Representation matters. ❤️ I had such a meaningful evening at OCA-NY’s 50th Anniversary Gala — being there with my art, surrounded by so much history, culture, and community, and having my mom there beside me made the night feel especially full-circle. As a first-generation Chinese American, so much of my work has been shaped by questions of identity, belonging, and becoming. To share my art in a room that celebrates generations of Asian American voices felt deeply personal. @oca_ny And a very special thank you to @dmjuliesu for believing in my work and showing it so much warmth. I’m still a little blown away. 🥹 Grateful for the people who came before us, the people walking beside us, and the space we continue to create for those coming next. 02 Nov 2026 Happy 50 years, @oca_ny! Thank you for a beautiful evening! Back in college, as @ocanational’s first-ever intern, living in DC for the first time, returning decades later as a member of the President’s cabinet was beyond imagining. Now, as a relatively new New Yorker, the night with OCA-NY felt like coming home. Civil rights attorneys and activists from 30+ years ago, Liz Ouyang and Glenn Magpantay, were there, along with new friends June Jee, Senator @johnliuny, Assemblymembers @amgracelee and @ragaforqueens, and Councilmembers @cmlindalee and @cmshekar25, plus dinner with the incredible @thenyic President @heyitsmurad. That’s the power of community. The message all night was that representation matters. When people in government come from the communities they serve, policy isn’t abstract and inclusion doesn’t have to be forced. When decisions are made by communities, not for them, and not in fancy rooms at City Hall but in community centers & union halls, restaurants & bodegas, tenant meetings, parent gatherings & worker organizations, that’s how we build a city for all. As NYC’s first ever Chinese American Deputy Mayor and the first Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice, my position reflects @nycmayor’s vision for our city, that we should use every lever of city government to make it more just, and that we can and must build a world where those who have been forgotten and pushed to the margins are at the center of our politics and policies. Thank you also to @iamfionaliang for making beautiful moon artwork. And a most special thank you to dear friend @christinechendc, Executive Director of @APIAVote, who came up from DC for the event. Vote like your life depends on it. For so many people, it does. 🗳️ 01 Nov 2026 🎉 WE’RE SOLD OUT! 🎉 We’re celebrating 50 years of community, leadership, and service at our 50th Anniversary Community Service and Leadership Awards Gala this Friday, October 30, with more than 300 friends, colleagues, supporters, and community members joining us for this milestone occasion. Despite the possibility of rain, 40 members and friends from OCA-NJ, OCA-NY, OCA-WHV, and OCA-LI came together to enjoy a wonderful afternoon filled with fun, friendship, and camaraderie. One of the highlights of the picnic was a special presentation by Dr. Kit Cheung, educator, author, and researcher known for her work on classical Mahjong, who shared the history of Mahjong and taught our members how to play the game. Tables were set up for everyone to practice and enjoy Mahjong together, and many members had a great time learning, playing, and socializing. We were also honored to have the Bergen County Commissioner Mary Amoroso stop by to greet our group and welcome us to Bergen County. Ludi Hughes, Bergen County Community Relations Specialist and last year’s OCA-NJ Holiday Ball Honoree, was also there and reminded everyone about the importance of participating in the upcoming fall election. Overall, our annual picnic was a huge success. It was a wonderful opportunity for our members and friends to relax, connect, and enjoy each other’s company. The laughter, friendship, and camaraderie made the day truly special, and we look forward to another memorable picnic next year! 07 Oct 2026 For six decades, Tisa Chang has been a pioneering force in Asian American theater, as an actress, dancer, director, and founding artistic director of Pan Asian Repertory Theatre.
