All the way from a remote forest in Gabon to Bulgaria, Italy, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, Korea… and many other places

Unpublished photos, from my most recent @natgeo assignment, of Shannon Hoffman - Director of @bred4thewild Bearded Vulture Breeding Programme in the southern Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The only way I could get Shannon and one of the birds together was when medical treatment was being administered. In the first photo here, Shannon isn’t actually cuddling this vulture, she has pinned the bird to her chest - one of the few ways to hold the bird in place - to examine bee stung eyes (you can see the damaged eyes more clearly in the second photo). While this is not an affectionate embrace, it does symbolise the deep care Shannon has for these endangered birds and her desperate fight to save them from extinction.

For my latest @natgeo assignment I went to Gabon with Conservation ecologist and croc expert Matt Shirley @projectmecistops. There he introduced me to the African dwarf crocodile, the world’s smallest crocodile species. Ben Goldfarb @ben.a.goldfarb writes for the magazine that “...all dwarf crocs are remarkable in their own right: resilient, adaptable animals with a penchant for breaking the usual crocodilian mold. In contrast to huge and fearsome cousins such as Nile crocodiles, dwarf crocs are timid creatures that have an average length of around five feet and emerge from burrows at night to scurry after crabs, frogs, and millipedes. This scaled-down strategy has proved wildly successful for dwarf crocs, which range from the West African coast to the continent’s interior and thrive in a variety of ecosystems. Today, though, dwarf crocs, an important source of protein for many people in West and Central Africa, are imperiled by commercial overharvesting and habitat loss.” The sun had gone down, and the crocs had come out. We found this sub-adult, off the river we were boating down, by the reflection of our torch light in their eyes. We waded through the flooded forrest, through black water that often reached our chests. Matt was an expert at navigating such watery terrain. Not me. More than once I nearly lost all my gear to the river. Revealed by my flash, the water was not black at all, but stained brown by decaying plant matter. This photo (like so many others 😢) was not published in the magazine.

Earlier this year I had the privilege to photograph @drsteveboyes in Zambia for @natgeo magazine. Last week National Geographic published a new story about his work “Discovering Where the Nile Really Starts” with this portrait and fabulous photographs by @JamesKydd and super interesting text by Brendad Borrell @bborrell. Steve was a good sport - he was willing to pose in crocodile and hippo infested waters for the portrait. All in a day’s work for Steve.

Such a privilege to get to work for @natgeo magazine - but they can only publish so much… so many photographs we work so hard for never see the light of day. So here are some that never made the cut from my latest assignment in Gabon, Uganda, Zambia, and South Africa.

My latest assignment for @natgeo magazine. Made with the support of many including @afarrar @julie_hau @gladyskalemazikusoka , Matt Shirley (@projectmecistops ), Shannon Hoffman (@bred4thewild ), not to mention the real stars of the show - our feathered, furry, scaly, and leathery friends - all of whom we need to treasure and protect.

My first @natgeo cover for eight years - and it’s a beauty thanks to my wonderful subject - this amazing forest elephant I tracked down in Gabon. Actually thanks to a bunch of others as well. I was on a little dugout canoe for three days looking for elephants. I found only one! Even then, it’s only because I had a master pilot steering me through rapids in search of these shy animals. I had no idea it would be SO hard! It’s also because I had editors willing to trust me to turn my hand to wildlife photography - their faith was greater than mine… (all respect to you real wildlife photographers out there!). But where there’s a will (and a 70-200mm lens) there’s a way.

Meet Albanis, a 1000dreams storyteller from Venezuela, collecting stories in Michigan.
People do not become refugees by choice. At times, their journey to safety is marked with danger and uncertainty, yet each refugee carries with them stories of challenges faced, strengths gained and dreams chased. Through Phimmasone and other storytellers trained by Witness Change, refugees are reclaiming their narratives—telling their own stories, in their own words.
Check out our website for stories collected by our refugee storytellers.

LOYALTY by @robinhammond and Matthieu Picon founder of #Tageos World leader in RFID will be the thirth of the « The 11 Collection » published by L’atelier Risographique. The idea for The 11 Collection emerged from the meeting of two practices that, while rooted in different fields, share a common belief: creation gains meaning when it reveals the people who build.
On one side, a venture firm accustomed to working closely with founders, where human relationships form the foundation of trust. On the other, an independent publishing house that has long supported emerging photographers by giving them space for genuine artistic freedom.
Both approaches are guided by the same attention to individual journeys, to the inner qualities that drive action and make progress possible. Through years of open conversations, this shared outlook naturally became a point of connection. From this convergence came the idea of a collection that brings forward the human forces behind entrepreneurship. @The11Collection took shape as an editorial project where photography and entrepreneurial experience interact, each illuminating the other. @thibaultgeffroy Artistic Director of the collection.#bookstagram #risography #editionsbessard #photography
