Five years. I didn't even realize, but it's five years today. It's been an annual tradition to do some gardening at Spittal Pond, where my family and I planted a Bermuda Cedar Tree in memory of my dad, Craig. He died unexpectedly in October 2021. A few weeks ago, Adam and I pulled the weeds & invasives around "Dad's tree", the Agapanthus (African Lily/Lily of the Nile) my sisters also planted, and the bigger Cedar nearby (swipe for before and afters). This little bit of nature trail gardening (fully sanctioned by @bermudanationaltrust) always goes by quickly, but it is beautiful and meaningful work. Spittal Pond was my dad's favorite place on earth (OK... maybe Bermuda's beaches were *really* his favorite, but he loved THIS ONE place more than any other.) Being there brings peace, serenity, and connectedness. As each year passes, the grief gets easier to carry. Bermuda Carnival is my home!!! This year was very special for me, a spiritual homecoming, providing a deeper connection to my Caribbean familial roots. 2026 marked a return: seven years since the last time I played Mas (I really missed you), as well as the first time that my sweet love Adam joined me on the road. Carnival is more than a parade, soca music, parties, and pretty costumes (all of which I do love)... it's about freedom. It's about unity. It's about release. It's political. Carnival is part of my heritage and I'm deeply proud of that fact. I am one of the dearly loved granddaughters of a veritable Trinidadian Carnival Queen, calypso lover, costume maker, the one and only Gretta Pierre.
