What if AI could help us detect breast cancer earlier?
In our “Today’s Research. Tomorrow’s Cures.” series, we’re exploring how research is advancing breast cancer care—and where it could take us next.
BCRF-funded researchers, including Dr. Connie Lehman, are investigating how artificial intelligence can help identify patterns in routine mammograms. In one study, AI-generated risk scores revealed differences in women who later developed breast cancer as early as six years before diagnosis.
With continued research, AI could help advance new approaches to risk assessment, early detection, and treatment.

"Research gave me hope, and it gave me options. It's one of the reasons I'm able to stand at that starting line."—Danielle Gabriel
Danielle, a breast cancer thriver, is running the 2026 @nycmarathon with #TeamBCRF in honor of her own breast cancer journey. "Every treatment and surgery I received existed because researchers dedicated their lives to asking better questions and finding better answers," she said. "Every mile I run is for the women who came before me, the women currently in treatment, and the women who don't yet know they'll one day need this research."
Help us thank Danielle in the comments. If you want to support her fundraising and read her full story, tap the link in bio.

"Breast cancer took my breasts. It took my ovaries. It took my hair. It did not take my joy." ✨ @sarrahstrimelbentley
Sarrah Bentley was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 38 years old. It took a lot from her, but as she puts it, there's still joy to be found. Some of her joy started with the one embryo she was able to save before starting chemo. Today, he is a toddler named Chance. ♥️

For Richard Loud, fundraising for BCRF is personal. After discovering a lump under his nipple, he received a breast cancer diagnosis, spurring him to participate in a clinical trial for men with breast cancer—funded by BCRF.
“By participating in the clinical trial, not only was I able to benefit from the research, but I became the research,"" he says.
During treatment, Richard continued doing what he loved, including running marathons. Today, he’s fundraising to help advance the research that made his treatment possible and to help create better options for people diagnosed with breast cancer in the future.
