A LOT has happened in my life this year. I met the girl of my dreams and we’re getting married in December. I stepped away from full time pastoral ministry in September. I became a dad overnight. I started multiple new musical endeavours with friends (@withthesunmusic @hockeysznn ). Through it all, I’m learning how to love and lead more and more every day. It’s hard, fun, beautiful, frustrating, joyful, exhausting, and exciting. I wouldn’t change any part of it. This ride has been wild and I’m grateful to know a King that is never caught off guard, even when I am. Tanner Bishop stepped into Red Tree Recording Studio to track “Through the Hurt.” It’s one of the songs that will live on his upcoming album, and this session was another piece of that larger story. Been going back to this song lately as I go through therapy. I wrote it in a difficult mental state as an allegory to what the mind and body goes through in the dark. Pretty vulnerable thing to admit as a grown man but I’ve felt for a long time that it might be worth a shot to see how someone else much wiser and better equipped to handle mental health might be able to help a stubborn, calloused man like me. To be completely honest, it sucks a lot of the time. Having to dig deep and talk about things I’d sworn I’d take to the grave is messy and painful. After today, I’m beginning to see how there’s a way out of the pit. Im here to tell anyone that’ll listen, it truly takes being honest with yourself and with someone else that has the tools to help you find the road back to reality. We’ve all got stuff to deal with and if we don’t, it’ll reveal itself over and over again in your life whether you realize it or not. Get help if you need it and in the meantime, let this honest song be a reminder that you’re human and you’re not alone. *FOR THOSE THAT DON’T LIKE TO READ: God is good, life is twisted. This song was a great reminder today and this team I’m surrounded by is just INSANELY talented. I am blessed to do this every week with these peeps. I know I don’t really post much… or lately at all but life has been pretty tough this year for a lot of reasons. I’ll spare all the details but if you know me and want to talk life, send me a text or a message on here and I’d be happy to share what’s going on in my world. Lately I have had to really lean in and just trust that God is working things out and I don’t have to know it all and fully understand why life plays out like it does. We are funny creatures in that we like to be fully in control of everything. When it comes to things we ultimately never had control of in the first place, we crash out and question everything we’ve ever known. When we start seeing curveballs as if we’ve never seen a breaking ball in our life, it feels like we all of a sudden have to swing for the fences with our eyes closed. Life can be terrifying and beautiful all at the same time and I am convinced that the only way through the storm is to dig deep and find the gratitude to keep it moving. In the midst of the pain, chaos and uncertainty, I have plenty to be thankful for. My kids are a daily reminder of that. How quickly we forget that we’ve made it this far against all odds and if we’re still breathing, we got a whole lot more to offer in this life. Right now I’m incredible grateful for family, a few good friends and therapy. If you’re hurting or struggling in any way, just know that I am too. You’re not alone… myself and a lot of others often feel like it’s hard to just stay afloat. If you need help, reach out! Theres always a seat at @yourchurchstory and my line is always open.
