The score for Whalefall is anchored by the human voice. Wordless vocals act as a Greek chorus throughout the film, a counterbalance to the intensely masculine father-son survival story. They appear at the film’s deepest inflection points. Watching @ourtonality and @alexanderlblake breathe life into this score was magical. Did not know this photo was ever possible. But I always had a dream of conducting in a studio once I heard about the musicians and their collaborations in these projects. The dream becomes possible with the advocacy and championing of others. Grateful to friends like @joecomposer (among so many!) who do not only encourage me to reach for all the aspirations but go further to create the opportunities to do so. The Ahmaud Theme occurs throughout the piece, “Running From, Running To: A Musical Reflection on Ahmaud Arbery”. 🎼 Much like Bach embedded his own name as a motif in his compositions, @alexanderlblake did the same for the eight-movement work honoring the life of Ahmaud Arbery! The solo cello line is the first phrase heard in the piece, introducing the Ahmaud theme. 🎻 In the last movement, “Running Free”, the choir is heard in the development of the piece, spelling out Ahmaud’s name.
