There were once trillions of oysters in New York Harbor. They created habitat, filtered water, and supported a port city that shaped a global economy. By the early twentieth century, they were gone. Overharvesting, pollution, and unchecked development erased them, and with that … the city’s connection to its harbor. The Clean Water Act of 1972 changed that. Water quality has improved since. Today, we’re seeing dolphins, whales, seals, and all kinds of birds using these waterways. And oyster reefs will only accelerate all of it. Oysters are a foundation species like trees in a forest or coral in a reef. They create the structure everything else depends on. They are what New York harbor is built on. That's why restoring one billion oysters matters. And why engaging one million students matters just as much. Oysters can rebuild the harbor's foundation, but our next generation of harbor stewards will determine if it lasts. We’re inviting you to see a New York many never knew existed. An urban estuary shaped by wildlife, clean water, and living systems worth protecting. Get out on the water with us. And learn more by visiting our BRAND NEW WEBSITE!! The good news? Oysters can. That’s why today, we're focused on restoring oysters at a scale never attempted in an urban harbor. We design, permit, build, and monitor oyster reefs across New York Harbor with the goal of connecting individual sites into a harbor-wide system. Data guides our decision-making, and what we’ve learned is that mortality outpaces recruitment when populations are too small. Here, restoration only works at estuary scale, reaching a threshold where the system can sustain itself. Want to learn more? Visit our new website and click “restoration”. Restoration only lasts when people are part of it. In order for a Harbor to thrive, we need people working alongside nature, and who deeply care. It will take a generation of New Yorkers who value their natural spaces to make that happen. To us, it starts with students. Kids who grow up understanding that the Harbor is part of their lives and they have the power to shape its future. We work with students and teachers across New York City, connecting classrooms to the Harbor through waterfront expeditions, curriculum, in-school workshops, and service days—linking back to our restoration work. These experiences allow students to explore the Harbor firsthand and build a real understanding of science AND the value of being outdoors. When teachers adopt this approach, the impact extends far beyond the classroom. By 2030, Billion Oyster Project will reach one million students across New York City. We are building environmental literacy for the next generation, and a sense of agency that no one can take away from our city’s youth. Want to learn more? Visit our new website and click “education”. And if you like doing it by the water, then … we’ve got you covered! Maybe you're into sitting on a rooftop or watching ferries drift by. Or perhaps you want to look out over the skyline instead. Whatever your preference, these restaurants that made our Top 5 list offer some of the best views in the city and also come with a dozen oysters! Many of New York’s top seafood restaurants are part of our Shell Recycling Program. That means when you order oysters, the shells don't end up in a landfill. Instead, they're collected, cured, and returned to New York Harbor to become the foundation for future oyster reefs. So your next dozen means a little bit more than usual. Every oyster you eat helps restore the Harbor. So dining out is an act of conservation. Want to get involved? Eat oysters! 📍 Save this list for your next waterfront adventure. @abckitchens @pjclarkes @riverparknyc @c___r___e___w @watermarkny #BillionOysterProject #ShellRecycling #NewYorkHarbor #SustainableSeafood #GetOnTheWater 05 Nov 2026 Meet the 11 runners representing #TeamBillionOyster in this Sunday’s 2026 #TCSNYCMarathon! 🏃‍♀️ Each of them is running to help rebuild the ecological foundation of this city, restoring oyster reefs across New York Harbor and putting agency in the hands of the next generation of harbor stewards 🦪💙 Cheer them on and help them reach their fundraising goals. Every dollar supports hands-on education and oyster restoration across NYC. Thank you to Tito’s Handmade Vodka @titosvodka for supporting Billion Oyster Project with a donation to our 2026 TCS New York City Marathon team! We’re grateful for their support of our runners and our mission to restore New York Harbor. 