New house species for #FrogFriday: Dainty Green Tree Frog (Chlorohyla gracilenta)
Snapped this lil cutie after some heavy rain in April. Have heard and seen them calling from about 300m away but first time seeing one in my garden ✅ Common but stunning little pond breeder. I love their purple thigh, rainbow iris and noisy but cute call.

Sand Frog (Heleioporus psammophilus) | A robust, burrowing frog specially adapted to life in deep sandy soils, where it spends much of the year underground to avoid heat and dry conditions. It emerges mainly after heavy rain, when males call from burrows or temporary wetlands with a deep, resonant call to attract females. Its strong forelimbs are perfectly suited for digging, and its mottled brown colouration provides excellent camouflage against sand and leaf litter. The Sand Frog feeds on invertebrates, including insects, beetles, spiders and other small arthropods encountered on the surface at night.
An interesting fact is that, unlike many frogs that require permanent water, Sand Frogs rely on ephemeral rain-filled wetlands, with tadpoles developing rapidly before pools dry out. Their burrowing lifestyle also allows them to survive long dry periods underground. This species is endemic to south-western Western Australia, inhabiting sandy heath, woodlands and coastal plain environments.
Was great to find this relatively hard to find Heleioporus with @_don_endriu_wildlife recently and to be able to find some more of them not too long after with @faunafinder_aus / @aiden_holmes29, @toastierhat & @bellafkis!

Western Water-holding Frog (Cyclorana occidentalis) | A robust, burrowing frog adapted to Australia’s dry interior, capable of storing significant amounts of water in its bladder and tissues during wet periods. After heavy rains, it emerges to breed explosively in temporary pools, with males producing deep, resonant calls. As conditions dry, it burrows underground and forms a cocoon to reduce moisture loss, remaining dormant until the next rainfall event. This species occurs across arid and semi-arid Western Australia, particularly in claypans, floodplains and sandy inland habitats.
Very cool seeing these frog’s present in the remaining water following some recent rain in the region with @_don_endriu_wildlife @jordansherps @jordanpreedy @joshwildartfreesoul!

Happy #WorldFrogDay ! Flashback to the Sunshine Coast during the inaugural #FrogFridayGang meet up! This tiny male Cooloola Sedge Frog (Litoria coololensis) is confined to lowland coastal wallum areas and listed is as near-threatened under the QLD Nature Conservation Act (NC Act, 1992).
A spectacular little frog (males are abt 25mm) that loves coastal wallum swamps and freshwater lakes with a pH of < 5.5. They have also been found a fair distance from water bodies in rainforest and dry eucalypt forest.
Check out their hi-vis orange armpits and groin 🧡💚🖤🐸

On a rainy night with @svmahony @bec_bec_beccy I snapped this vulnerable Green-thighed Frog (Litoria brevipalmata). This species is termed “data-deficient” and until this night, I was used to them calling for one or two nights and then disappearing (hopefully after a successful breeding event). HOWEVER, I recorded them calling (using @frogidaus) at the same site from 23 Nov 2021- 3 Dec 2021 (n=11 nights) - SWIPE to see a male still calling hard on the 11th night!
I will hopefully be publishing these results with additional @frogidaus data so we can learn more about this cryptic species! Frogs are the best. The End. #FrogFriday

An absolutely incredible example of axanthism (a mutation that interferes with an animal’s ability to produce yellow pigment and it therefore appears blue instead of green) in this Magnificent Tree Frog (Litoria splendida) for #FrogFriday

What a cracking animal and shot!! 🙌🏽🐸💚💙

It would be remise of me NOT to post a Holy Cross Frog for this #FrogFriday
Affectionately known as ‘grumpy golf balls’ and ‘Hot Cross Bun Frogs’, Notaden bennettii are truly one of my fav species of Australian frogs!
These were the first ever pics I snapped of this species on an incredible @instagram IRL meet-up with the OG #FrogFridayGang in Western QLD! We copped over 100mm in about an hour and then all of the burrowing frogs started emerging (pic 2 is the Notaden in pic 1 emerging from underground).
The last pic features the amazing artwork of a Holy Cross Frog by the super talented @eggpicnic (a collab we worked on in April 2020) which hangs proudly on mine and many other frogger’s walls!!

For #IWD2024 (and beyond) collectively, we can all #InspireInclusion
Imagine a gender equal world- a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
The aim of the 2024 International Women’s Day is to value and celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness about discrimination and take action to drive gender parity.
With that, I introduce to you, Australia’s second feminist frog- Neobatrachus sudellae (Common Spadefoot Frog) whose name was emended in 2012 by Dr Glenn Shea of the @australianmuseum from the masculine (sudelli) to the feminine (sudellae) to match the gender after whom this frog was named (Miss Jane Anne Sudell).
The first feminist Australian frog was the Tasmanian Tree Frog (Litoria burrowsae). Its scientific name was emended in 1998 by Dr Glenn Shea from the masculine (burrowsi) to the feminine (burrowsae).
The species was named for the discoverer, Miss Laura Myrtle Burrows of Launceston, an artist and keen bushwalker, one of the first solo female bushwalkers in #tasmania
Isn’t Science just the best?!! 💚🐸 #InspireInclusion in #STEM

Frogs are great, until the one you try to photograph calling is perched high on a rock above filthy stinging nettles and a barbed wire fence “Life as a shorty, shouldn’t be so rough” 😅
A Southern Orange-eyed Tree #frog (Litoria chloris) for your #FrogFriday
Snapped with @cassie_thommo when we went out looking for Regent Bowerbirds (and failed).

Having recently relocated to the Northern Rivers of NSW (Bundjalung Jagun), I was astonished by the over-abundance of invasive Cane Toads (Rhinella marina). To help #CareForCountry and #HealCountry I became a volunteer for @watergumcommunity to ‘bust’ Cane Toads in my local area and be the local drop off point for any residents to drop off Cane Toads they have collected. Collected Cane Toads are humanely euthanised and their glands are harvested to make lures for super effective tadpole traps (which trap ONLY Cane Toad tadpoles!) NATURE IS SO RAD!
Pictured here for your #FrogFriday content is the native Red-backed Toadlet (Pseudophryne coriacea) which I saw this week on my nightly “Cane Toad bust”. I have included an #iphone photo (slide 5) which shows how they may be mistaken for a Cane Toad by an untrained eye. Slide 4 shows the marbled belly characteristic of the Pseudophryne genus, as opposed to the mottled belly of a Cane Toad. The last slide shows the Watergum team with @marionanstis getting their copy of her Tadpoles and Frogs ‘bible’ getting autographed at my place!!
Since starting my Cane Toad busting, I am seeing less Cane Toads around one of the known breeding locations and am seeing and hearing more native frogs species. I’ll take this as a small win for now 🐸💚🐸💚
(Native frogs photographed with a current NSW Scientific Licence and Ethics permit, and handled in accordance with hygiene protocols).
Red-backed Toadlet calls were recorded for @frogidaus
