PEN America today reported nearly 12,000 book bans in public schools nationwide during the 2025-2026 school year—the largest number in a single year. New state censorship laws accounted for much of the increase, coupled with the use of artificial intelligence to remove books en masse including popular manga series and other graphic novels. Read the new report in full at the link in our bio. #BannedBooks #BannedBooksWeek 05 Oct 2026 In each edition, PEN America’s Freedom to Write Index profiles writers jailed during the year, alongside thematic and country-specific threats to freedom of expression. As many remain behind bars, we return to their stories to encourage international solidarity and renew calls for their immediate release. China (including autonomous regions), Iran, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, and Türkiye were the top five countries jailing the most writers during 2025. Authorities in Iran, Israel/Occupied Palestinian Territory, and Russia – three of the top ten countries jailing writers that were each engaged in conflicts during the year – targeted writers who used anti-war language or themes in their poetry, commentaries, and other work, a key pattern that emerged in the 2025 data. Learn more about Du Bin (China), Parviz Sedaghat (Iran), Noura Al-Qahtani (Saudi Arabia), Pham Doan Trang (Vietnam), Mehmet Üçar (Türkiye), Anwar Rostom (Israel / Occupied Palestinian Territory), and Artem Kamardin (Russia). All the time people don’t see [you working] is what ultimately will pay off.” Literary agent Pronoy Sarkar (@pronopticon) shared this piece of writing advice at PEN America’s October 19 event for emerging writers, ‘How Three Pages Can Change Your Life,’ at P&T Knitwear (@ptknitwear). Along with Sarkar, the event featured vice president and publisher at Hachette Nana Twusami, writers @profsue123 and @stacykim.phd, and editors @noahmichelson, @jpeskin74, and Miya Lee. The experts met to discuss guidance and recommendations for writers looking to publish nonfiction books, children’s books, personal essay columns, and more. Read their tips at the link in bio. #NewWriters #WritingProcess #DebutBooks 04 Nov 2026 As NPR reports this morning, new restrictions at Texas Tech are changing what professors can teach, with the university adopting "some of the state's most sweeping restrictions on how professors can teach about race, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation. The rules have led to changes in course materials, prompted accusations of censorship and fueled pushback from faculty and students." As PEN America's Amy Reid tells NPR, when laws are written vaguely they can cause even more censorship that the law requires, with some professors resorting to preemptive censorship to avoid running afoul of the new rules. "It's a design principle," says Reid, "not a design flaw." Read more at the link in our bio. #Censorship #HigherEducation #TexasTech 01 Jan 1970 As we begin to prepare for the holidays, PEN America and P&T Knitwear are gathering Cat Fitzpatrick, Jamilah Lemieux, and Joseph Osmundson for a Nov. 12 conversation about the many ways we build families, find belonging, and care for one another. From friends who become family to queer kinship and Black single motherhood, we’ll celebrate the relationships that sustain us while asking what it really takes to build a loving home in a world that doesn’t always make it easy. Moderated by Adriana Ladouceur (@bringme_books), this conversation will examine the emotional, social, and economic realities of creating and sustaining a family, from the cost of care to the challenge of finding connection in an increasingly isolated world. Together, we’ll consider who gets supported, whose families are recognized, and how we build the networks of love and care we all need. Learn more and get tickets at: https://pen.org/event/modern-families/ In advance of the event, Jamilah Lemieux, the author of Black. Single. Mother. (Roc Lit 101, 2026), shared recommendations on books with familial ties. Peruse her book recommendations at the link in our bio. #blackauthors #modernfamilies #queerkinship 02 Nov 2026
