On Monday 20 April, CCI in partnership with @corkcitycouncil gathered in remembrance, reflection, and solidarity at the National Chornobyl Commemoration Ceremony.
The ceremony included contributions from Lord Mayor Cllr Fergal Dennehy, CEO of Cork City Council Valerie O’Sullivan, Ambassador of Ukraine to Ireland HE Larysa Gerasko and Chornobyl victim Krystina Nikityonik. Chornobyl adoptees to Ireland, Anna Gabriel and Raisa Carolan, also played a special role alongside the students of @ursulinescork and @officialcbccork.
During the ceremony, which was kindly MC’d by @jonathanhealy a sculpture created by sculptor @sandrabellsculpture was also unveiled. Donated to CCI from a prominent local businessman, the Chornobyl Mother sculpture stands as a powerful symbol of love, loss, resilience, and the enduring strength of those affected by the Chornobyl disaster. It honours the mothers who carried unimaginable burdens, the children whose lives were forever changed, and the communities who continue to live with the legacy of Chornobyl, aswell as the unparalleled humanitarian response from the people of Ireland.
At Chornobyl Children International, this moment renews our commitment to compassion, remembrance, and action ensuring that the human story of Chornobyl is never forgotten.
We thank all who attended, supported, and stood with us in remembrance.
🕯️💙

On the eve of the 40th anniversary of Chornobyl, we are honoured to share a message from Bono and Ali Hewson, paying tribute to the person who sparked the worldwide humanitarian response to Chornobyl, Adi Roche.
This video, which had an exclusive screening at 'Noel and Liz’s Chornobyl Lunch' last week, reflects the deep and enduring friendship that has underpinned the work of CCI for decades.
Ali and Bono have been long‑standing supporters and friends of CCI for over four decades, with Ali serving on our Board of Directors alongside countless other invaluable contributions.
Thank you Ali and Bono!

It is with the heaviest of hearts and profound sadness that we share news of the sudden death of our beloved CCI volunteer and friend, Pam Norris.
Words can scarcely express the loss we feel. Pam was a truly beautiful soul; energetic, bubbly, generous and endlessly kind-hearted. She brought warmth and love to everything she did, and embodied the very best of humanity, compassion and volunteerism.
For decades, Pam dedicated herself to bringing hope and relief to children whose lives had been forever changed by Chornobyl. Her commitment was extraordinary and her enormous heart and unwavering kindness made her so special.
In a remarkable testament to her determination and love for the children, Pam marked her 70th birthday by taking on her ‘Cycle for Baby Hearts’ challenge, a gruelling 2,500km cycle from West Cork to Derry. Through this incredible feat, she raised an astonishing €140,000 for CCI’s Cardiac Surgery Programme in Ukraine. She also played a pivotal role in fundraising with the Kinsale Outreach Group for a dedicated ‘Home of Hope’ in Belarus, giving vulnerable children a ‘forever’ home and family.
Because of Pam, hundreds of children have been given the precious gift of life, the chance to grow, to dream, and to look forward to a future. Her legacy will beat in their hearts for their entire lives.
Our hearts are broken for Pam’s daughter Melanie, family, wide circle of friends and all those who were blessed to know and love her. We will miss her infectious spirit, her beautiful smile and kindness that touched so many lives.
May Pam’s gentle soul Rest in Peace.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

💙 International Day of Care and Support 💙
Care is about recognising dignity, nurturing potential, and ensuring that every person has the opportunity to live a life filled with possibility.
At Chornobyl Children International, care and support are at the heart of everything we do through providing life-saving medical treatment and supporting children with complex needs, to helping young people with disabilities develop life skills, independence and a sense of belonging, we believe every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential.
Behind every breakthrough is a network of dedicated carers, medical professionals, families and communities who show, every day, what compassion in action looks like. 💙
On this International Day of Care and Support, we celebrate them all and reaffirm our commitment to standing alongside the children and families who need us most.

Today on World Food Day we are reminded that the contamination of the land remains the biggest health threat in the Chornobyl affected regions.
Almost 40 years on, Caesium-137 is the principal source of radiation in the zone around the Chornobyl nuclear power plant also known as ‘Death Valley’ or the ‘Exclusion Zone’.
Caesium 137 is one of the radioactive isotopes that was distributed by the reactor explosion and it causes the greatest risk to the health of the people in the Chornobyl affected regions. It finds its way via the food chain into the human body.
There is no safe dose of caesium 137 and according to Professor Yuri Bandashevsky “Any dose is an over dose of caesium 137- there should be no question about acceptable levels in the body.”
But even now in 2024, levels in milk cattle meat and non-wood forest products such as mushrooms continue to exceed the permissible content of caesium-137.
The Chornobyl disaster will leave measurable radioactive contamination in a 15,000 square mile area for 300 years.
This graph illustrates the chain reaction of radioactive particles in the environment. It demonstrates how food and land contamination can have far reaching affects it can have on the human population of contaminated areas.

