THE SCREEN GAP NOVEMBER UPDATE Halloween is over, but the scares keep coming: only 2 out of 17 films that are in wide release this month (which means bigger marketing budgets and more theaters) are directed or co-directed by a woman or gender-expansive person. For films in limited release.... a mere 9 out of 28. Directors shape the stories we see and those stories influence our culture. Women and gender-expansive people are 50% of the population, yet they directed only 12% of the films in WIDE RELEASE. Without equitable representation and support for diverse directors, we miss out on vital perspectives, inspiring voices, and creative innovation. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Vote with your dollars. Buy a ticket. Show up at the theater. Repost this and spread the word about films directed by women and gender-expansive people. Every action you take sends a message to production companies, studios, and distributors about the stories you want to see. Let’s celebrate these films and also keep advocating and fighting for more representation in the director’s chair!
