See you there! 05 Feb 2026 ‼️ ZOOM ARTIST TALK INCOMING ‼️ Thursday, February 5th @ 6 p.m. CST The MU Photo Club is so excited to have @_hannahwhitaker host an artist talk just for us! Hannah is a Brooklyn-based artist and photographer whose work has been exhibited internationally and featured in The New Yorker and Frieze. Interested in structural limitations, she makes photographs either by layering exposures onto 4×5 film through hand-cut paper screens or through the aid of elaborate sets and lighting configurations. These techniques allow her to combine the photographic with the graphic. The resulting space is both flat and dimensional, lacking optical coherence. She’ll be joining us to talk about her work, practice, and creative process. This is a great opportunity to hear from an artist working today. Seriously you do not want to miss this! *Zoom link in bio or join us in the Fine Arts building room A103. New prints by Hannah Whitaker; Emily Margarit Mason; and Daniel Everett Swing by our web shop to grab one of these or the other 20ish prints that are done so far. All prints are 40%off -> use code "HDBLACK" at checkout. -------------------------------------- Since 2020, I have been working on an open-source color project employing #risography to disrupt photographic color. These 10 prints are from a set of 60 prints that will be produced to supplement the color/shift book (coming in 2026). On the surface, color/shift is a technical resource—a library of open-source spot color values, workflow tutorials, custom profiling charts, and hundreds of ICC profiles. Beneath this toolkit, however, is a wager on possibility: that expanding the imagination through color poverty might loosen the grip the printing apparatus has on artists. In technical contexts, “color shift” names a failure; here, it becomes a method. To print is to articulate a contemporary version—this paper, these inks, this light, this moment. The print is not a copy but a version that gestures— a printed movement in the direction of meaning. color/shift thrives on connection—with artists, with printers, with images, with the printing system itself. The printer’s task is not to preserve likeness but to offer vitality. Separations, curves, and halftone screens become provocations rather than processes. The printer does not serve the file; the printer serves the life of the picture. In much the same way, publishing, too, is an apparatus. The risograph, in addition to poverty, returns the publishing act to the atelier—when decisions stay close to the work—the negotiation shifts from distribution to making. The risograph is the wrong machine. Color/shift is built on the choice to use it anyway. To embrace it as poor, local, and unruly. Zielinski’s call for variant practice, Steyerl’s defense of degradation, and Ngai’s promotion of affect all converge here. Imprecision is an ethic. “Sorry, Not Sorry” is my apology to the photographers with whom I work. 23 Nov 2025 Newest cover for @nytmag, a Frankensteined Frankenstein for a story by Parul Sehgal about our enduring fascination with Shelley’s iconic creature.
