On Oct 21, 2026, my mentor in art, Japanese art historian Prof. Nobuo Tsuji, visited my studio for the first time in a year. He came to see the model of the Sazaedō-inspired structure I’m building for my solo show opening on Dec 5 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, to see what’s going on at my studio, and to recharge. As soon as he came up to the studio, he began talking over the Sazaedō maquette. I asked, “Prof. Tsuji, do you know the Guggenheim’s spiral in New York?” “Of course! Frank Lloyd Wright never said so, but he did work in Japan, so maybe the idea came from the Sazaedō in Fukushima. Western architecture has nothing like it.” “But Wright’s is a single spiral, not a double, and you ride an elevator.” I said, “Mine is a double helix, just like the Sazaedō.” “Oh, interesting!” He then saw two monumental paintings for the show: my copy of Kanō Eitoku’s “Uesugi Rakuchū-Rakugai-zu Byōbu” and the 25m “Judgement Day”, first unveiled at the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco in 2023. And also the 46 works after Hokusai’s “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.” He said, “There’s a superb waterfall in Hokusai Manga. Why not copy it your way? It’s amazing. Make it big. Oh, let’s go see the original together!” And with our next appointment set, he left. At 94, he was as incredibly energetic as ever. 2026年10月21日、私の師匠、美術、アート、芸術の師匠の日本美術史家、辻惟雄先生が、一年ぶりに私の工房に来てくださいました。目的は、12月4日からオープンするニューサウスウェールズ州立美術館での私の個展で、サザエ堂を模した建造物を作っているということで、それのモデルも見ながら、現在の私の工房のあれこれをご覧になって、英気を養おうということでした。私の工房の2階にエレベーターで上がって来られるなり、サザエ堂のマケットを見ながら、いろいろお話してくださいました。私の方から「辻先生、ニューヨークのグッゲンハイムミュージアムのトルネード知ってます？」と言ったら「知ってるよ！フランク・ロイド・ライトは何も言ってないけど、戦争の前後で、日本で仕事していたから、もしかしたら、福島のサザエ堂を見てアイデアが出たんじゃないかな。だってあんな構造、建築で西洋にないでしょう」「ただ、フランク・ロイド・ライトは、二重螺旋構造ではなく一重で、昇降はエレベーターだったね」と仰ったので、「私のは、サザエ堂のそのまんまの二重螺旋構造なんですよ」と言うと、「ほう、面白いね」と仰っていただきました。それから、美術館の展覧会用の超大作を2作、見ていただきました。狩野永徳が作った『上杉本洛中洛外図屏風』の模写と、2023年のサンフランシスコ・アジア美術館での展覧会開催時に発表した『審判の日（Judgement Day）』という25ｍ作品。そして、北斎の富嶽三十六景の模写シリーズ46作を見ていただきました。辻先生は「北斎漫画の滝の絵で素晴らしい作品があって、村上さんなりに模写したらどうかな。あれはすごい。大きな絵にしたらいいんじゃないかな。そうだ今度、一緒に北斎漫画の現物を見に行こう！」と次のアポまで取ってしまって、お帰りになられました。相変わらず、辻先生は94歳とは思えないほど、大変にお元気でした。 3,338 likes · 30 comments · 01 Nov 2026
