Flights in this airplane are going to hit different now. The fuel tanks, these camera mounts, every control surface… So many rivets… Bill led it all, and Bill led us. He was a mentor through the process. He was there for our first pop of the river gun, and he was there with chock for the first engine run. That man worked hard his whole life - he served his country, got shot more than once, devoted his career to aircraft maintenance in all corners of the industry, and ultimately ended up at The Airplane Factory building Slings. He welcomed us to the build process; laid out every tool and turned to the morning’s page in the build manual. He had no shortage of cuss words and expletives… he was funny, and he made the monotony of pulling thousands of rivets entertaining, colorful, and unforgettable. We kept in touch with Bill after we flew home in our completed Sling, texting here and there, talking on the phone a couple of times… We talked about coming back out to fly him to Catalina; to take him on a trip. It weighs heavily on me that it’s too late now. I sent him a text two weeks ago just to see how life was going, but I hadn’t heard back, and I was just thinking a couple of days ago that I should just call him, but I hadn’t yet. Yesterday, we got a call from Jean and Mario at The Airplane Factory, and they told us with heavy hearts, that Bill had passed away. He was diagnosed with severe lung cancer just a couple of weeks ago, and his body just couldn’t fight it off. It was too late. Ever since that phone call, I can’t stop thinking about all the things we didn’t get to do with Bill, but nonetheless, I’m grateful for all the time we did get to spend with that man. Sometimes in life, we know it’s the last time for something; the last time you’ll be in this house, or the last day at that job. Most times, though, we don’t realize it’s the last time to be with that person. 04 Nov 2026
