The scariest thing in the backcountry isn't ghosts. It's terrain traps. 🎃
→ Gullies and creek beds: small slides pile up deep
→ Cliffs below a slope: a small slide, big consequences
→ Trees: getting carried through timber
→ Benches and road cuts: debris stops and stacks
Spotting them is one of the first things we teach on AST 1.

October on the Chief hits different.
Cool air, sticky granite, quiet belay ledges. Fall is when guides get excited, because the friction is the best it gets all year.
The catch: the rain is coming. We usually get a few more good weeks.
Want one last big route before winter? Private days are open. Link in bio.
New on the blog: why October might be the best month to climb in Squamish.

Ten frames from a season in the mountains, summit high-fives, big peaks and long days on Squamish granite. Thank you to every client who roped up with us this year.
See yourself in here? Tag yourself and your climbing partner.
Fall climbing days still open. Link in bio.

Last month, I took a 4 Day Advanced Mountaineering Course with @altusmtnguides
Over the 4 days we covered things like glacier travel and crevasse rescue skills, short roping on alpine rock, transitions between travel modes (glacier, snow, rock), routefinding, pitched snow climbing, technical descents, and decision making in complex terrain.
We got heli-ed in to the Tantalus Range, a mountain range just across from Squamish that is a mountaineers playground, with many glaciers, serrated peaks, and mixed snow/rock objectives.
The perfect place to teach mountaineering skills.
The course was a mixture of sandboxed learning in safe environments to learn skills, and then putting everything into practice by heading out on real alpine objectives.
Having started dipping my toe into alpine objectives with a couple guided climbs last year in South America (Cotopaxi (5,897m) in Ecuador & Huayna Potosi (6,088m) in Bolivia)
and having started to really dive into scrambling last year, it felt time to have some formal education so I could start tackling increasingly complex peaks safely.
Especially as my ambitions evolve.
The alpine environment is very different from what I’m used to in rock climbing. The rock is way chossier, the routes are often not well defined, there are way more hazards, and you often have to deal with glaciers and snow.
There’s a lot more decision-making involved to manage risk and strike the balance between safety and speed.
Leaving this course, I definitely feel more confident heading into the alpine. I feel equipped with a good base of skills to stay safe in the mountains, to recognize the areas of knowledge that I still lack, and perhaps most importantly, to recognize when the risk is beyond my current ability to manage and call it a day.
Shoutout to Ross & Drew for being fantastic guides.
If you’re interested in venturing into the alpine, I would highly recommend taking a course with Altus.
They provide a wide range of courses led by fully-certified ACMG/IFMGA guides covering mountain skills in climbing, skiing, and mountaineering - as well as custom guided trips or courses.
Check them out for your next mountain adventure!

Did the annual Sir Donald lap yesterday. Perfect weather and a great team made for a very civilized day in the hills.
Great to work with @altusmtnguides and @phatburgerinparadise on this one. And nice hanging out at the bivy with @girthhitchguiding.

Mount Sir Donald NW ridge undoubtedly one of the most classic modern alpine routes anywhere. A great recent trip with a great group.
