A meeting of rituals and cultures... Our Chulha oil diffuser rests beside a teapot at the Nakashima Workshop in New Hope. This pair of objects share an appreciation for craftsmanship and the hands that shape and use everyday objects. Our warmest Diwali wishes from Casegoods. The Chulha oil diffuser is available for purchase from our studio and stockists. 04 Nov 2026 Casegoods is pleased to announce a licensing collaboration with George Nakashima Woodworkers. With the support and leadership of Mira Nakashima, Casegoods joins a small group of workshops entrusted with carrying forward their incredible legacy. The collaboration features a Grass-Seated Lounge Chair, originally designed by George Nakashima during his time in India, and an accompanying stool, newly designed and exclusive to Casegoods. Each piece has been crafted in India and is available in teakwood and rosewood. The collaboration celebrates the Nakashima family’s enduring relationship with India, which began with George Nakashima in the 1930s and continues today through Mira. It reflects the values shared by Casegoods and George Nakashima Woodworkers: material honesty, respect for traditional woodworking practices, and an enduring commitment to fine craftsmanship. It goes back 90 years, when its founder, the legendary Japanese American architect and furniture designer, first came to the country in 1936 to work on the Golconde building for the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry. Eager to engage further with India, he later worked with Gira and Gautam Sarabhai at NID, Ahmedabad, in the mid-1960s, training people in the making of his designs. Around that time, his daughter, Mira Nakashima, took a break from graduate school in Tokyo to accompany him and had her first taste of India. Over five decades later, Mira, now leading the workshop and practice her father created, has collaborated with Mumbai-based furniture brand Casegoods, an offshoot of #AD100 firm Case Design, to turn this long relationship with India into a new chapter. Two chairs are currently being produced and launched. The first is the iconic grass-seated chair designed by George in the 1940s, accompanied by a small companion stool. The second is a grass-seated lounge chair that he designed during his time in Ahmedabad. Inspired by the posture of sitting cross-legged close to the floor, the lounge chair is a contextual take on some of his earlier pieces, adapted to the materials and ergonomics of India. Mira and her husband, Jonathan Yarnall, worked closely with Casegoods to refine its proportions and details, as well as a newly designed accompanying ottoman exclusively for the Indian market.
