Last week, Jaclyn Cosgrove, The Times' staff writer covering the (great!) outdoors hiked on a foggy, misty day along a 4.4-mile stretch of Highway 39 that's been closed for almost 50 years, after massive landslides left the road impassable (and too expensive and dangerous to fix). It’s since been a popular hiking and biking route, offering a quiet escape and easy connection to the larger Angeles National Forest. But how long can this road survive the elements, especially with El Niño increasing the odds of substantial storms this winter? In this week’s edition of The Wild, our weekly outdoors newsletter, @jacinthewild will try to answer that question, which per a recent Reddit discussion, is weighing on local hikers. "I can say that, after reporting this out, I actually feel some hope about Highway 39's future," wrote Cosgrove. The emerald green bridge is a major thoroughfare connecting the city of San Pedro to Terminal Island, home to both the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach. The closure, which begins today, has been years in the making and included impact-mitigation meetings between Caltrans officials, neighboring communities, shipping companies, labor unions and the contractor. The many holiday markets, craft fairs and open studios in Los Angeles are a wonderful way to connect with your community. The California Coastal Commission on Thursday approved an extensive permit that railway officials hope will help maintain the critical rail line, which has faced an onslaught of rising seas, harsh waves and strong storms over the last several years that have led to repeated closures — an issue only intensified this year by the historic El Niño. A key element of the permit is the placement of almost 700,000 cubic yards of sand on sections of the area’s shrinking — or completely gone — beaches, an investment Orange County officials say will be the single largest sand replenishment along this stretch of coast in more than 60 years. With $300 million in state and federal funding already secured to help protect the 4 miles of coast where the railroad has been most threatened, Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley, who sits on the Orange County Transportation Authority’s board of directors, said the major sand replenishment — which will use about a third of those funds — could occur as soon as January. Incumbent Karen Bass conceded to the City Council member on Thursday after the latest tally of votes showed Raman with a lead of four percentage points. The Associated Press called the race soon after. After election day, the county released detailed but preliminary vote counts by electoral precinct. Those counts include more than 730,000 votes in the mayoral race tallied as of 3 a.m. on election night. At that time, about 67% of the expected vote had been counted. The map reflects this early snapshot. It shades each precinct by the leading candidate. Deeper green or orange indicate a wider lead. Precincts with more votes cast per square mile appear more solid, while areas with lower voter density fade to white. Hatched areas had 10 or fewer votes. Miller, the current deputy chief of staff, has helped design Trump’s immigration policies and spearhead his mass deportation campaign. Miller's appointment as chief of staff, a powerful position for driving the president’s policy agenda, managing his staff and twisting the arms of allies and opponents alike to bend to the executive’s will, ends speculation that Trump might ease back from his less popular policies or moderate following devastating losses for his party in the midterms. The losses were driven in part to losing Latino voters and many congressional seats along the southern border. Miller is widely seen as among Trump’s more extreme advisors. But Trump on Friday called Miller one of his “most trusted advisors,” and said he would take over as chief of staff Monday. This is a developing story. Zoe Lofgren (D-San José) and Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael), the party's top lawmakers on two of Congress' most consequential energy and environment committees, are likely to be elevated to chair. The committees oversee major areas of federal science and energy research, public lands, water, wildlife and natural resources policy. While neither directly controls federal agencies, their leaders hold significant authority over oversight and legislation. Although committees cannot prevent the president from issuing executive orders, they can hold hearings, subpoena documents, investigate whether agencies are complying with existing laws, and draft legislation to protect specific programs or funding. Markle Sr., 82, was arrested in Florida and is charged in the Central District of California with possession of child pornography. According to a criminal complaint against him, federal authorities found explicit photos of Markle Sr. and minors in the storage units. City Hall at latimes.com 05 Nov 2026 By 2050, half of the world’s population could be myopic, with nearly 10% potentially dealing with severe eye disease and vision loss. Diagnoses that once happened in grade school are now seen in preschoolers. The earlier myopia starts the faster it progresses, raising the risk of serious eye disease and potential blindness later in life. Regular outdoor time, screen breaks and treatments such as low-dose atropine may help slow progression, though researchers say screens are only part of a complex picture. And that will be remarkable, and fun to watch, for a number of reasons,” writes columnist Steve Lopez. "Raman is either a political savant or someone with really good timing," he writes, "or maybe a little of both." "Raman will have two key allies in City Controller Kenneth Mejia, who monitors and critiques City Hall’s many inefficiencies, and in Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, who is a potential candidate for the new position of county executive," writes Lopez. “You’re right. It is daunting,” Horvath said of the countless challenges facing L.A. “But I don’t think it was a secret to Nithya when she got into the race.” Read Lopez's full column — including Horvath's comments on L.A.'s incoming mayor — at the link in our bio. 📸 @myung_chun 05 Nov 2026
