🚪🥁☕ Making new friends, one storytime at a time. 🚪🥁☕ Second Sunday Storytime is back at Library Shop Mission Hills this Sunday, November 8 at 11:00 a.m. with “The Lists” by @kyomaclear and @juliasardaportabella, a story about how friends can walk through an open door, join a drum line, or show up at a cafe. Attendees get a special pin with art from the book! Songs, play, and more making-friends picture books for kids of all ages. Last night’s #bookparty at the @sdpubliclibrary drew nearly a hundred attendees. Many thanks to @jennifercoburnbooks for leading a sparkling conversation, @libraryshopsd for managing #booksales , @marcachery for making it possible for us to have the event in the spectacular Shiley Special Events Suite, the library intern who created that incredible reel to publicize the reading, everyone who came out on a school night— including @blancojody ‘s students — and the fabulous friends who dressed in the speakeasy style😍 What a wonderful way to celebrate #filipinoamericanhistorymonth . Nowadays, tourists love visiting the #GaslampQuarter, but its origins as the red-light Stingaree district in the 1880s used to keep many visitors away! While many of the original structures were razed in efforts to “clean up” up the area before the 1915 California-Panama Exposition, it’s reputation remained. In its place came dance halls, speakeasies, tattoo parlors and gambling halls. This is the setting for @marvisoliven ‘s new book—a historical fiction based on real events—Taxi Dancer. Many immigrants, including Filipinos, were forced to live in the Stingaree due to segregation and oppressive laws preventing them from living in other neighborhoods. Taxi Dancer features features star-crossed lovers, a murder mystery and local San Diego history. @libraryshopsd and SDPL invite folks to San Diego Central Library and to see the author in conversation with @jennifercoburnbooks . @zzymzzy_quartet will play big band swing and attendees are encouraged to come in period dress and dance!
