What makes a good story? And what makes us want to tell one?
In Issue 04, @chrisburkard shares ten principles of storytelling, drawing on lessons learned throughout his career photographing, exploring and documenting the natural world.
Inspired by his latest book, Out There, the piece is a playful look at what makes a story worth telling - whether you’re behind the camera or simply out there having an adventure.

The final 2 days of Fatbiking & Packrafting the Oregon Coast Trail looked at the ground we’d covered & said “You ain’t seen nothing yet.” We had many good times, but a lot of hard going too. Hours on hours of riding through cold wet fog. The unrepentant moisture. High tides shutting down access points & forcing long reroutes. Logs, soft sand, and other obstacles making us carry our fully loaded bikes. The first 3/4 of the trip had tested us & we were feeling it.
On day 7 though, something shifted. Fog & clouds lifted as we climbed Cape Blanco, revealing rugged headlands & wide sandy beaches soaring into the horizon. Traversing through those southern beaches, towns & capes was even better than it had appeared from above. We enjoyed sun for miles on end, and then, right around the end of day 7 as we approached the pistol river, the magic happened. Wind strummed the sand into gentle flows across the beach. The sun hummed lower, rapidly turning bright gold along the horizon. The waves seemed to crash on cue, their rich blue accentuating the intensity of the light. As we approached the next stacks of rocks, we saw it all come together in a symphony of light & movement played out across the jagged stage of rocks. It was a moment I’ll never forget. We all rode around in awe, soaking it all in, grateful to have gotten a perfect Oregon Coast evening at last.
The high stuck with us after the sun set, but we had a few miles to go. We all locked back in after Kurt nearly got swept away by the Pistol River & gratefully slid into bed at Crook Point.
Finally, the following day we entered the Samuel H Boardman scenic corridor. With only a few miles left to the border and plenty of time left in the day, we enjoyed the numerous stunning vistas on offer. We paddled across the Chetco River, the final crossing on our journey, and without any further fuss for the cyclists, we rode a few more miles of beach & road, the rolled up to the border of California.
400 miles. 10 rivers paddled. Some very sandy smiles. We were done, and damn was that a good time.

Join Rapha ambassador @chrisburkard at the @oztrailsbikepark next Thursday, October 15 for afternoon laps and an evening screening of his latest film followed by a Q&A and signing.
An expedition 30 years in the making, “Searching for supercrust” explores the past, present, and future of Europe’s largest glacier through the stories of those who have braved the glacier’s icy expanse on two wheels.
Ticket sales, discounted lift passes and more info can be found at the link in our bio.

I’m taking my film “Searching for SuperCrust” on a West Coast tour! Seattle at the REI Flagship store on December 3rd, San Francisco & LA at Rapha’s Clubhouses on December 4th & 11th respectively.
Something I love about these events is just getting to take everyone deeper into the story. The film is rich & complex, but plenty of interesting detail had to be left on the cutting room floor. At these screenings I get the opportunity to share some of that, to enrich your experience. You all get the opportunity to ask me questions too and guide where that enrichment goes. Getting to take our storytelling experience beyond the screen is a special thing these days. I treasure it and hope you do too. You can find tickets for all these events at the link in my bio or at www.searchingforsupercrust.com
Shout out to @duerperformance for helping us get this screening done in Seattle and @rapha_n_america for their support in hosting us in SF and LA!

I’ve never ridden more miles in a puffy jacket than Greenland - to say the weather was ‘unpredictable’ would be an understatement. We endured both dark frigid nights and beautiful blue skies during our ride across the Ice-to-Coast trail & back. It’s a hard place to pack for in general & gets harder when you have to carry everything on a bike. Every liter of space becomes precious.
@outdoorresearch asked me to test their new Helium Down Hoodie I was very intrigued. It was a thicker puffy than I had planned on bringing. But after the first night of snow I was a very happy boy. We saw rain, sleet, snow and frost every day of our trip. After thrashing it in the field for a bit & sleeping in it almost every night, I’d say it held up quite beautifully and even managed to not wet out when riding it in light rain thanks to the waterproof Dermizax layers covering the 800 fill down which gave peace of mind in the damp coastal arctic weather.
When the going got tough, the mud got too deep to ride in, and the temps got way lower than they were supposed to, I was pretty glad I had said yes to a burlier puffy than I ever planned to bring.
Thanks @brodyleven @joshreids @chrismshane for the photos 🤌

NEW EPISODE LIVE NOW ☕
Guest: Chris Burkard
Surfing at sunrise. A Rocky-style workout on the beach. A little dance on a platform (you’ll see 😂). And somewhere in between, some big questions about life choices.
I spent a full day with Chris Burkard, the photographer and filmmaker who treats the whole world as his canvas. Then we slowed down, had fika, and got real.
Full episode is out now 👉 Link in bio

We got totally fogged out deep in Iceland's Westfjords during a sailing photography workshop. Land was barely visible and, without even a breath of wind coming through, hopes for clear sky were far off. The only thing left to do was pull out the SUP, paddle across the eerily still water, and capture this surreal moment of stillness.

