For the Kogui people, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region of Colombia is a sacred territory – the spiritual and ecological heart of their existence. With the support of IGAC and ACT, the Kogui recently took part in a native place names project, mapping and documenting 36 sacred sites and 3 community spaces.
These are not just geographic markers on a map, but also linguistic expressions of ancestral knowledge that continue to guide the Kogui worldview. You can take a journey through each location, with stunning photos and stories, on the IGAC website.

🌎 From the Amazon to the sea, Indigenous peoples protect life where it begins — and where it flows.
They don’t separate the forest from the ocean, the land from the stories, or nature from culture. Everything is connected.
That’s why we follow their lead — a path that has taken us from North to South, from Mexico to the Andes, from Colombia to Brasil, from the Guiana Shield to the Amazon.
Because protecting the Earth means listening to those who have defended it for generations.
🌳 On this day — and every day — we honor and recognize Indigenous Peoples.
#IndigenousPeoplesDay

🌊 🔨
The work on the beach never ends!
Our team on the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, is already building a new hatchery for the upcoming 2027 nesting season.
Securing this perimeter takes a lot of effort, but it is well worth it to keep the eggs—which are highly vulnerable—safe from predators like crabs, birds, and raccoons.
A safe space for the next generation of sea turtles!

🌎
The future of our oceans is in good hands.
Success in monitoring sea turtles means nothing if we do not ensure its continuity.
By training young people to monitor the movements of sea turtles and record data on their health, we are combining ancestral knowledge with marine science. Future generations are not merely conserving; they are stepping into the role of new guardians of their territories.

What We Carry Forward, Traditional Knowledge Skills and Land. A short documentary
Premieres today at 12 PM on YouTube and Facebook!
Join us for the premiere of What We Carry Forward, Traditional Knowledge, Skills and Land, a short documentary exploring the importance of passing Indigenous knowledge, skills, languages, stories, and cultural practices from one generation to the next.
Through the South Rupununi Conservation Society's Traditional Knowledge and Skills Transmission Programme, village elders work directly with youth to teach skills such as cotton spinning, weaving, crafting, traditional resource use, storytelling, and Indigenous languages, helping to strengthen cultural identity and keep important traditions alive for future generations.
As communities across the Rupununi face the ongoing loss of traditional knowledge, this programme creates opportunities for elders and youth to learn together, ensuring that culture, connection to the land, and Indigenous ways of life continue to thrive.
Filmed by Shannon Holland with the South Rupununi Conservation Society (SRCS) and generously supported by Amazon Conservation Team Guianas this film celebrates the knowledge holders, teachers, and young people carrying their culture forward.

This is how early mornings sound on Day 3 of the 22-day ranger training! 🌿
ACT-Guianas is hosting this training in Suriname for community rangers from South Suriname and the Matawai area to further strengthen their forest monitoring skills, in collaboration with an International Ranger Federation (IRF) representative.
The intensive program starts at 6:00 AM with morning exercises and continues with practical survival skills training until 8:00 PM. Cultural sharing evenings and sessions with relevant local authorities will also bring community knowledge, traditions, and the Surinamese perspective into the training.
The training is led by Marcello Segalerba Bourdette, a certified and experienced IRF ranger trainer.

What’s at stake at COP17?
In Yerevan, discussions focus on funding for biodiversity protection, who governs the territories that safeguard it, and how strongly Indigenous Peoples’ voices will be represented in global decision-making.
Commitments only work when resources and support reach the communities who live in these territories and understand their needs firsthand.

🌎 What is COP17, and why will we be there?
From October 19 to 30, Yerevan, Armenia will host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17). For the first time, countries will collectively assess progress toward the 23 targets agreed upon in Montreal. COP17 is a key global forum where countries make decisions on how to protect and restore the planet’s biodiversity.
At ACT, we arrive with a firm belief: biodiversity conservation is not possible without the Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant communities, and local communities who protect it through their territories, knowledge, and traditional farming practices.
📍 Here's where you can find us:
🔹 Oct 23 · Financing Connectivity: Corridors Supported by Public, Private, and Community Investment
🔹 Oct 27 · From Knowledge to Action: Indigenous Knowledge and Biodiversity Science from the Territory
🔹 Oct 28 · Indigenous Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact (PIACI) and the Kunming-Montreal Framework: Rights, Territories, and Biodiversity in South America
🔹 Oct 29 · From Chacras to COP: Launch of the Amazonian Food Atlas

Indigenous Peoples are not only connected to some of the world’s most biodiverse territories, they are leading the way in protecting them🌿
This Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the United States, we celebrate Indigenous leadership, living knowledge, and the communities defending their lands, cultures, and biodiversity in a changing climate.
At ACT, we believe conservation works best when communities lead and their knowledge and decisions are at the center.
Protecting the future starts with listening to those who have been shaping it all along.

We’re celebrating World Migratory Bird Day through the lens of Manuel Sánchez!
A healthy coastal ecosystem sustains life from the sand to the sky. The very beaches where sea turtles nest also serve as crucial stopovers for incredible migratory birds.
@sanchezmendozamanuel grew up right here on the Osa Peninsula. His lifelong connection to this land is reflected in his photography.
