Always in the board bag. 🛫 @sheldonsimkus On a recent strike mission to Indonesia, @sheldonsimkus scored his fair share of heavy barrels, but when the swell offered up some punchier, playful waves with plenty of face to work with, he reached for his Mindcraft in I-Bolic 2.0 Technology by @tomo_surfboards and @kellyslater. From deep on rail to above the lip, Sheldon put the shape through its paces in exactly what it was designed for. The Mindcraft is the result of Kelly and Tomo’s quest to create the ultimate minimalist high-performance shortboard. Shaper Spotlight: Dan Mann. 🛠️ From starting out shaping his own boards in San Diego in the mid-’90s to designing some of the most recognizable shapes in the Firewire and Slater Designs lineup, @dan__mann has spent nearly three decades refining his craft. We recently caught up with Dan and picked his brain about his shaping philosophy. Swipe through to get to know Dan and the craftsmanship behind his designs. #FunByDesign How would you describe your approach to shaping, and what sets it apart? @dan__mann: “I really don’t think I’m very different from other shapers. We’re all a little crazy. My approach may be a little more free to explore unique shapes because of my situation with Firewire/Slater Designs, and with Kelly and Rob. The other benefit of my situation is that I can explore unique processes and materials that give the shapes and designs completely different feelings.” The mind behind many of @kellyslater’s @slaterdesigns shapes, including the DRK, FRK+, FRK Swallow, and more, Dan has played a pivotal role in pushing surfboard design and performance forward. You’re known for surfing both regular and goofy-footed. Has that always come naturally to you? @dan__mann: “Yeah, that’s the way I surf. It’s how I’ve surfed since I was a little kid. I don’t know any different, so it’s just normal. There are benefits for sure, but there are also some things I’m missing, like being able to stall and slot into barrels on the backhand. I think I’m naturally a regular-footer, though.” What did winning the Shape-Off at the Boardroom Show (and representing Eric Arakawa) mean to you? @dan__mann: “Winning the Shape-Off at the Boardroom Show and being able to represent Eric Arakawa means a ton to me personally, and it’s really humbling on the professional side. Eric is a precision-oriented craftsman and a gentleman. The other shapers in the Shape-Off are all incredible, and if I had not won, I would’ve been in great company.” For Dan, shaping is about the freedom to explore new shapes, materials, and processes.
