is struggling, too. Combating whitefly attacks feels like an exercise in futility every summer, and they make our tomato plants sick, literally (i.e. infect the plants with viruses, etc).
I hope you're all doing okay. If you have the time and the energy to, do visit our little store www.druidthings.com ? We haven't had any visitors lately, and every purchase you make there helps sustain me and what I do.
Thanks for sticking around! I'll try to comb through my gallery (of mostly cat photos) and post more stuff in the coming days. If you guys like cat photos, I can post some of those too. *shifty eyes*

Ran out of flour so we had to make a pan de sal run this morning. The people at this bakery's branch know us because we've been refusing their paper bags and using our own containers when buying bread from them for years. Whenever I waltz in, they automatically just take my container and dump 20 large pieces of pan de sal in. No paper bags to cut trees for, no staple wires to mine zinc and steel for, no non-biodegradable scotch tape to put into an ecobrick. I also pay using G-Cash so the transaction is contactless, more or less paperless compared to other payment methods, and I plant trees using their G-Forest feature. Sure, paper is biodegradable. But just because something is biodegradable, doesn't mean it isn't wasteful. Do you know that the production of single-use paper bags actually has higher carbon and water footprints than the production of single-use plastic bags? Think of all of the water, chemicals, fuel, energy, etc. used in the production of disposable products— it doesn't matter if it's paper, plastic, aluminium, or worse, a combination of all 3 (i.e. Tetra Pak). Where do all of the materials come from? How are they processed? And where do they go when they're done serving their "purpose"? We have to think upstream of our purchases too, not just downstream of our disposals.

Rocco's mum just gifted us the most beautiful kinalabasa tomatoes. These are homegrown, vine-ripened, and pesticide-free. They're super sweet because unlike grocery tomatoes, these didn't ripen in a truck or a supermarket bin. The fruits had time to absorb all of the nutrients and sugars they could get from the plants before getting picked.
We're going to save the seeds and try to propagate more. We already have a couple of seedlings, but they need to be transplanted, and we're behind schedule. I hope we get them to fruit before temperatures rise again. Gah. Wish us luck!

We make soups to eat with the bread that we make. This here is a creamy potato and asparagus soup. Potatoes were on sale at the supermarket, so we've got potatoes coming out of our ears this week. Haha.
Liquid lunches are convenient for us to whip up because we can make a large batch of soup and just heat whatever amount we want whenever we want the stuff. You can also instantly make soup if you have a heating blender or a soy milk machine. We dump all of the vegetables we don't know what to do with in soups. Extra lettuce from salads? Add them into a soup. Got a shitton of homegrown arugula? Soup. Beets and kalabasa that have been in the freezer for weeks? Blitz em in a soup with some nutmeg and cayenne. Leftover corn? Soup. Leftover chickpeas, lentils, tofu? Soup. We garnish soups with sprouts, edible flowers, coconut cream, mushrooms, etc.
On busy days, we just scoop soups into some mugs and heat the stuff in the oven with slices of frozen homemade bread. Prep time is quick, we don't use a lot of energy/electricity, and we hardly have any dishes to wash in the aftermath of the meal. Everything is very low-EQ and low waste, especially since we don't peel/skin our produce. (We just soak them in a baking soda solution and scrub them.) We don't use oil, so this is WFPB too, yay. These soups also evolve into pasta sauces, curries, and stews. All you really need is some creativity and a good spice rack and the possibilities are endless.
Anyone else like drinking their food?

Swipe to see my favourite loaf in the entire world.😺
I realize I haven't posted anything here this year. We've been quiet because we've been busy with life. Still practicing Zero-Waste as best as we can. Still growing food, although I'll admit, we've been remiss with farming on the roof deck. We have crops we badly need to transplant, and we have some crops that got neglected and died. Eeek. The one thing we have been consistent with this new year is baking. As you already know, we stopped buying plastic-wrapped bread five years ago. We'd go to bakeries with our own bread bags and containers, and have them put the bread straight in. We also learned how to bake our own bread, and got into making our own sourdough and whatnot. Our "gana" to bake has fluctuated over the years, though. We don't have any household help so everything that we do, we do ourselves, and it can get tiring. Sometimes, baking is fun. Sometimes, it's troublesome. We aren't perfect. We've been baking bread non-stop this new year though, so yay. We bake several loaves at a time, once a week. That way, we only have to fire the oven up once and not waste electricity. When the boules come singing out of the oven and cool on the countertop, we slice them up and stuff all of the slices in the freezer. We then just quickly toast whatever we need throughout the week, usually pairing the bread with different plant-based soups, sauces, and dips. The weather's been great for warm, hearty soups too. *beams*
How have you guys been this new year?
