“What Jared Kushner served as in the first administration has become the model for what Trump has done in the second administration, which is only trusted members, family or very close business friends who serve as the leaders of U.S. foreign policy,” says investigative journalist Matthew Cole.
Cole’s new book is “Princes and Thieves: Jared Kushner and Mohamed bin Zayed's Secret Plot to Remake the Middle East.” Kushner has denied Cole’s findings, saying, “The allegations made by this author are completely insane, categorically false, and never happened.”

Mississippi's race for the U.S. Senate remains too close to call: Democrat Scott Colom is narrowly leading Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith by nearly 2,000 votes with 96% of votes counted as of Friday morning. Donald Trump carried Mississippi by 23 points in 2024. If elected, Colom would be the first Democrat to win the state in 40 years and the first African American since 1875, during the Reconstruction era. He has sharply criticized national Democrats for writing off Mississippi and failing to invest in his campaign early on.
"The entire country shifted left. But when you look at it regionally, the biggest shifts took place in the South — Texas, Mississippi, South Carolina, Louisiana," says Cliff Albright, executive director of Black Voters Matter. That "wave of energy" was "largely led by Black voters who were most under attack with the mid-decade racial gerrymandering that was taking place. It clearly backfired, and all it did was to wake up a sleeping giant."

Tuesday was a historic night for progressive Democrats and, in particular, candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America. Six new DSA-endorsed candidates were elected to the House, and democratic socialists won mayoral races in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Providence.
"The Democratic Socialists of America had a phenomenal night, and this movement is only going to continue to grow," says leftist political commentator Hasan Piker. “But also, what I heard in terms of rhetoric from the likes of James Talarico, or even John Ossoff, or Annie Andrews in South Carolina, or even Colom in Mississippi, is the left populist rage that they were able to tap into.”

California's outgoing Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, announced Thursday that he will grant clemency to all 548 prisoners currently on death row. They now face life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Newsom's move came seven years after he placed a moratorium on executions in California.
"California has gone two decades without an execution, yet, with more than 550 people, has the largest death row in the nation," Nadia Daar, executive director of Amnesty International USA, said in response. "Governor Newsom’s decision turns that long pause into meaningful and lasting progress against an inherently cruel, discriminatory and irreversible system that is antithetical to human rights."

Nithya Raman, a 45-year-old democratic socialist, will be the next mayor of Los Angeles, defeating incumbent Mayor Karen Bass for leadership of the second-largest city in the United States. The Associated Press called the race late Thursday.
Raman, who has served on City Council since 2020, campaigned on affordability and improving quality of life in L.A. She is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and had the endorsement of the local chapter, though the national DSA organization considered revoking that endorsement for her shifting position on boycotting Israel.
Raman's win solidifies gains for the DSA in the 2026 elections and brings another major U.S. city under socialist leadership. Next year, socialist mayors will lead New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Washington, D.C., and Providence, Rhode Island.

A newly formed wage board in Bangladesh agreed on Wednesday to a revised pay scale for garment workers beginning in December.
The deal came as wage protests entered a fifth day, with workers clashing with police, who responded with volleys of tear gas. Several factories were forced to halt production.
Workers are demanding the monthly minimum wage rise to about $242 a month. The garment industry employs about 4 million people in Bangladesh.

Google has announced that it will switch off its AI tools for student accounts, requiring school administrators to turn them on. But schools that reject AI entirely will lose student access to Google search. Google's vice president for education said students at those schools will simply see a message that search is unavailable.
The move comes after New York City and Los Angeles restricted AI tools on school devices this year.
Lina Khan, who served as chair of the Federal Trade Commission under President Biden, said on X, "Google is using its search monopoly to coerce schools into adopting AI. This highlights the danger of allowing an unregulated monopolist to control an essential service."
