We cannot thank Ania enough for taking time out to share her mysterious practice with us for this inspirational week and allowing us a glimpse into his creative mind and practice. Head over to her page @ania_tomicka to watch her narratives are personal, whilst remaining universal in theme, and are delivered to us by beautiful female protagonists who exist in dreamlike environments surrounded by ethereal beings, not all of whom appear to be friendly. She documents her artistic journey and development as an artist through her social media pages demonstrating her love of experimentation and study. She often posts glimpses of her investigations into a wide variety of media and her sketches, explaining her thoughts and process, and giving her followers an insight into how an artist works.

“I was halfway through my BA when I began to teach myself to paint from books; prior to this, I was into performance art but I became hooked by the gradual learning process of painting. I tried to learn as I imagined an apprentice might, but instead of having a master to learn from, I had books. I stood in front of paintings in museums for hours in order to figure out layering techniques; it was then through trial and error that I ended up with my own way of painting.” - Ben Ashton @benashtonart

"... Although, I am trying to do my best and I know I will be able to overcome my difficulties with practice. For example, I need to learn lots of things but now I am forcing myself to focus on alla prima male portraits; it’s really hard because I didn’t paint realistic portraits for over a decade, but I am improving and happy about it.”

History, memory and empathy, forces of nature and traces of man are the topics in Tacita Dean's @tacita_dean work, one of the most important artists of the present. Her work includes a variety of media, but she is best known for her engagement with photochemical film.

“My photography is a mix of conceptual, dreamlike and psychological themes. I use the art of photography to visualize reality in a poetic and symbolic way. I’ve always had an interest in photography since I was in school; I used to spend a lot of time looking at fashion and staged pictures. After I started my first full time job, I woke up one day and decided to offer myself a professional cam. My first journey was a 365 project whereby I committed on taking a photo every day in a row for a year. This is how my passion grew and photography became part of my life. I am happy with the way it all went. Photography grew from a hobby to a passion and semi-profession. I wouldn’t have had it in any other way. I learned it naturally and spontaneously. If it was imposed as a major or vocation, I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it that much.” - Lara Zankoul @larazankoul

“The most difficult aspect of my everyday life as an artist is to stay focused. It’s not easy for me, distractions are all over, and I was never able to stay focused on one thing for more than 30 minutes, even in school. Each day in my studio, I think about hundreds of new ideas or things I want to learn and I am still not able to find a good balance..." - Ania Tomicka @ania_tomicka

The German artist Daniel Richter #danielrichter first came to prominence in the 1990s when he transitioned into fine art from the world of music, where he began his career designing posters and record sleeves for bands. His early paintings were abstract, characterised by intensely colourful forms that lie somewhere between graffiti and intricate ornamentation. Figures began appearing in his works around 2002, often inspired by reproductions from newspapers or history books and rendered in bright colours that create an atmosphere of heightened awareness and artificiality. Ever the innovator, his recent works tread a path between figuration and abstraction, typified by the chaotic entanglements of fragmented bodies against simplified chromatic backgrounds.

“They’re everyone and no one. They’re a mirror of our consumer selves. Featureless, two-dimensional, often superficial; they’re attracted to the things which are artificial in our world, material things. But they are born from how we experience identity online; often anonymous and changeable. They’re defined by their choices. Most of the intimate portraits of these characters are within arms reach of a selfie stick. They might not have expressions but they have aspirations and desires. In my world, the Guinness Book of World Records is the Bible. I find humour in the pathos of these characters trying to reach beyond their two-dimensional limits. They appear self-conscious but they don’t have a self to be conscious about—in this way my paintings selfie the selfie—they reflect on our desire to externally stage our inner lives through the misdirections of the screen.” - Oli Epp @oli.epp

"Growing up I became very shy (I moved from Poland to Italy when I was 9) so I believe art was my way to say to the world: “I am here” but I don’t know if I was doing it on purpose or if it was just spontaneous. I also wanted to be very good and I started to be fascinated by the history of art and the painters' lives but I never thought about being an artist myself, it was just a thing I enjoyed doing a lot and that makes me happy.” - Ania Tomicka @ania_tomicka

Widely known for her in situ paintings, in which explosive color is sprayed directly onto architecture, interiors, and landscapes, Katharina Grosse @katharina_grosse embraces the events and incidents that arise as she works, opening up surfaces and spaces to the countless perceptual possibilities of the medium. Approaching painting as an experience in immersive subjectivity, she uses a spray gun, distancing the artistic act from the hand, and stylizing gesture as a propulsive mark.

“I don’t know if my work exists as a critical comment on the world around us, I think that is one of its ways, an unfailing one when it has been tried for decades to maintain honesty in it, as you say. And that honesty comes precisely from two fundamental motivations. The first is that critical line, a wake-up call to the problems of nature's pollution, of waste products generated by excessive consumerism. The second is more an idealization of nature, a cult to it that derives from my experience in meditation, because in meditation I have experienced being part of a whole and that nothing exists apart from us.”- Tomás Sánchez @tomassanchezstudio

“When I was a little child I remember myself with a pencil or a marker in my hand, it has always been that way and I am one of the lucky ones that never stopped drawing and painting. I used to be able to not go to bed early (“I can’t go to sleep, I need to finish this drawing!”) so it started to be a magic place only for myself, where I was able to do whatever I wanted." - Ania Tomicka @ania_tomicka