💪 Tap the link in our bio to support our runners with a donation 🌊 29 Oct 2026 The future of New York Harbor is being shaped by remarkable women. And we are so thankful that we have some of the most dedicated on our team! From marine scientists and restoration practitioners to educators, divers, and field technicians, women are leading some of the most important work happening on and around the water today. We're proud to help create pathways into blue and green careers because restoring an ecosystem takes every perspective and every generation. The more people who see themselves in this work, the stronger our future will be. To every woman helping restore our harbor, advance science, and inspire what's next: thank you. Here's to restoring a waterfront where everyone belongs. #BillionOysterProject #WomenInSTEM #BlueJobs #GreenJobs #GetOnTheWater 28 Oct 2026 You've probably heard the term STEM before. But what does it actually mean? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Or, the fields helping us solve some of the world's biggest challenges. For us, STEM is something lived and experienced. It's explored by collecting data on the waterfront. Or monitoring oyster reefs and testing water quality. It’s when students are able to learn about aquaculture. To us, STEM means to ask hard questions. To make observations, always and often. And it certainly is all about discovering how an ecosystem so close to home works. The best part? You don't have to wait until you're an adult to become a scientist. And everyone's welcome. All it takes is getting outside and spending more time on the water. Want to know more about STEM programs? As world leaders gather for COP31 this early November, this mural reminds us of the urgency of climate action and the importance of protecting vulnerable communities. This video is an ode to the tireless efforts of communities in New York and the Pacific Islands working to limit the impacts of rising seas and protect the places we all call home. 🌎 📍 440 W 41st Street, New York City The mural was made possible thanks to the kind support of Standard Communities. An immense shout out to our friends at @climatecentral, @billionoyster and @pacificclimatewarriors for the incredible work they are doing leading the change. And, thank you @sheratonlincolnharbor for making sure we could peacefully recharge our batteries every day. #ClimateActionMurals #StreetArtForMankind #ArtWithAPurpose #ClimateAction #COP31 27 Oct 2026 Did you know that we dive in New York Harbor … regularly! In fact, it’s one of our favorite things to do! And what we're finding down there is unbelievable. Our reef sites are three dimensional, living structures. They are infrastructure, habitat, and food source all at once. Where there are oysters, there is life. Think of oyster reefs as the cooler water coral reef. What do we see the most? Seahorses, sea stars, American eels. Most of New York has no idea this Harbor holds this much life! This is what restoration looks like when it's working. Our team has been in the field diving constantly, monitoring reefs, tracking growth, and documenting what's coming back to New York Harbor. Sign up to our email list to get regular updates on what we find. The program brings together leaders from across the environmental sector who are advancing climate solutions and helping shape a more resilient future. As one of the leaders of our mission, Carolyn is doing exactly that. Every day, she leads the restoration work helping bring one billion oysters back to New York Harbor by 2030. From designing restoration strategies and advancing the science behind our reefs to leading one of the country's most ambitious urban restoration efforts, her work is helping prove what's possible when innovation and determination come together. Congratulations, Carolyn. We're lucky to have you as it wouldn’t be possible to shape the future of New York Harbor without you. Medium-sized with a clean, crisp flavor, savory notes, and a sweet finish. 23 Oct 2026 We’re excited to share that Billion Oyster Project is growing our team! We’re currently hiring a Senior Fabrication Technician. This role builds the foundation of our restoration work. You’ll lead fabrication on Governors Island from March through November, working alongside public volunteers, corporate groups, and New York Harbor School students to build the reef structures that go into the harbor. Day to day, that means running hands-on fabrication events, keeping projects on schedule, managing tools and supplies, and stewarding our 27,000 square foot shell pile and fabrication yard where recycled oyster shell cures before it goes back in the water. You’ll work closely with our Fabrication and Volunteer teams and become the go-to guide for the hundreds of New Yorkers who roll up their sleeves to help restore the harbor each season. If you’re a hands-on builder who loves working outdoors, enjoys teaching groups of all ages, and wants your craft to have a real environmental impact, we’d love to hear from you.
