💛 What a week! All good stuff in so many ways, but I’m tired; and also awake (with help from coffee).
Today: @midwestwritersworkshop “Agent Fest” where I’m moderating a workshop and serving as a panelist on “Agents & Authors: A Working Relationship.” Excited to be with colleagues and participants.
**This is my can-do, go-get-em face that is different from my RBF (but both look eerily similar 😆)**

🔊 This weekend on The @facingproject: “Facing Adversity & Resilience in Sports” —
🎙️ I sit down with Dr. @ajkuban, editor of the forthcoming (11/3) anthology Facing Adversity & Resilience in Sports, to explore the book’s collection of first-person stories from athletes, coaches, and sports-media professionals whose lives have been shaped by challenges and transformative experiences within the world of sports. We’ll be joined by Ryan Sierocki, a contributor to the book and assistant athletic director at Kentucky Wesleyan College.
📚 Then, I’ll share three stories from the project (with story performances by @calebrobbins47; @amandathearies; and @jvech3ta) that cover disability, mental health, and body image in sports.
⚽️ And later, I welcome Dr. @kelcey.parker.ervick, author of The Keeper: Soccer, Me, and the Law That Changed Women’s Lives, for a conversation about her graphic memoir and its exploration of soccer, gender, and social change.

🔊 Well, we lost. But it was a huge honor to be the finalist for the Indiana Broadcasters Association’s “Non-Commercial Radio Program of the Year” award. Huge congrats to Richmond Radio Works for taking home the win! What a beautiful evening and night at the Cabaret Club in Indy!
🎧 And thanks to all of our loyal listeners, fearless storytellers, and guests who have made The Facing Project Radio Show such a joy to show up to the mic each week. May you continue to have the courage to share your stories, and the empathy to listen to others.
💛 To the entire team at Indiana Public Radio, thank you for being our home station and continuing to believe in the show and the power of stories to change hearts and minds. Sean Ashcraft: You’ve been our amazing producer and audio engineer for eight years, and it was wonderful to share this honor with you.
🌟 And @kelseytimmerman: My brother from another mother, partner in crime, and long-standing co-host—thank you for being on this journey with me and sharing this moment . . . and all others that have come before. You still owe me 987 coffees (not that I’m counting).
🎙️ “See” you on the radio this weekend!

💛 What a week in Kansas! Seven campus-community talks, a book launch for Facing Relationship-Based Violence, and a plethora of meaningful connections.
👂And let me say this: Fort Hays State University students are attentive and thoughtful, and the faculty were supportive and eager to learn and incorporate new ideas.
🗣️And the community of Hays? What a great bunch of people who are willing to dialogue and show up for the hard conversations.
🎧I also met readers and listeners, and it’s always a joy to be in space with folks who tune in each week to the radio show and have read my memoir. In those kinds of moments, people often share their own vulnerabilities and how they see themselves in the work; and I never, ever forget those interactions.
‼️AND I got to see my colleague, Mary Price; who just happened to be at Fort Hays State for different reasons, but came to the book launch.
👏 Huge congrats to Dr. Zi Qi, Dr. Lori Kniffin, Diana Angarita Santos, and all of the storytellers and writers on Facing Relationship-Based Violence. The launch is not the end, but only the beginning to where the stories will continue to move hearts and minds to action.
💛 And with that, my heart is full as I travel back to Indiana. Only one more flight!
🌟Many thanks to Fort Hays State University’s Leadership Programs, Department of Criminal Justice, Hays Public Library, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for sponsoring my visit.

🔊 This weekend on The Facing Project Radio Show: “Facing Relationship-Based Violence: A Rural Kansas Initiative” —
🎙️ I’ll be joined by Drs. Ziwei Qi and Lori E. Kniffin who are the editors of Facing Relationship-Based Violence, a collection of nineteen first-person stories from people in rural Kansas whose lives have been impacted by the harm that happens when relationships are shaped by fear and control instead of love and trust.
📚 Then, I’ll share four stories from the project (with story performances by @reb_cornell; @heather_troupe; @_syd_maurer_ ; and Tracena Marie) that cover the spectrum of survivors, their relatives, and front-line professionals.
💪 And later, I’ll be joined by psychologist and author Dr. Sherry Hamby whose new book, Stronger Than You Think: Building Lifelong Resilience, explores evidence-based strategies and resources that can help us flourish despite life’s hardest moments.

🔊 Big and exciting news for The Facing Project Radio Show —
🥇 We are a finalist for the Indiana Broadcasters Association Spectrum Award for Non-Commercial Radio Program of the Year!
And within days of finding out, we also learned that . . .
🎧 The Seattle-area NPR affiliate KBCS has picked up our show!
💛 Many thanks to our loyal listeners, and a big THANK YOU to our small but mighty production team at Indiana Public Radio. Sean Ashcraft has been our audio engineer and producer for eight years, and Angie Crow Grimes has been our biggest advocate and champion through it all. They both took a huge risk back in 2018 when they offered two guys, with no radio background, a radio show! 😆 But @kelseytimmerman and I were eager learners, and look where we’ve gotten as a team. 💛

💛 HILLBILLY QUEER . . . the little book that could. After five years, I’m still amazed and grateful that it continues to find new readers and its footprint continues to grow.
📚 Today I’m at the Starke County Public Library for a meet and greet and book signing at the Beyond the Book Festival. Many thanks to @fablesbooks for setting up shop and selling.

✍️ Getting back to the edits on my new book. Life detoured me (in good ways) the past four months, but I’m finding a good rhythm now; and, thankfully, I have a very forgiving literary agent.
💛 More soon.

🔊 This weekend on The Facing Project: “Cleanup on Aisle Five: Essential Work, Poverty Wages, and the View from Behind the Supermarket Register with author @annlarsonslc (Ann Larson)” —
🛒 For many of us, a trip to the grocery store is just another errand. We fill our carts, stand in line, and maybe exchange a few words with the cashier. Then, we head home and move on with our lives.
👂 But what if we slowed down long enough to see the people on the other side of the register? What stories would we discover? What assumptions might we leave behind?
📚 Based on her own experiences of working in a grocery store, Ann opens the box and lets us see inside through storytelling where she invites us into the world of essential workers—people whose labor keeps our communities running, but whose lives are too often invisible and dispensable.
🎤 Ann and host J.R. Jamison will explore work dignity, wage disparity, and what it means to really see one another when consumerism itself is a veil that often divides workers from shoppers.
