I first met Carmine Grimshaw at the I Love Manchester Awards last year, where I was a finalist for the Alan Turing Award, and we clicked almost immediately. Since then, we’ve become great friends. Carmine has been incredibly supportive of my art and what I’m trying to achieve, even officially opening my gallery in Spinningfields, Manchester, in his role as Lord Mayor. This beautiful poem ‘The Same but Different’ is his personal reflection on our friendship and the different ways we experience and see the world. His words reflect something I’ve spoke about for years. We all experience life differently, and none of us should need fixing just because we see the world through a different lens. It’s encouraging to see more people beginning to listen and change their perspectives. For too long, the responsibility to adapt has been placed on the individual. Real inclusion requires society to change too, rather than continually expecting those who experience the world differently to fit in. Something else I really admire about Carmine is that, as part of his legacy as Lord Mayor, he personally funded and published his own poetry book, Lord Mayor’s Rattlebag of Poems: Without Rhyme & Reason. Manchester’s very own Stan Chow created the fantastic artwork for the book, with all proceeds going to We Love MCR Charity, supporting people and communities across Manchester. You might know Stan for his unmistakable portraits, which have appeared everywhere from The New Yorker to collaborations with some of the world's biggest brands. But there's another side to Stan. One that's been soundtracking Manchester's dancefloors for decades. From jazz, soul and funk to psychedelic discoveries, hip-hop and everything in between, Stan's musical curiosity knows few boundaries. He still remembers a night at Night & Day in 1998 when the crowd ended up dancing on the bar and tables. The experience was so overwhelming he admits he had a little cry afterwards! Now he's bringing that same passion for music and connection to LOOM, alongside fellow curator Andy Votel.
