Sometimes, making a difference starts with recognizing a need and thinking creatively about how you can help. 💜
Steinhardt Technology Services’ Ray Pfaff and Cliff Rene and Associate Professor of Applied Psychology and NYU Prison Education Program (PEP) @nyuprisoneducation Director Shabnam Javdani saw a technology need for students in the PEP program, so they put their heads and expertise together. Now, when used laptops are decommissioned after being used by Steinhardt faculty, staff, and researchers, they are securely wiped, refurbished, and redistributed to students through a partnership with the NYU Office of Sustainability @nyu_green .
It’s a quintessentially Steinhardt story: Colleagues with totally different areas of expertise coming together to not only give technology a second life, but to give students a better educational experience.
What does making a difference in your community look like to you?

For NYU Steinhardt junior Ketan Gardner, running the TCS New York City Marathon on November 1 is about more than crossing the finish line.
He’s running in memory of his best friend, Axel (pictured in Slide 2) whose decision to become an organ donor saved 12 lives after his passing in 2025.
Through this 26.2-mile journey, Gardner hopes to honor Axel’s legacy and raise awareness about the life-changing impact of organ donation. 💜
Read more about Gardner’s story and the meaning behind his run in our Linktree.
Alt. Text Slide 1: Ketan Gardner, an NYU Steinhardt student, smiles and gives a thumbs-up while running. Beside him is a quote by Gardner, “There are going to be obstacles in your path. But the person that you become by persevering through those difficulties is incredible,” along with the NYU Steinhardt logo.
Alt. Text Slide 2: Ketan Gardner (right) sits beside his friend, Axel (left) in an airport waiting area. Both smile at the camera, and Gardner makes a hand gesture.

The NYU Steinhardt Drama Therapy Program celebrated the launch of The Jameel Arts & Health Lab – Lancet Global Collection on the Arts & Health at NYU Skirball during UNGA Healing Arts Week, held alongside the UN General Assembly.
Led by Dr. Nisha Sajnani, Professor and Director of the Program in Drama Therapy and Founding Co-Director of Jameel Arts & Health Lab, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, the Collection brings together decades of global evidence demonstrating how the arts and creative arts therapies can support health and wellbeing — from prevention and wellness to treatment, care, and recovery.
Link to Collection in bio.
The event brought together artists, creative arts therapists, researchers, health leaders, policymakers, and practitioners, including a powerful performance and conversation with @jonbatiste and music therapist Dr. Joanne Loewy exploring Jon’s vision of “Social Music” - the capacity of music to connect, heal, and bring people together.
We were especially proud to see NYU Drama Therapy students, together with students across public health, nursing, and dance education, actively engage in the conversation and have the opportunity to share questions and ideas with esteemed panelists from around the world.
The symposium offered an important space for students to connect their learning and practice with a broader conversation and growing global movement to integrate the arts and health.

What do siblings, a move to New York, and a career at Steinhardt have in common?
For Dean Kristie Patten, they’re all part of her story.
Today we’re kicking off Stories from Steinhardt, a new series about getting to know our community beyond their titles, degrees, and resumes—and creating a space to share the stories that make us who we are. 💜
First up: Dean Patten shares a personal story about moving to New York City.
Behind every person is a story. And sometimes, the best parts are those you won’t find on paper.
What’s something about you that your resume doesn’t capture?

A milestone in the global movement to integrate the arts in clinical care and public health 🙌🙌
Last week, we launched The Jameel Arts & Health Lab - Lancet Global Collection on the Arts & Health — bringing together decades of evidence and a roadmap for advancing research, practice, and policy.
Developed by the Jameel Arts & Health Lab in collaboration with the World Health Organization, the Collection examines evidence from around the world showing how participation in the arts and creative arts therapies can contribute across the continuum of health: from promoting wellbeing and preventing ill health to supporting treatment, care, and recovery.
But evidence alone is not enough.
The Collection asks what it will take to move from evidence to action: embedding the arts more systematically within health systems, communities, education, and public policy; strengthening the workforce and infrastructure needed to deliver this work; and ensuring that access to the health benefits of the arts is equitable.
We launched the Collection at NYU Skirball during UNGA Healing Arts Week with artists, researchers, health leaders, policymakers, and practitioners, including a remarkable performance and conversation with @jonbatiste exploring his vision of “Social Music” and the capacity of music to connect, heal, and bring people together.
Thank you to our speakers for their thoughtful remarks and insights including Georgina Dopico (NYU Provost), Sarah Calderon (Senior Advisor for Cultural Life, Dept. Economic Justice NYC), Dr AZA Allsop (Yale), Dr Joanne Loewy (Mt. Sinai), Dr Nisha Sajnani (NYU Steinhardt), Stephen Stapleton (Culturunners) Alana Jackson (spoken word artist), Miriam Sabin (The Lancet), Uzma Sulaiman (Community Jameel), Dr Daisy Fancourt (UCL/UNESCO), Dr Jill Sonke (Stanford), Dr Agustin Ibáñez, (UAI, GBHI), Dr Nikos Stefanis (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) and Dr Nils Fietje (WHO Regional Office for Europe).
This event was part of UNGA Healing Arts Week 2026, which took place September 19-16, alongside the UN General Assembly.
