I grew up riding horses, but never had any draft experience. When I moved to Saskatchewan and bought my farm, I took out such a huge land mortgage there was nothing left for a tractor. An old team of Belgians – Rocky and Jay – with an electric winch bale-sled were my naĆÆve solution to unrolling big round bales every day without any equipment debt. I spent five years choring with Rocky and Jay until they got too old and they retired to sleigh rides around Grassland National Park. That was the year Grandma died. During university years, Grandma might gift money in an envelope. She’d always have a twinkle in her eyes and lean in and tell me ā€œdon’t spend it on anything responsible.ā€ I’m not sure if she told that to all her grandkids or if she just knew I was a tightwad who needed a little extra encouragement to do something wild. When she died she left me one last gift. It was a time in my farm career where there was no shortage of need for extra money. There were repairs and improvements to make… but mostly I was feeding 150 cows the coming winter and Rocky and Jay were gone and I still didn’t have a tractor. Grandma’s last gift was smart for a down payment on a little reliable tractor. But I heard her words … ā€œDon’t spend it on anything responsibleā€. She wouldn’t mean for me to be foolish. She knew when things needed to be looked after and her people were always taken care of. I think she was telling me that once I’ve looked after my responsibilities to pay attention to the things that set my heart on fire. The tractor was responsible but the two full-sister bay roan mares that caught my eye for sale when I was home in BC for the funeral definately were not. So I spent the next 5 years on the farm still without a tractor. Anything that needed to be moved or chores to be done, Pepper, Liz and I handled it. My heart was on fire this week with the horses and Pepper’s first filly - Courtney - now means I’ll have a reminder of Grandmas words for a lifetime. When given the chance, run so damn wild after what sets your heart on fire. Grandma said so. 06 Nov 2026 My hallucinations at Divide 200 were pretty mild this year. Somewhere around mile 120 a lady appeared staring at me out from the trees. She just watched me pleasantly from the very edge of the treeline. Once I got close to her, she was gone. I saw them 8 or 9 times along the trail these ladies of the forest. A different lady each time They were positive energy and they just looked at me carefully, as if they were watching over me. One of them was green and dead - clearly a zombie - but even she was pleasant, encouraging energy. 200 miles 44,000 feet of climbing 72 hours. 6 hamburgers and 4 quesadillas @sinister_sports 17 Sep 2026 I’m used to these big races breaking my body, but last year when I DNFd #Divide200 around mile 120 it kinda broke my heart. The mental part is the most fascinating (and most important) part for me and I think it was the pre-race mental framing that I got so wrong. I wanted to push my limit and told myself ā€œto the well.ā€ But when it got too hard, my mind easily acknowledged that the well had gone dry… there wasnt even the slightest mental pivot or problem solving effort. I had already framed my subconscious mind that this is the part where it’s over. But in real life, relying solely on a single well is pretty stupid water security planning. On the farm there is a well, but I have a dugout for storing extra surface water. There’s also a back-up pump and shallow pipe system to move water from the lake to the dugout in a disastrous drought. Beyond water storage on the surface, I also incorporate the principles of soil health to increase the water holding capacity of soil knowing that higher organic matter soil holds more plant-available moisture in between rain events. To prepare for the droughts and dry spells that come, the farm has a holistic system of built-out infrastructure, excess capacity, reservoirs and back-up alternatives. So since last year, I’ve building an entire mental infrastructure system of water security. Relentless climbs at UTMB Thailand, Hurt, Mt Fuji, Western States and Crazy Mountain have built the mental cisterns, canals and reservoirs. I’ve ran conservatively and I’ve ran recklessly to get to know my mental water capacity and the responsible flow rate of these systems. So once again ā€œto the well.ā€ But it’s 200 miles, I know it’s gonna run dry, it should, expect it to. There will be droughts and dust bowls out there. Im setting the subconscious ready to manage the flow …. A mental valve is there to open up the gravity fed back-up reservoirs. To prime the dugout pump. To open the canals. There’s even a hand jack pump in my mental toolkit to crank out the last droplets in those final miles. Once again, go ā€œTo the wellā€ But then, ā€œOpen the damā€ 200 miles. 44,000’ ā¬†ļø Monday 8am startline. 08 Aug 2026 100 miles is too much, Thankfully we’re too muchier. I wouldn’t have made it to the finish line of that one without Courtney and her dilusuonal belief in me ā¤ļø. Even if I have to wheelbarrow her up Conical, she’s there at the startline and there at the finish 🄰. This was our fourth race of alternating who’s the runner and who’s the pacer and where we spend at least 5-6 miles of each pacer segment plotting and choreographing for when we see the next race photographer. What are we signing up for next Courtney? It’s my turn to be the wheelbarrow. @courtney_bowen_ @crazymountainultra šŸ“ø @sarahattar 04 Aug 2026 These races are so long, And so much can go wrong, They can fall to shit so quickly, there’s probably no such thing as a perfect race. Only perfect moments. With the best of people. @crazymountainultra @dehaan_ranch @western_workouts @courtney_bowen_ @mtnfitjess @benquist12 @morgan_beavers__mt 04 Aug 2026 We have, quite possibly the best advice we’ve ever heard for this race… Never mind the fact that the only storm in the great state of Montana on the eve for the race, was quite literally traveling directly over us! 27 Jul 2026 The plan is to blow up and burn chasing the sun tommorrow. I know patience, gratitude