My art show “New Day Rising” opened last month at @ABVGallery in Atlanta, and while in town, the crew and I were also able to paint “Justice Champion Coretta Scott King,” a mural of civil rights icon Coretta Scott King, the wife of Martin Luther King Jr., who kept vigorously organizing and pushing for change long after her husband was assassinated. The mural sits across the street from the former Butler Street YMCA where Coretta and Dr. King often gathered with activists. We are seeing very troubling backsliding on civil rights, so do your part for democracy and make sure to always VOTE! I’m very grateful to Nate and Greg Mike from ABV Gallery for their help facilitating this project as well as the @butlerstreetcdc, @gormanusa, and Sweet Auburn Grande.

“Justice in Bloom,” my upcoming solo show with @heythere_projects in Joshua Tree focuses on possibility, new growth, hope, and justice. Joshua Tree’s natural beauty highlights the resilience of nature even within challenging conditions providing a metaphor for the current social justice challenges our society faces. Despite the challenges, there is opportunity for rebirth, renewal, and progress; justice can constantly bloom if we cultivate it! -Shepard

Today is Election Day and every vote counts. Democracy doesn’t work as well as it should because voter turnout is not as high as it should be. Voter apathy means that deep-pocketed and influential forces can wield more influence within the system. Not participating makes this dynamic worse. Our system is far from perfect, but it will be greatly improved if we had 100% voter turnout. For anyone who feels that their needs or ideals are not met within the system, the only choice is to get more involved, because though it may work slowly and not deliver everything one wants, democracy is the mechanism to shape the systems of our society. If you need help voting, visit VOTE.org for resources to ensure your voice is heard in this important election.

This new screen print is based on the fine art I created specifically for my solo show “New Day Rising”, which opened at @ABVGallery in Atlanta, Georgia last month. Along with being a big fan of the Hüsker Dü album “New Day Rising”, I was inspired by my philosophy that even during difficult times, the future holds possibility and hope. Every day is an opportunity for rebirth, resilience, and to create something better than what we currently have in the world. The possibility of change begins with recognizing what needs to change. I think it’s important to question systems of power while pointing toward something more harmonious and acting daily to manifest our ideals. -Shepard

I’ve been a big fan of @tompettyofficial since I first heard “Refugee” and “Don’t Do Me Like That” on the radio as a nine-year-old kid. My Appreciation for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers has only grown over the years as I’ve come to understand the power of Tom’s empathy for the underdog in his storytelling and the band’s dynamic chemistry in their musical arrangements and performances. I was lucky enough to work with Tom on several projects before he passed, and I was honored when Adria Petty reached out to me to illustrate a portrait of her dad for the cover of the “Tom Petty: An American Treasure” box set. With this year marking 50 years since the release of the first Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album, Adria approached me again to create an early career portrait of Tom as a young man hungry to break through with his music and voice. I made this portrait of Tom to capture the intensity, attitude, and vigor of his early career. Those traits persisted and were eventually widely recognized as a tenacious working-class ethic, but the Heartbreakers’ debut album wasn’t an immediate hit, despite featuring the now-classic “American Girl” and “Breakdown.” I’ve always admired independence, determination, and vision, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had all those things in spades.
Through this collaboration with Tom Petty’s estate, we are proud to support @aclu_nationwide in their efforts to ensure that every eligible voter has the information and the right to cast their ballot and have their vote counted. Please support the ACLU and www.aclu.org/vote for any pertinent voting information for this election!
Thanks, Tom, for 50 years of music and mojo, and for never backing down!

VOTE YES ON PROP40! The California Billionaire Tax is essentially the billionaires’ wealth versus everyone else’s health. As a Type-1 Diabetic, I rely on medication daily. When you need care, you need it now. But even though we live in a state of extraordinary wealth, our care is at risk. We have every right to demand better, and we have a chance to vote for it RIGHT NOW, in this election!
I created this artwork for the movement and for the people fighting to keep our communities healthy. I hope someone walking past will stop, look, and feel they have a part in this fight too! This election, we have the opportunity to unite around a common purpose and change the course of history. Let’s turn energy into votes; let’s make billionaires pay their fair share.
Thanks for caring and thanks for making your voice heard. VOTE!

I love Joshua Tree and I have been inspired by the natural beauty there to create several environmentally themed artworks. The exhibition, “Justice in Bloom,” my upcoming solo show with @heythere_projects in Joshua Tree focuses on possibility, new growth, hope, and justice, all things I feel are important to aspire to in today’s world. Joshua Tree’s natural beauty highlights the resilience of nature even within challenging conditions providing a metaphor for the current social justice challenges our society faces. Despite the challenges, there is opportunity for rebirth, renewal, and progress; justice can constantly bloom if we cultivate it!
The artworks in the show include unique mixed media works on paper, but also focus on the importance of printed material in my art and include HPM (Hand Painted Multiple),serigraphs on paper and wood, as well as prints on metal.
Justice in Bloom opens Saturday, Nov 14

From Shepard Fairey:
I first heard the Cramps courtesy of my friend Bill Hussey in 1985. He lent me the tape of the Cramps’ album Bad Music for Bad People. I loved the cover art, so I was intrigued to hear it. I vividly remember listening to”Garbageman” on my boombox for the first time as I was setting up a new skateboard. I was slightly unsure about the twanginess of it, because anything with a country flavor to it was seen as supremely un-punk. Fortunately, “Garbageman” began with the lyrics “You ain’t no punk, you punk… you wanna talk about the real junk”, which gave the Cramps enough punk cred for me to give their music a chance. Bad Music for Bad People is a definitive classic album with songs like “Human Fly,” “Love Me,” and “Uranium Rock.” I was also intrigued that the founders of the band, Lux Interior, and Poison Ivy Rorschach were romantic partners. There were not that many women in punk bands and Poison Ivy was as cool as they come… with beauty and style for miles! I love the Cramps’ distinctive visuals. From their cover art to photoshoots, the Cramps had a dark, campy Rockabilly goth image with a pinch of sexiness in lead guitarist Poison Ivy, who always wore fishnet stockings and never seemed to age. I saw the Cramps a couple times in Providence, including on their 1990 Stay Sick! tour. That show was one of the best I’ve ever seen, with lead singer Lux Interior climbing up the speaker stacks, humping them and, and jumping back to the stage, all while perfectly maintaining his black magic possessed Elvis vocals. Poison Ivy made perfect fuzzed out riffs look effortless and she happened to have her normally curly hair straightened on that tour. I feel very lucky that photographer Huib Rutten was willing to let me illustrate from his fantastic photo of Poison Ivy from the same era. I think the Cramps are one of the greatest bands ever and exuded a primal sleazy swagger with unique wit and style.