During our trip to Kamchatka in 2012 we foud board-snapping waves, argued with Russian soldiers, and watched locals shoot firearms seemingly at random into the dunes, but what really made us question our safety was the transportation. From Soviet-era MI8 choppers that seemed to operate more on the stubbornness of their pilots and a helping of elbow grease to old troop carrier trucks that could somehow still hold a terrifyingly fast pace through overgrown forest roads, it felt like we’d been transported back to a time before safety regulations or sanity. This sense turned out to be fairly representative of the whole adventure. We scored waves that wouldn’t have been out of place on any latitude coast, but had likely never seen a surfboard on their face. We fished for food alongside men who were doing the same - and would continue to do so long after we returned to our western cocoon of comfort and convenience. The whole time we were watched over by looming volcanoes, to which we were just a tiny blip in the 50,000 years of life that had unfolded beneath them. It was a surreal adventure coming to this place out of time, and I think it’s fair to say it gave all six of us a more well-rounded outlook on life.

Sun rays blasted through the tall Sitka spruce & shore pine in Florence Oregon as we loaded our rafts to kick off day five of the Oregon Coast Trail. We were joined by heaps of seals as we paddled the Siuslaw River toward the south jetty & Oregon Dunes. The beauty of this crossing shot morale through the roof. The Oregon Dunes OHV area is capped by the Siuslaw on the north and the Umpqua on the south, forming an almost whale tail-esque geography, which meant we didn’t see town or road for two river crossings.
For the Umpqua, we got lucky with a hiker/ biker ferry. We restocked food in Winchester Bay & continued south, into the fog, on a long stretch of isolated beach that would spit us out at the mouth of the Coos River & the massive Coo’s Bay. We paddled once again before rolling into Sunset Bay State Park at dusk & made camp in the beautiful yurts, that are housed at the campground there.
The morning featured a carb load at a local cafe & resupply since racoons got into some of our food overnight. Then, we pinned it south to Bandon! With a gusty paddle across the Coquille River, we landed in the sunny, busy town of downtown Bandon, grabbed great coffee & lunch and road south with the wind at our backs through the Lord of the Rings like sea stacks on the Bandon Beach. It was another beautiful moment on par with the sun rays from the morning prior, though a whole lot more moody with the fog rolling back in. 20 miles south through dropping temps and worsening fog, we reached Floras Lake and decided to call it a day. The soft sand was relentless on this stretch & we were starting to feel the wear and tear on our bikes and bodies. With two days to go, we were feeling good about our mileage and looked forward to the morning ride through Cape Blanco instead of doing it in the fog & dark.

I'm offering a 1 day workshop in Laguna Beach this Sunday, October 18th. Field workshops are great, but I run classroom-based occasionally workshops because it allows me to engage more thoroughly with both subject-matter and you all who come to learn. I'll be going over some of the most important lessons I've taken away from my years as a professional photographer - everything from building a brand to best practices and working with clients, as well as shooting and photo-theory. Spots are filling up so be sure to grab your place now!
This workshop caps off an incredible weekend with @coastfilmfestival where I’ll be screening my film “Searching For SuperCrust” and speaking alongside the likes of John John Florence and other incredible athletes and artists. You can find tickets and details for all their excellent events on their page

Day 4 on the Oregon Coast Trail kicked off with a misty bridge crossing in dense fog as we crossed the Yaquina River departing Newport. This was one of the only bridges on our route due to the long jetty rocks and lack safe beach exits for our rafts. For the next 50 miles we reveled in relatively pleasant weather and good riding too. We paddled across the Alsea Bay with fairly calm water. The whole crew then stopped at an epic little bike co-op in Waldport to rinse the sand and salt corroded gear before continuing down the beach to the volcanic reefs above Yachats. In town, we stopped at one of the best coffee shops on the whole trip and soaked in some sun and the view south before continuing on till nightfall.
We crashed for the night at a campsite near Florence OR, marking the 200 mile point of our journey from Astoria to Brookings…. almost the exact midpoint. Spirits were still high even though the legs felt heavy. Still a lot of coast left to go.

I’m screening my latest film “Searching For SuperCrust” in Bentonville Arkansas this Thursday October 15th! I’ll be riding OZ Trails Bikepark and then hosting a great evening there. I’ll present the film, give a bit of behind the scenes and time for Q&A then be around to mingle and sign books and prints. Some tickets are still available so grab them now! You can go to searchingforsupercrust.com or just click the link on my page.
This is a collection of a few more intimate and striking frames from the film. As we traversed Vatnajokull not everything was captured as stills, so these only were revealed as we started going through the footage itself.
