A long time ago in a different life (or at least it feels that way) I was riding in a car at night with @whereissionnie to meet up with @ruthielindsey and @1924us for bonfires and general cabin shenanigans outside of Nashville.
I remember the drive so well. It’s a conversation that always stuck with me. We talked about trauma and crisis. And I don’t know much, but I shared the only thing I know, a thing that has served me well through the natural undulations life is bound to bring.
And that is simply sometimes you have to cling to the mast. You aren’t doing anything but surviving but that’s the most important work of all. Because the storm WILL pass. And you‘ll be left standing.
And when it does you can mend the sails. Untangle the ropes. And get on with the business of sailing.
I’ve learned to give myself permission to do nothing but make it through. To sleep a little too late. To dance in front of the mirror and feel myself even when I look ridiculous. To load and unload the dishwasher and allow that to be a great victory. To dress like a cartoon character in nothing but white t-shirts and denim shorts. To eat mac & cheese from a box and frozen chicken nuggets sometimes. To not respond to text messages. To flail and get back up over and over. To ask for help. A lot.
And also permission to feel it all. Rage. Grief. Joy. Hope and hopelessness. And sometimes all within the span of a few minutes.
And most of all, whether navigating calm waters or stormy ones, what matters more than anything is the crew you’re doing it with. Surround yourself with solid people.
People that challenge you with compassion. And humor. People whose strengths buttress your weakness. People that don’t judge you. That believe in you even when you think they’re maniacs for doing so.
I know a disproportionate amount of us have had rough seas this year. Cling to the mast in the storm. Choose your crew wisely. No storm ever lasted forever. But there never was a last storm in the world. Accept that they will come and be prepared.

Hey guys. I know my absence from our community this summer has been conspicuous. But here’s the truth: sometimes in a rough season it’s better to be quiet rather than say something ill conceived.
So. Suffice to say. This summer has been a rough season in my life. And this go around I chose to embrace quiet.
Please know, I needed to say *something* just as much as I need to not say *everything* right now because I’m sure people have noticed my silence but I need time to process.
My life is in the process of evolving, being reborn. And labor is painful. And messy. And kinda undignified sometimes. But I know with every ounce of my heart that what is waiting on the other side is amazing. And I can’t wait to share it with you.
As I navigate through this as a real human in the real world please don’t ask or judge. Simply hold space if you can. I trust this community. You’ve seen me through a million transformations. And I just needed to acknowledge the obvious: I‘ve been quiet because I'm hurting. But I'm healing. And have a ton of hope.
No one is dead or dying. Everyone is safe and in good health. I‘m so grateful for you all. And please know I'm surrounded by a loving real life community of family and friends.
It’s been *quite* the year for all of us. But I think we’ve all got this. We can find the good.

🍘NEW RECIPE🍘 Sweet Corn & Pimento Cheese Arancini, a southern meets Sicilian riff on Italian stuffed rice balls. Get the recipe via the link in my bio along with a little update on my very southern summer and finding joy.
The Sweet Corn Risotto that forms the base of these is reason enough to make it. We served it topped with seared scallops (I think grilled shrimp would be great too, a bit of a nod to shrimp & grits) and a few fresh thyme leaves and then used the leftovers to make these crispy, creamy, cheesy snacks the next day. We mixed bacon in with a spicy pimento cheese because bacon, but if you leave it out and use veggie stock these are vegetarian friendly.
Best part of these is that they freeze really well and can be fried up straight from frozen for a super easy appetizer. Served with either marinara, hot pepper jelly (southern AF), or just eaten alone they’re dangerously addictive, and we most definitely ate way too many.
Next I want to try a Japanese inspired version filled with pork gyoza filling and do a miso mushroom risotto using dashi as the stock. There are literally endless variations you can do here, but sweet corn, bacon, and pimento cheese is definitely choice. #localmilkrecipes #eatmoremagic #theartofslowliving

Soddy Daisy daze. Yesterday Eula and I splashed in the creek, painted and ate popsicles with @iamericamerica & @sugarbyliv (aka @american.sugar), and had grilled cheese sandwiches for breakfast.
This week there were play dates and pool days. Nerf gun battles and kiddie pools. Black fingernails. Tubing down a lazy river. Sloppy chili cheese dogs with yellow mustard. Twice. And much grilling.
Ribeyes were grilled in Dale’s cause if it ain’t broke don’t fix it and eaten with caramelized summer squash. Smokey oysters topped with spicy pimento cheese and bacon. Mushrooms stuffed with clams. 5 hour smoked pork ribs doused in a Korean BBQ inspired marinade destined for fluffy, homemade streamed bao buns.
Now I find myself creek side again, writing this before I gracelessly scramble down boulders to float in clear water and escape the oppressive heat. #theartofslowliving #livemoremagic #southernsummer

