Welcome to Biosphere 2.
This unique research center is dedicated to understanding how Earth’s ecosystems function—and how we can build a more resilient future for our planet and for life beyond it.
Today, as part of the University of Arizona, Biosphere 2 advances interdisciplinary science, education, and innovation. Our mission is to study natural and human-made ecosystems through integrated research that drives the discovery of solutions supporting the resilience of environmental systems and human quality of life. From the rainforest and ocean biomes to the Landscape Evolution Observatory, our facility enables experiments that can’t be done anywhere else in the world.
The story of Biosphere 2 includes one of the most ambitious ecological experiments ever attempted. Built in the 1980s by Space Biospheres Ventures, the facility became internationally known for two sealed missions between 1991 and 1994, when teams of “Biospherians” lived inside the enclosure to explore long-duration closed ecological systems. Their work continues to inform ecological science, natural systems research, and concepts for future space habitats.
Since 2011, the University of Arizona—supported by the Philecology Foundation and major research grants—has carried this legacy forward, transforming Biosphere 2 into a global hub for environmental and Earth systems research.
Today, Biosphere 2 remains what it has always been: a place for big ideas, bold experiments, and new possibilities.
We’re glad you’re here.

Meet the University of Arizona students, Madalyn van Asselt and Maisy O’Neill, who have been trekking deep into the Biosphere 2 Rainforest to help scientists understand how ecosystems cycle trace gases.
Armed with LI-COR trace-gas analyzers—tools normally used in major field expeditions—they’re measuring methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide coming from soils, roots, and standing water. These gases play a huge role in how forests store and release carbon, but they’re notoriously hard to measure in complex environments.
By collecting high-resolution flux data across the rainforest, these students are helping researchers map where these trace gases originate and how/why they move through an ecosystem. Their work will support everything from tree physiology and forest modeling to future conservation strategies—and it’s giving them hands-on experience that most students don’t get until graduate school (or beyond).
This is what learning looks like at the University of Arizona: curious minds, real research, and a rainforest full of stories waiting to be uncovered.

The Paperbark thorn can be found in the Upper Savanna. The Paperbark thorn tree is benefits for landscapes for their ability to bring nitrogen back to the soil. These trees are highly drought tolerant and prefers light. The Paperbark thorn has long white spines to protect themselves from browsing animals.

The Rainforest at Biosphere 2 is more than just a beautiful view it helps us unlock the secrets of rainforests around the world. We have three different levels in our rainforest biome and on each level the temperature is different. On the lowest level is the area where it is coolest and at the top of the mountain is where it is hottest. We are able to see how our plants are affected by the different temperature levels and how that may affect its growth rate. Here, we are able to learn how rising temperature fluctuations affect the rainforest canopy, and how soil microbes play a vital role in shaping it.

The Egyptian thorn is a tree native to Africa and the Middle East but can be found in the Savanna biomes of Biosphere2. It is valued for its durable lumber, firewood, and its use in producing adhesives and certain traditional medicines. The tree thrives in full sun and plays an important ecological role its nitrogen fixing roots enrich the soil, improving fertility for surrounding plants. From summer through winter, the Egyptian thorn produces distinctive puffball like yellow flowers, making it easy to identify in its natural habitat.

The pink peacock flower is a striking beauty in the desert biome. While these vibrant shrubs are most commonly seen in red, they can bloom in a variety of colors including this stunning pink. Thriving in full sunlight, peacock flowers are an excellent way to add bold color to your garden. Even better, they attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees so by planting one, you’re not just enhancing your space, you’re also supporting local pollinators.

Ever want to get a better view of the corals similar to what we have in the Ocean biome? Check out the tank in the Kitchen or the human habitat. The type that we have in the tank are electric daisy, superman, and birds nest. The coral we have in the tank are from a different project that has finished now but we found a new way for our guests to enjoy corals at Biosphere 2!

Happy Halloween Biosphere 2 Fans! We had what we believe to be a Grand Canyon Black Tarantula visit not too long ago so we thought we would feature it today! The Grand Canyon Black tarantula is also known as the goliath bird-eating spider, it is the largest species of tarantula in the world. It can reach to four inches from one leg tip to the other! Tarantulas eat everything from insects to small rodents and lizards. When hunting these spiders either ambush their prey or chase it down rather than using webs.

The sapodilla is a tree native to southern Mexico and Central America, and it can be found in the Upper Savanna at Biosphere 2. Sapodillas are best known for their fruit, which is sweet and often described as tasting like a mix of brown sugar and pear, with a similar texture to that of a pear. Rich in fiber and vitamin C, sapodillas can make a delicious and nutritious addition to smoothies or desserts.
