Who's game for a BIG adventure in western Wyoming this summer? Bikepackers, backpackers, horsepackers - you're all invited. Chime in if you're interested, fill out the "I'm interested!" form at the link in my bio, and please help spread the word. We'll gather in Kemmerer and then strike north through the Wyoming Range all the way to the Tetons, hopefully with some group camping along the way, a resupply drop at McDougal Gap, and shuttle support to make logistics as simple as possible. And no, this isn't a race of any sort, and it'll be free. I've spent a lot of time on these trails over the past 5 years. There's momentum on a major trails project out here, and to help that momentum grow, I want more folks to see some of the trails nestled in these mountains. These trails are very demanding - I can't stress that enough. They fade in and out in places, completely vanish at times, rarely utilize switchbacks, and if you're a mountain biker, you'll be pushing your bike frequently. But for lovers of backcountry trails through beautiful places that rarely see tires, boots or hooves, this area is magical. These photos offer a glimpse of that. The route links together 2-track out of Kemmerer, the rugged and faint Wyoming Range Trail to Hoback Junction, and then more well-traveled trail through the Snake River Range. Hikers can continue north on the famous Teton Crest Trail, mountain bikers will wrap up in Victor, ID, and horse riders likely will hit the end of their ride a little farther south to avoid a short section on highway. Let me know if you're interested. I'll get a list going and keep folks in the loop. Timing will likely be late September, and I'll set some firmer dates after surveying what would work best for potential participants, but envision ~6 days on bike and maybe twice that on foot. 29 Jan 2026 Proof of concept, the first thru-ride of the new Orogenesis trail! This was my longest ride ever at 135 days out, and it's sure a relief to have pulled that off, but it does feel strange to wake up and not have anywhere to pedal. All the miles shared with folks along the way and the widespread enthusiasm for the new route were absolute highlights. The riding? That speaks for itself in these clips! A few summary stats for the numbers geeks out there: * 4725 miles * 498,000 feet of descending  * 583 hours pedaling (and pushing) * 376,000 calories of work * Half the miles solo, half shared * 0 flats * 0 crashes * 30+ breakfast burritos * 50+ tacos * 400+ cookies * 1 mechanical (from dropping my bike down a rocky gully) * 3 sets of tires * 6 chains * 5 sets of brake pads * 2 bikes (switched from Pivot Trailcat SL to dropbar LES SL for Baja) * 3 T-shirts, 4 pairs of socks (eventually the stink just won't come out...) #bikepacking #adventurecycling #mtb #backcountrymtb 25 Dec 2025 The next adventure - recovery and rehab. It's been a long and oft frustrating spring/summer/fall of nursing a torn meniscus. But now it's stitched back together and hopefully beginning the healing process so I can get back to riding and running and hiking pain-free next year. It was also perhaps the strangest birthday present I've ever gotten myself... This'll be my longest time away from riding outside since ski seasons way back in high school, and it's amazingly my first time on crutches. So far so good. A huge thanks to my folks for coming out to help, Claire for always being so supportive, @kait.boyle and Will for a wonderful house for recovery while they're in NZ, my Teton Valley friends for helping with some meals, and the people at Teton Orthopedics for fixing me up 💚🙏 05 Nov 2026 One year ago today, 3 months into my Orogenesis thru-ride, Claire joined me at the Mexico border for the Baja part of the journey. She'll probably tell you it was one of the more challenging things she's done, not really being a mountain biker or a desert person or a lover of beans and tortillas. I'm still so proud of her for such a big accomplishment. And I'm so grateful she's here to help me through my next journey, the recovery from some surgery tomorrow to get my knee fixed up. It's hard for me to lean on people for help, but 6 weeks of crutching around certainly is going to necessitate some help. 03 Nov 2026 Some of those in-between moments from our fat bike - packraft version of the Oregon Coast Trail... #bikepacking #packrafting 01 Nov 2026 Full moon night rides are always a treat! But the piece really isn't actually about my own ride - it's about what is going to be required in the coming years to keep a trail of such monumental scale passable and enjoyable in the face of wildfires, floods, and all the other ways in which nature gradually reclaims backcountry trails. It's only going to be through the dedication of trail orgs and passionate volunteers from all different user groups (bike, moto, foot, and horse alike), and I took this article as an opportunity to share more about some of the many folks involved in the creation and maintenance of scattered pieces Orogenesis (and the Oregon Timber Trail) who I find *incredibly* inspiring. Thanks to Gabe, Chris, Remy, Matt, Sarah, Mamiko, Evan, Steve...there are too many names on the list to include them all here... Also, thanks to @ken_etzel for contributing a few of these beautiful photos and for the creative inspiration. And beyond that, I'm also very grateful to the people at Freehub, Escape Collective, The Radavist, and Singletracks for all embracing storytelling around various aspects of the development of this monumental route and my experience riding it - it's amazing to see so much enthusiasm in the media over the past year for the longest MTB trail in the world! 28 Oct 2026 My favorite styles of riding tend to be a bit different than a lot of folks...what @vittoriatires paired best for this season's adventures? 25 Oct 2026 Claire and I had a bit of a vacation planned in Washington after the Oregon Coast adventure, and the universe derailed plans a bit, but we still had time to squeeze in a bit of it! The ol' van's front diff failed in Portland, forcing us to spend most of a week across the river in Vancouver waiting for parts and a makeshift repair. Amazingly, the shop that helped out was walking distance from Brandon Baker's place (we rode most of Orogenesis across Washington together last summer), so we got to hang out with him! (And he very kindly took us in until the van was back to a driveable state). Claire and I did a bit of exploring but mostly ended up working in the unexpected down time... And then we blasted north to make the most of the few days we had left. First up was Mount St. Helens and a quick visit to the Plains of Abraham, a section of Orogenesis I was sad to miss last summer due to a closure. Then up to Leavenworth for a hike into the alpine of the Enchantments and their golden larch groves and a bit of riding...then Wenatchee to visit friends, then Missoula, and then alllll the way back to Teton Valley. Oof. A bit weary, we made it, and so did the van. Now Claire's at a writing workshop and I am in that squeeze-out-the-last-of-autumn-in-the-mountains-before-winter-arrives mode. It's also the last couple weeks of riding of the year for me before getting my knee fixed up... 24 Oct 2026 ...because adventures don't end at sunset. If not, what's your plan? 21 Oct 2026
