Well, our love story is in The New York Times today. ❤️ Three years ago, I saw a picture of @mish.bruton shirtless on a horse on Hinge and immediately announced to my friends that I was going to fu— erm i mean kiss this person. On our first date, I apparently terrified them with my inability to make small talk. By minute 27, something clicked. Two hours later, I didn’t want them to leave. A few days after that, they baked me an apple pie, and I told them they could kiss me. And now we’re married. Getting to tell our story in the paper where my dad spent so much of his life feels especially meaningful. I wish he could have been at our wedding, but I know he would have loved Mish. And he definitely would have had something to say about that headline. Thank you to Sadiba Hasan for telling our story with such care, to @sorrellscrutton for the beautiful photographs, and to our wonderful, weird, loving community for celebrating with us. This week, Mish and I got married. I don’t know that I’ve ever experienced so much joy in such a concentrated period of time. We gathered a small group of our favorite people in Santa Barbara (bigger celebration in 🇮🇪 tbc), and spent a few days celebrating the rather extraordinary fact that we found each other. I feel so lucky to be queer. I love the freedom of getting to imagine a life that doesn’t have to follow anyone else’s blueprint. I love that Mish and I are two very different people who have found a way to make each other better without sanding down the parts that make us who we are. They challenge me, surprise me, make me laugh, and remind me that being loved and being understood are two different things, and how wonderful it is when you get both. I’ve spent a lot of my life thinking about the ways people love each other, the ways they fail each other, and the enormous amount of courage it takes to really know another person. Marriage was always something that scared me a little but but after speaking to Mish, I realized I loved the idea of making a promise to keep trying, to keep learning, and to keep showing up for each other. And this week, looking around at the people who have loved us through so many different versions of ourselves, I felt something I don’t always allow myself to feel: completely, uncomplicatedly happy.
