I gave JR his first ever gallery show, at my tiny space on Greek Street in Soho. When I met him he was a kid pasting photographs illegally across Paris. Nobody in the art world would touch him. I didn't care — I'd never seen anything like it. He turned up, took over the whole building, pasted the shutters, the walls, floor to ceiling. The basement still had the paint peeling off the walls and his work looked better for it. He went on to win the TED Prize and become one of the most important artists on the planet. One of the proudest calls I ever made. It was like taking a sledgehammer to a walnut. When I first went to 3D's studio to talk about him showing with me, there were sketches and drawings everywhere — some of them walked on God knows how many times. I picked ten of the best off the floor and said "can I start with these?" I'm a total fanboy. The Bristol sound hit when I was about 15. As soon as I could, I was in the Moon Club listening to G and Milo DJ, riding buses all over town to photograph 3D's graffiti. So to say that night was a dream come true is a huge understatement. The launch itself was a players' ball — Nellee Hooper, Bobby Gillespie, and that's just naming two. More on that another day. When I first met him he could barely speak English — he was 21, just starting at one of the London art colleges. He came to me through one of my other artists. They're always aware of who's coming up, snapping at their heels, and they knew this guy, above all the others, had some serious talent. They were right. It's with great pride that I've watched how far he's flown since. The work he's making now is so complex and interesting — beyond anything I could have imagined when I first saw him. Well done, Alex. No idea why they were there. I just had to meet them. Turned up as ever — just me, no assistant, one camera bag. I think they were a bit disappointed. I think they were expecting a bit more care, love and attention. Instead they got the full Laz. We wandered around, tried a few different scenarios. And they might not have thought it was a proper shoot — but I tell you what, I got a proper photo out of it. Sign up for the mailing list — link in bio. 03 Nov 2026 BIZ MARKIE. London, late 90s. Shot in what's now the very fancy London EDITION. Back then it was the Berners — a proper grotty hotel off the back of Oxford Street. I was picture editor at Sleazenation and shooting most of the portraits myself, so I turned up with my camera and no plan. Biz was in a mischievous mood from the second I arrived. At one point he just ran off down the corridor pulling his t-shirt over his head, playing up to the camera the whole way. Easiest shoot I ever did. A lovely, lovely man. Nothing but fond memories. Mike Skinner, shot for a Jockey Slut cover just before Original Pirate Material went off. Sound on. It represents the 90's that me and you know about as much as a Telsa! Shame on everyone involved for taking corporate money and letting it dictate the show. As well as stealing what public money available. I wouldn't have minded so much if they'd called it Eds recollections 102 likes · 13 comments · 30 Oct 2026 2006. Days after we packed down the Banksy LA show, I was photographing Kurt Cobain's belongings. Guitars, clothes, everything. Only now, twenty years later, properly editing the archive, did I spot what was lying at the bottom of a guitar case. His English work permit. Kurt Cobain. Reduced to a government form. Course I would. We did it, it was quite a laugh — and my only price was two hours with him one Saturday morning. This is what came out of it. All you get is the eyes and a Gucci stud. @aitch 202 likes · 17 comments · 29 Oct 2026 Banksy under the Westway in West London. I shot a bunch of different scenarios of this . Banksy wanted to have a bunch of variations. This one never seen before. 655 likes · 22 comments · 28 Oct 2026 Futura. New York, late 90s. I'd been introduced to Mode 2 — the Michelangelo of the graffiti scene — and when I was heading to New York I asked if he could hook me up with Futura. I assumed the answer would be no. It was yes. He was up in the fashion district then, running a clothing company with his mate Stash. A guy called Blue worked there too — sadly no longer with us. I was a nobody. And I mean a nobody. And they could not have treated me better. I walked into a legend's studio and spent the day hanging out, shooting BB guns, chatting shit and taking photos. Twenty-odd years on, my thanks to Futura still stands — for making an absolute nobody feel like a king. The guy's a dude.