and love are the most efficient ways for me to move through 100 mile races, but tommorrow I’m hoping to demolish myself. Not in a self-hating ā€œpunish myself/make me hurtā€ way … but in a ā€œthere’s more in you than you’ll ever even let yourself believe but you gotta go find itā€ way. Like come on Stuart, enough of this half-ass self-belief bullshit. Stop the safe, sandbagging that protects the ego and protects the finish line… on and off the trails. Actually mostly off the trails… this is rarely ever actually about the running… stop being so damn safe. Sunlight in the sunlight is the goal - to see the mile 60 mountain pass still in some daylight. A day of racing the sun and questioning that maybe Icarus knew exactly what he was doing and that burning up is worth the risk. So pack the love and gratitude in your vest like always … but tommorrow morning, Stuart … let’s go blow some shit up. Live tracking bib 33 https://trackleaders.com/crazymtn100-26 23 Jul 2026 At the pre-race meeting the race director told us ā€œLet them love you. Share it back generously. It’s all just a long love letterā€ I am so in love with this sport and its people. Thank you Libby and the whole @theactivejoe community for believing me and having me on the startline. @libbyruns, @maryarnoldnyc , @juliaallredbikes crew support and pacers @maddventures19 and @heidi_frehlich were such a wonderful team to pull me towards the finish line and I’m so grateful to each of them. Thank you also to my coach Michelle KwanšŸ˜‚. Even if she didn’t know it, she was one of the first to inspire me in sports, kept me focused through this training block and navigated good decision making for me on the course when I’d ask ā€œWWMKD?ā€ It’s wild the effect people can have on others’ lives without even knowing. And the volunteers ā¤ļøā¤ļøā€¦. I heard it said some people only reach the finish line because the volunteers want it so bad. I believe it. I will forever remember the line of volunteers standing in the cold water along across the American River to keep us safe and urge us forward… not just the sight of them but how they made me feel. There’s some wild magic when strangers believe in your goals more than you do…. Thats a type of love I want to carry forward. Western States was a dream and now a deep lifetime memory. Thank you. @wser @michellewkwan 02 Jul 2026 The World Cup, Wimbledon, The Kentucky Derby In ultrarunning, it’s Western States 100 - the most iconic and competitive race of North American ultrarunning. The Olympics of ultras. Have you seen that meme that floats around during the Olympics… the one that says in every sport there should be some average joe who competes so we can all understand how hard the event actually is. Thats kinda how I see my role tomorrow as I line up with the Greats like Killian and Jim and young superstars like Hans. I’ll be hours behind and probably hanging on for dear life … but I’ve trained and put in the work to do MY best. In the last 4 months I’ve averaged 71 miles weekly and near daily strength training sessions to bank as much fitness as I can for tomorrow. Yeah, I know. It’s all bit much for some mid-pack adult recreational runner … but you don’t need to be Elite or an Olympic hopeful to chase a wild goal or dream…. dreams aren’t worth chasing because of a potential win or or a super talent or a gold medal... Dreams are worth chasing cause they’re yours. Tommorow I’ll be trying to move through 100 miles efficiently with joy and gratitude and all the values of @theactivejoe community - environmental values and reverence for the trails we run, intentional inclusion and respect for the people we meet out on the trails… And of course I’ll be embracing the ā€œJoe mentalityā€ - the belief that average, everyday people can do wild and amazing things when we just keep going. @theactivejoe @wser 26 Jun 2026 Tomorrow, Stuart will step onto the starting line at Western States 100. šŸžļø The training. The challenges. The excitement. The nerves. And the social media shout out from an icon😁 Most of all, the belief that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. We’re proud to support Stuart as he takes on one of the most iconic races in our sport. Stay tuned all day tomorrow for live updates as he makes his way from Olympic Valley to Auburn. šŸ’œšŸ”ļø #WesternStates100 #TheActiveJoe #TrailRunning 26 Jun 2026 ā€œThe biggest mistake I’ve ever made in the past was to hold backā€ -Michelle Kwan It’s race week. Western States 100 miles from Olympic valley to Auburn starts early Saturday morning. Just like throughout my entire training block, I’ve asked my pacer @maddventures19 to ask me when I’m struggling… ā€œWhat would Michelle Kwan do?ā€ @theactivejoe @wser @michellewkwan 23 Jun 2026 80 miles this past weekend was the last big effort of my ā€œWhat Would Michelle Kwan Doā€ training plan for Western States 100. Michelle was a sports icon for me in the 90s and 2000s and I see her as an athlete who knew how to show up physically and mentally prepared and who knew ā€œhow to peak.ā€ Over the last 18 weeks - with Michelle as my coach šŸ˜‚ - I averaged 71 miles per week, did 102 strength sessions and 59 group-fitness interval classes. The work is done, and now - 11 days to race day - sleeping, resting and mental preparation are the focus. I’m pretty happy to be able to walk up to the startline knowing I ā€œdid my run-throughs.ā€ Even Dick Button would have good things to say. On the 27th, I’ll stand on the startline of the most iconic and revered race of North American ultrarunning and be ready to run 100 miles from Olympic Valley to Auburn. This is the Olympics or Kentucky Derby of our sport - and though I’m no Secretariat, thanks to @theactivejoe I am lucky enough to be running with him. I am visualizing hearing Puccini’s Tosca in my head with the intention of combining focus and determination with freedom and joy - just like the Kween. For this training block, I think Michelle would be proud. I am. ā¤ļø šŸ“ø @anothernate #ultra #ultramarathon #westernstates #westernstates100 @theactivejoe @wser @michellewkwan @barryscanada 16 Jun 2026
