Waited a decade to make my comeback on the big screen and I gotta say some journeys really do find their way back to you. The Ah Boys to Men movies changed my life in ways I could never have imagined. I was younger, still finding my way, and I had no idea that one film would become such a huge part of my life. So many years have passed. We’ve grown older, our lives have changed, and we’ve all walked our own paths. And somehow, mine has brought me back here. I’m incredibly grateful to finally announce that I’m officially part of the new cast of Ah Boys to Fire Fighters. This time, it’s a new uniform, a new character and a completely new chapter. But putting on that uniform and standing on set again brought back so many memories of where this journey first began. I’ll always be grateful to Ah Boys for the friendships, the memories, the opportunities and, most importantly, all of you who have supported me from those early days until today. Me: Papa is going to bring you to the dentist and pluck out all your dirty teeth. Reign: The dentist is a boy or a girl? Me: Girl. Reign: Ok girl one can. Me: 💀 When I was young I remember visiting the dentist was often a tramatising experience as usually the ones I saw where quite rough and often there was lots of blood. Hence, for reign’s first dental appointment, as a parent naturally I am concerned. Props to @burqq for making this such a fun experience for my son. I was even prepared that he might cry but he didn’t! What a brave boy. My favourite doctors are that would put the patient at ease and don’t seem jaded at what they do and burq is definitely one of them. And just like that, in the blink of an eye, I’ve wrapped filming for Ah Boys to Firefighters. Ah Boys to Men was the film that propelled my acting career and changed my life. I shot the first ABTM when I was 24. By the time the fifth instalment arrives in cinemas next year, I’ll be 40. Sometimes I struggle to comprehend just how much life has happened between those two numbers. I remember first hearing rumours that I might be cast in the new sequel. Nothing was confirmed, but I started training intensely and consistently anyway. I had ballooned to 73kg, and eventually dropped 7kg preparing for a role I didn’t even know for certain was mine yet. I just wanted to be ready if that call came. Actors seldom talk about the uncertainty behind all of this. Being part of the previous four movies doesn’t automatically guarantee you a place in the next one. Until everything is signed and confirmed, anything can happen. A change in direction, a misalignment in negotiations, and suddenly the character you thought you were playing may no longer exist in the script. And when I finally landed the role, I knew it still wasn’t time to celebrate. It simply meant the real work had begun. Endless rehearsals on my own, preparation, experimentation and figuring out how to turn words on a page into a living, breathing person. This time, the biggest challenge was creating someone who was the absolute opposite of Aloysius. Returning to set felt like coming home. I didn’t realise how much I missed this until I was back in it. It was special working alongside familiar faces again, but equally refreshing to share this journey with an almost entirely new cast. New personalities, new chemistry, new memories. When I was younger, I always looked forward to wrapping as soon as possible. Finish the scene. Finish the day. Finish the shoot. Go home. This time, I found myself doing the complete opposite. I wanted to savour the long hours. The exhaustion. The waiting. The difficult days. Even the moments when all I wanted was a shower and my bed. Because somewhere along the way, I realised these would be the things I would miss the most when it was all over. And maybe that’s what scares me a l 02 Oct 2026