Our 'Hospice and Community Care Programme' helps treat and deliver therapeutic services to terminally and profoundly ill children. The programme saves the lives of some of Belarus’ most helpless and forgotten children.
CCI’s multi-disciplinary teams conduct home based services specifically designed for each family. The programme helps a total of 60 families between Minsk and Gomel in Belarus.
It improves the quality of life of terminally-ill children, the programme allows the children to be cared for in their own homes, by their own families keeping these at risk children out of state run institutions. Each family is assigned a palliative care team comprised of a doctor, nurse, social worker and psychologist.
The team makes home visits to supervise the child’s care, provides medication and supplies at no cost to the families and evaluates the social and emotional needs of all family members.

Adi and members of our team, including colleagues from our Belarusian office and our Board of Directors, were delighted to meet with Ambassador Seadhna MacHugh and the team at the Irish Embassy in Vilnius to discuss CCI’s ongoing humanitarian work in Belarus and Ukraine.
While travel to Belarus remains impossible, our vital Medical, Human Rights and Hospice programmes continue, thanks to the dedication of our local teams and partners.
It was a valuable opportunity to update Ambassador MacHugh on our continued commitment to supporting those affected by the Chornobyl disaster, particularly in this 40th anniversary year. Four decades on, the need remains, and CCI continues to stand alongside the children, families and communities whose lives have been shaped by the disaster.
We are grateful to Ambassador MacHugh and the team at the Irish Embassy for taking the time to meet with us and hear about our ongoing work.

Today is World Mental Health Day as recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations. It is a day to educate and raise awareness of mental illness and its major effects on people’s lives worldwide. The theme for this year is 'Mental health in humanitarian emergencies'.
Mental health issues have become one of Chornobyl’s biggest legacies. Many of those who were relocated after the 1986 Chornobyl nuclear accident now suffer from anxiety, depression and disrupted social networks - the traumas of displaced people everywhere.
These conditions have health effects as real as those caused by radiation. The stress, depression and fear over the ongoing effects of the fallout have translated to negative conditions, especially for children’s health.
This day of observation, now more than ever, is crucial, as it encourages us to open up about mental health issues and tackle the stigma, isolation and discrimination that continues to plague people with mental health conditions and their families.

Huge congratulation to everyone behind 'Assume Nothing: The Radiation Holiday' which won a Silver award in the Documentary category at the IMRO Radio Awards 2026 and received a shortlist placement in the History category at the British Podcast Awards 2026 over the past few days.
A powerful podcast, ‘Assume Nothing: The Radiation Holiday’, shares the extraordinary story of CCI Ambassador Raisa Carolan, which we were delighted to have been part of.
From abandonment at birth as a result of her disabilities, being discovered at just 4 years old by Adi Roche and Ali Hewson, to finding a loving home in Ireland with the Carolan family through CCI’s Rest and Recuperation Programme, Raisa’s journey is one of incredible resilience, hope, and determination.
Now a successful professional in Dublin’s tech sector, Raisa is joined by Adi as she searches for answers about her painful early life of abandonment, neglect and incarceration.
The full 8-part series is available on Spotify, Apple Music, and all major podcast platforms.
A story of courage you won’t want to miss.

"With Sign Language, Everyone is Included!”
Today, we celebrate United Nations Day of Sign Languages!
This video, which was captured by our wonderful volunteers a few years ago, shows Nazar signing with his teacher, Yana.
Most children with impaired hearing in institutions live a very lonely and isolated life, however our hope for children like Nazar is that they can one day break free of life in institutions.
The UN General Assembly has proclaimed 23 September as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf or are hearing impaired.

Today, people around the world observe the International Day of Peace; a day dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace and calling for 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefire.
True peace means creating a world where children can grow up safe, where families can live with dignity, and where every child has the opportunity to learn, flourish and build a future.
For children in Ukraine, the reality of war continues alongside the long and painful legacy of the Chornobyl disaster.
At Chornobyl Children International, we remain committed to supporting children and families affected by both through restoring hope, alleviating suffering and helping protect future generations.
On this International Day of Peace, we stand with the children of Chornobyl and with all those working towards a safer, more peaceful world. 🕊️
