“Blue and white are part of my DNA,” says Aerin Lauder, explaining that her grandmother Estée Lauder used to scope out people’s powder rooms to see what color schemes they preferred. “That’s why she went with her blue-and-white packaging,” says @aerin. For her new collection of fanciful ceramic sinks and toilets for @kohler, Lauder mined her own heritage and took inspiration also from the Delft (and other blue/white) treasures passed down from her grandmother. The Artist Editions Fleurette Collection also includes a green-and-white version, which was the second place color combo from Estée’s powder room reconnaissance. (Lauder plans to install the green in her Palm Beach home, and the blue in her Hamptons house, which was once Estée’s.) “Some of my earliest memories were of Estée’s colored sinks - especially her turquoise bathtub in Palm Beach,” says Lauder. “I try to be bold with my interiors, but I couldn’t have imagined this.” Even designer Vikram Goyal was taken aback by the glamour of the Art Deco villa that lured him back to his childhood neighborhood in New Delhi. With its matcha-colored terrazzo staircase, soaring 12-foot ceilings, and striking proportions, Goyal quickly realized that the three-story stucco house had a tale of its own to tell.
When it came to the furnishings, Goyal - a self-described “craft revivalist” and creative director of @vikramgoyalstudio and @viyadesignofficial—cut loose, layering Gujarati mirrorwork, gold-and-bronze wall panels created in collaboration with @degournay, and a lifetime’s worth of art, heirlooms, and globe-spanning finds. Among them are a curious set of chairs from his grandfather, newly dressed in yellow silk brocade woven in Benares.
“I’m doing a lot of Indian storytelling these days,” Goyal muses. There’s an argument to be made that he always has.

At @colinking’s new Manhattan apartment, casement windows and a generous terrace look out across neighboring rooftops, the city unfolding in a postcard-perfect sweep. It is, in every sense, the most elevated space he has ever called home-filled with choice antiques, vintage treasures, and a growing collection of fine art. “Every time people visit they’ll say, Wow, so different for you,” he says. “But this side of me was always there.” The creative polyglot and artistic director at large of @beni_rugs had until recently lived in a light-filled Tribeca loft, its limewashed walls a neutral backdrop to a spare mix of furnishings. But if that apartment was a calling card, it had also become a pigeonhole. “I got placed in a beige box,” he notes.
Now, where his old apartment was all about
“stripping it back,” his current digs lean into layers from the ground up, with a dynamic mix of furnishings spanning myriad eras and styles.

Zach Bryan’s latest record, “With Heaven On Top,” starts with a poem: “Bought a house from a man in New York,” he says in his no-nonsense drawl. The house in question is the Oklahoma-raised singer-songwriter’s Manhattan town house, where its cozy, wood-burning fireplaces and the history that sits between the floorboards have become a source of inspiration.
“The creaky wood and the old architecture made me feel attached to it,” says the musician.
Working with @alaneckstein of @thesomersethouse, Bryan and his wife @samanthabryan wanted a home that felt unpretentious, relatable, and comfortable.
Drawing parallels between Bryan’s musical style and design, Eckstein clad walls in stained white oak and selected furniture in a palette of leather, iron, copper, and timber. Meanwhile, family photographs, an oil portrait of a sailor that nods to Bryan’s time in the Navy, and a guitar gifted by Bruce Springsteen bring pieces of their personal lives into the space.

When designer Zac Posen and ballet dancer turned actor @__harrisonball__ relocated to San Francisco for Posen’s new role as Executive Vice President and Creative Director of Gap Inc., they were, says @zacposen, ready to discover something new. When they found this 1850s captain’s cottage on a telegraph Hill, they knew it was meant for them.
AD100 designer Ken Fulk (pictured with the couple in the last image) helped the pair to revive the charming but somewhat ramshackle house, embracing history and eccentricity and flea market treasures. “The cottage is delightfully imperfect,” says @kenfulk. “There is this great bohemian quality to the place.”
Summing up the personal spirit of the house in Posen’s own words: “And most meaningful to me, my father’s paintings, which came with me across the country. The garden is all Harrison. He planted every bit of it himself.” Ball, a former principal dancer at @nycballet, has the last word: “The cottage is not, like, particularly fancy. I don’t really love overdone stuff. It is what it is.” Full story in November AD and linked in bio. Photos @douglasfriedman text @therealplumsykes

“Nature is the master, and humans should make as little interference as possible.” That observation guided #AD100 Hall of Fame legend Axel Vervoordt (@axelvervoordt_co)in the transformation of a nearly 10,000-square-foot chalet in the Swiss Alps, where his goal was to make the 1980s structure feel as though it had always belonged there.
Working alongside @comina_architecture, Vervoordt eschewed newer materials in favor of rarer, recuperated elements with historic resonance: 18th-century Swiss wooden ceilings, 19th-century pine paneling, 16th-century granite blocks, and weathered stone rich with natural patina. In the living room, a monumental fireplace built using the unpolished backsides of 18th-century carved stones centers the room. An extraordinary collection of art further elevates the home’s atmosphere, with paintings by Kazuo Shiraga, Lucio Fontana, Lee Ufan, Chung Chang-Sup, Ida Barbarigo, and Jef Verheyen operating in dialogue with the timber and stone.

I’m so thrilled to share actor Julianne Moore’s singular Manhattan apartment on our November cover. Like many empty nesters, Moore and her husband, film director Bart Freundlich, decided to downsize (from a beautiful townhouse AD documented in 2017) and landed in this remarkable, lushly terraced space high in the city sky. Working again with her brother-in-law, AD100 architectural designer @oliverfreundlichdesign, Moore set about making her very specific, considered mark on the prewar space without losing any of what she calls the “funky” magic of the building, formerly a residential hotel. “I wanted a sense of history, of time, of all the people who have lived here before us,” says @juliannemoore. “We’re just passing through. That’s the magic of New York City.” Full story linked in bio. Photos @cgbp text @michaelboodro styling @michaelreynoldsnyc fashion styling @kateyoung

Sublime! When the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity arose to acquire a historic “bettei” (traditional secondary residence) in one of east Kyoto’s most prestigious temple areas, Yusaku Maezawa (@yusaku2020) didn’t hesitate. Over seven years, the fashion-tech entrepreneur and art collector gently coaxed the 19th-century retreat into the present.
Overseeing every detail, Maezawa enlisted architect Hiroshi Nakamura of NAP Architectural
Design Office (@hiroshi_nakamura_naparchitects); Ueyakato
Landscape, the 178-year-old firm led by Tomoki Kato; and traditional carpentry firm Nakamura Sotoji Komuten, which had contributed to the original build decades earlier. Together, they preserved the property’s timeworn mud walls and masterful sukiya architecture while introducing silk carpeting, midcentury furnishings, and contemporary art throughout its 4,000-square-foot villa, separate teahouse, and exquisitely planned garden.

Lucy Hale (@lucyhale) found herself, and embraced her good-witchy style, in her Los Angeles sanctuary. After years of healing, heartbreak, and hard-won self-discovery, the “Pretty Little Liars” actor worked with Marie Trohman (@marie.trohman) and Ashley Drost (@ash_taggg) of @proem_studio to transform her 1940s Spanish-style house into a personal reflection of the woman she is today.
For AD’s digital cover, Hale opens the doors to the romantic and edgy home that has evolved alongside her. Take the tour at the link in bio. Photography @grantlegan; Interior Styling @wasselpa; Wardrobe Styling @jennaafilingeri; Words @michandrews
