For visionary gallerist Marian Goodman, Gerhard Richter's vibrant abstractions held particularly personal significance.
When she began representing Richter in 1985, she was not following consensus. Richter was admired in Germany, but in the United States his reputation had yet to take hold. Since then, he has come to be recognized as one of the world's most important living painters.
These works reflect the artist's extraordinary command of colour, texture and chance, as well as a relationship between artist and gallerist that extended beyond the gallery.

When Andy Warhol invited David Hockney to sit for a portrait in 1973, he captured more than a likeness. The resulting work brought together two distinct artistic visions, revealing the warmth, wit, and mutual admiration behind an extraordinary creative exchange.
Rendered in vivid strokes of blue, lavender and green, 'David Hockney' is now offered from the collection of legendary music executive Clive Davis, a friend of both artists, providing a rare glimpse into the friendships and artistic connections that shaped the 1970s.

Gustav Klimt’s ‘Litzlbergkeller’ set the artist’s auction record when it last appeared on the market in 1997. After nearly three decades in private hands, this rare masterpiece headlines our 20th Century Evening Sale.
Painted in 1915–16 and inspired by the artist's summer travels, this poetic landscape at Lake Attersee captures Klimt at his most contemplative. Composed of a brilliant tapestry of jewel-toned brushwork, the tranquil view of the lakeshore gives way to an increasingly abstract reflection. The result is a striking meditation on nature, memory and introspection that is, at once, modern in execution.

Andy Warhol spent his career turning others into icons. In his final years, he turned that same vision upon himself.
Painted in 1986, just months before his death, Warhol's monumental ‘Self-Portrait’ presents the artist on a larger-than-life scale. With his unmistakable 'fright wig' and penetrating gaze, Warhol confronts the viewer directly, yet reveals remarkably little of the man behind his carefully constructed public persona.
Michael Baptist, Vice President and Specialist of Post-War and Contemporary Art, explores how this striking work reflects Warhol's lifelong fascination with image-making and his ability to secure his own place in American cultural history.

Gustav Klimt. The Bloch-Bauers. Egon Schiele. These names were part of a flourishing art world in Vienna. Then, with the Anschluss, or the Nazi annexation of Austria of 1938, lives were upended, families were persecuted and works of art disappeared from the collections of those who had commissioned, collected and cherished them.
Lost Vienna: Restitution of a Golden Age explores the stories of Jewish collectors, dealers and the journeys of the works they left behind. Told through the work and lives of Klimt and Schiele, these stories illuminate a lost world — and the legacies that endure.

“For Botero, volume is the essence of beauty.” — Fernando Botero Jr. on his father's artistic approach
Over the course of decades, Fernando Botero sought to perfect his vision of the horse, a subject deeply rooted in his childhood memories of Colombia. Standing over eleven feet tall, 'Horse' (2006) embodies the artist's inimitable vision of beauty.
Filmed in his father's studio in Paris, Botero Jr. reflects on the sculpture's creation, its journey around the world and the family legacy it carries across generations.

Meet Cuban artist Wifredo Lam's son Eskil as he shares the diverse cultural milieu and sources that shaped his father's remarkable work.
Before Lam returned to his native Cuba in 1941, his time in Europe brought him into the heart of the Surrealist movement, alongside such key figures as André Breton. These influences would take on new meaning upon his return to the Caribbean in 1941.
Painted in 1943, 'Ogue Orisa' synthesizes Lam’s unique contribution to the history of surrealism through his recuperation of Afro Cuban culture, particularly its spiritual and religious customs, as a tool for accessing the world of the unconscious and the fantastical.
