The @lalgbtcenter is so special to me. What a gift it was to be honored alongside my sibling in sacrilege, @cainculto, and by the eloquent @angiejaime, at this year’s Queerceañera! I never had a proper quince party so this felt very healing. 🏳️‍🌈 I want to explain why the Center is so dear to me. Five years ago, someone who wanted to harm me posted my address and phone number to encourage others to harass me. My landlord wouldn’t let me break my lease. A counselor at the Center used the California Civil Code § 1946.7 to help me leave to safety. Bisexual women are very maligned and misunderstood. We experience the highest rates of domestic violence, sexual abuse and stalking compared to those of any other sexual orientation. (I should add that trans people report 4x more violence than cisgender people.) My reality as a survivor — a club that far too many of us belong to — is why I support the Center, which has supported me. I get tons of asks for my time and attention every day — now I ask you to donate to the Center, so that it can continue saving lives in Los Angeles. Hey, it’s my birthday! And in anticipation of the summer’s end, I wrote about my last real summer of girlhood — a.k.a. the summer my friends and I escaped from Girl Scout camp to party at the Jewish camp across the lake. 🛶 I feel so lucky to have had a space like camp to develop my own autonomy as a girl, which in turn, led me to value my autonomy as a woman.
