What the Light Becomes, Kehinde Wiley’s fourth exhibition at the gallery opens tonight, Thursday, November 5 from 6-8pm. The artist will be present.
The exhibition focuses specifically on contemporary New Yorkers and, more broadly, on how New York represents a portrait of America at this moment, not as a single cohesive identity, but as something diverse, shifting and continually being remade. The exhibition is conceived of as a love letter to New York and a return to the subject of the city that launched Wiley’s career, after a number of years in which his practice has taken him around the world.

AESTHETICALLY TERRIFYING.
In a recent interview, Erin Scavino, Director of Art in Embassies, described Kehinde Wiley’s Young Artists After Siamesas 1960 as “very woke” and “aesthetically terrifying” following its removal from the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo.
We decided to put it on a T-shirt.
Introducing AESTHETICALLY TERRIFYING — a new hoodie and black T-shirt from the Kehinde Wiley Shop.
A response. A reclamation. A reminder that art has never needed permission to be beautiful, provocative, or powerful.

Kehinde Wiley joins Sotheby’s and LITO to rethink what an art edition can be.

Launching with six artist-conceived works inspired by Wiley’s Triple Portrait of Charles II, the collaboration brings together contemporary portraiture, advanced technology, craftsmanship, and collecting. Through LITO’s innovative production process and Sotheby’s global marketplace, the initiative proposes a new model for editions, one that preserves rarity and artistic authorship while opening new points of access for collectors.
With further artist collaborations planned, Exclusive Editions signals a broader shift in contemporary collecting, positioning the edition not as secondary to an original work, but as a creative medium in its own right.
