Celebrating 30 years of the Wickaninnish Inn.
This remote destination on the west coast of Vancouver Island opened back in 1996 – joining our Association a year later.
Over these three decades, it has come to exactly embody the sense of community, the skill of artisanship and the connections to nature that characterize our collection.
Far more than a lovely hotel in a stunning setting (and it is certainly that), it stands proudly at the heart of Tofino’s culture.
By preserving regional wood-carving skills, championing local artists and effortlessly co-existing with the ocean, the wildlife and the ecosystem, it’s quite the model for modern-day hospitality.

Tofino is all but synonymous with surfing. The cold-water waves, kilometres-long sandy beach breaks, array of locally-owned surf shops, and close-knit surf community have long been part of our small town's identity.
In 2009, the O'Neill Coldwater Classic brought Tofino onto the international surfing stage for the first time, welcoming some of the world's top surfers to compete along these shores. But it was local surfer Peter Devries who made history, winning the competition on his home break at Chesterman Beach.
This was a pivotal moment in Tofino's surf history, and one that helped cement the town's place as Canada's surf capital.

Another defining part of Tofino’s surf culture is Queen of the Peak, an annual championship created to celebrate and showcase women’s surfing.
Started in 2010 by @surfsister and @shelterrestaurant, the event was born in the wake of the massively supported men's O’Neill Cold Water Classic coming to Tofino the year before. With one of the highest proportions of women surfers in the world, Tofino seemed like the perfect place to create a competition of its own - especially after the town had proved it would absolutely show up to support local surf talent.
Since then, the event has seen hundreds of top female surfers travel from all over the world to compete in Tofino's waters. Among the competition, we are also always lucky to see incredibly talented local surfers such as @mathea_olin and @sanoa_olin take to the waves.
While the championship is taking a purposeful pause following the 2025 competition, we look forward to seeing @queenofthepeak return in the future and celebrating more incredible women's surfing. The Wickaninnish Inn has been a longtime supporter and sponsor of the event, and we’re proud to see it continue to be part of Tofino’s surf story.
