With this weekend marking both #WorldHomelessDay (10 Oct) and #NationalComingOutDay (11 Oct), we celebrate the joy queer people experience when they are able to live as their authentic selves—but we're also reminded of the many LGBTQ+ young people who still don't feel safe to come out.
We see a lot of them at the start of their journey; many cite family issues and threats of abuse or violence related to their identity as the reason they're at risk of or experiencing homelessness. They've been let down by the system and often by other services first, before turning to akt for help.
Today, we're launching our new 5-year strategy, Home and Hope, to get more LGBTQ+ 16-25 year olds into safe and stable homes by scoping out sustainable pathways for change. Produced in collaboration with our young people and our supporters, this strategy reaffirms our commitment to lowering rates of LGBTQ+ youth homelessness through prevention, digital and legal support, advocacy work, passionate people, and most of all: listening to what young people really need.

Manchester is where akt began. From the legacy of Albert Kennedy to the work we do today, this community has always been at the heart of who we are.🐝💜
But while so much has changed, we still need our community to show up: and now more than ever.
Cath Hall founded akt believing that, one day, LGBTQ+ young people wouldn’t be made homeless simply for being themselves. Sadly, that day hasn’t come yet.
❗1 in 4 young LGBTQ+ people will still experience homelessness.
So today as we celebrate Pride, we’re asking our Manchester family to turn pride into action.

We were honoured to speak with longtime akt patron, the incomparable actor and activist: @ianmckellen .
Listen as Ian reflects on attending his first Pride in his late 40s; and the joy, acceptance and sense of belonging he found there.
He reminded us to focus our energy on the extraordinary number of people who come together to celebrate, support and uplift the LGBTQ+ community.
We couldn't agree more. Pride has always been about community, and there's real power in showing up for one another.

Another little look back at a very special day at Proud Place in Manchester with our wonderful friends at @aktcharity 💗
Stories were shared, many laughs were had, and Sam had the warmest welcome from akt and the amazing young people they support.
We loved every minute of being together and seeing the incredible work akt does for LGBTQIA+ young people. Work that is so important, and that we’re very proud to support.

This #BisexualAwarenessWeek & #BiVisibilityDay, we’re resharing a message that still matters.
Bisexual young people face erasure, invalidation and harmful stereotypes, often alongside stigma from both within and outside LGBTQ+ communities.
So we’re revisiting some of the biggest myths about being bi+ and sharing simple ways allies can show up and make a difference.
Because these myths haven’t disappeared, and neither has the need to challenge them. 🩷💜💙

I DID THE DEED!

3 months of fundraising… and I did it. Thanks to all of you amazing people that donated and helped, because of you and the amazing fundraising efforts… I managed to smash my target and raise… £1,200!!!! What an amazing result! I am so so overwhelmed by the donations given by the amazing people that contributed, and also the words of encouragement and support.

And a HUGE thank you to my barber @rachelthegymmadbarber for shaving my head at 9am in the morning! You did an amazing job and thank you so much shaving my barnet with good cheer and laughter.

Yesterday was the day… and all I can say is…. DAMN IT’S COLD!! 🤣 But it was all for an amazing cause and all the amazing stuff that @aktcharity do to help change people’s lives!

The money raised will go towards giving a safe place for LGBTQIA+ youth, currently experiencing homelessness or at risk of being placed in it.

A little more love from Manchester! While in the city for To Be Free, Sam spent a very special day with our UK show partners, @aktcharity at Proud Place. They met some of the incredible young people akt supports, listening to their stories and seeing their vital work firsthand.
With support from The Pink House Foundation, akt is expanding its digital services and developing its Live Chat provision, helping more LGBTQIA+ young people access support outside regular hours, whenever they need it most.
Thank you to everyone at akt for welcoming us so warmly. We loved spending time with you. And to everyone joining Sam at the To Be Free shows at the London Coliseum this week, come and say hello to us and akt at the Pink House stand in the gift shop until 19 September!