After over 8 weeks locked in rooms alone during a global pandemic with nothing but a cell phone to keep me company, I decided to sit the screen down for a month and go outside.
I wore cut off Levi’s and a white t-shirt and stumbled over boulders and down rocky embankments to waterfalls and swimming holes. Sometimes with a bottle or some beer. Sometimes not. Always with good company.
No pretense. No perfectly styled picnics. No designer clothes. No fancy photos. It was country music with the windows down and pick up trucks. Greasy burgers and a pitcher by the river. Fried oysters and shrimp rolls too.
It was the type of golden, soft-focus summer time I remember as a kid, riding on the backs of motorcycles and jet skis or perched shotgun in a little boat cutting through the river islands at sunset. Wading into the rain swollen creek barefoot in my underwear. Sucking the marrow out of life without worrying about perfection.
It was the smell of sunscreen. The hot spatter of oil in a cast iron skillet for fried catfish & hush puppies. Watching a water snake wind through the reeds. Discovering a little Phoenix of a butterfly hidden in a pile of ashes.
And what I learned from my four weeks away from this digital world I’ve called home for so long, is that I deeply prefer the real world. I don’t intend to stop my adventures in Tennessee or otherwise or stop sharing them, but I’ve learned how to be present.
How to separate the art of living from the business of it. How to have boundaries and keep moments for myself. Whether it’s an afternoon swimming at the lake or hours spent laying on rocks in the sun as the water rushes around me.
The very act of living is a creative act, each choice we make a line in our book. But not every chapter is meant to be shared in its every anatomical detail laid out like a dissected frog on the table for the world to see.
I learned I don’t want my life to be my work. I don’t want my very existence to be some performance piece played out on this stage. Instead, I use this to share my work. Tell stories. But not all stories need to be told. They can simply be lived.

ART BY @thebloominglightbulb. While we continue to mute our own content to amplify Black voices, share useful information, and fund raise, we are extending the Course & Coaching Raffle for Black Lives Matter to Monday to give you more opportunities to donate! So far you’ve given over $2000...keep it coming.
We are offering a free spot in all our courses and a free one hour video call about the topic of your choosing for donating to the organization of your choice.
I have provided a list below, but we are by no means limiting entries to those charities. Also, during Pride month and every month, giving to organizations that specifically fight for and protect Black Trans lives is vital. There are a couple in the list below, and please share in the comments if you know of more.
The minimum donation to enter is $10 for one ticket. $20 gets you two. $50 gets you 5. And so on. Simply email proof of your donation to the organization of your choice below to [email protected] by MIDNIGHT on Wednesday, EDT. The winners will be chosen MONDAY morning. Keep going.
I’d also like to invite you to use the link in my profile to demand justice for Breonna Taylor, an award winning EMT gunned down by police in her own home. Her assailants have not been charged. The link will take you to a template, and all you need to do is fill in your name and hit send. It takes less than a minute. DM me once you’ve sent it! Our collective voice is loud. Use it.

AMPLIFY BLACK VOICES. We have decided to not participate in Black Out Tuesday after listening to feedback from the Black community. We will continue to not share our OWN content or voice BUT we will also continue to share resources and Black voices in support of Black Lives Matter. Muted doesn’t mean off the hook or silence. Feedback I’ve seen from Black leaders & community so far.
It was @tyalexander’s stories that convicted me. So go listen to those and follow her now before reading on for the feedback we are getting.
If you are using the BlackLivesMatter or BLM hashtag to share a black square or another non-essential post you are silencing Black voices and burying valuable protest information, news, and resources. Those hashtags are best used for vital information about protests, bail, news on the ground, and BLACK voices. @monicagreatgal.
Two, we have been admonished to stop saying “POC” and “BIPOC”. And start saying “Black people” in the on-going fight against police brutality and racism towards Black people in the US. Capitalize the B. @accordingtoweeze.
Do NOT DM, email, or otherwise impose upon Black people to educate you. Buy their books. Use the resources they’ve created. Ask yourself if your question can be googled. It is on US to do the work. Not ask them to do it for us. @amandaseales.
If you are of able body (this includes mental health) and can protest, show up. Protect black bodies. During a pandemic when the Black population has been hit hard, able mind & bodied non Blacks should be showing up for them.
To donate, click on my post that reads “Silence is Not an Option” for a list of organizations & a raffle for those that step up. For a starting place for black voices & creators to fill your feed, see my previous post. More in stories. Feedback and other messages that need to be amplified welcome in the comments. BLACK LIVES MATTER. Is this message flooding your feed? Your streets? I hope so. Keep listening.
In solidarity with the BIPOC communities, especially the black community which disproportionately suffers police brutality & death for the color of their skin, and inspired by the actions of others, I want to do what I can to use this platform and privilege to generate funds and to amplify black voices.
Our content will be postponed this week on Instagram, and instead we will be raffling off a free spot to ALL of our online courses AND a free one-to-one one hour video call for whatever you want to discuss—cooking, business, photography, life, it’s up to you. To win the raffle, all you have to do is DONATE. And if you have no interest in this raffle? Donate anyway if you have the means.
The minimum donation to enter is $10 for one ticket. $20 gets you two. $50 gets you 5. $100 gets you 10, so on. Simply email proof of your donation to the organization of your choice below to [email protected] by MIDNIGHT on Wednesday, EDT. The winners will be chosen Thursday morning. Let’s DO this.

I hope the comment section will not be filled with white fragility. Understand that you will never understand. If you are white it is time to listen, donate, protest, and educate yourself about what it means to be an ally and what it means to be anti-racist not merely non-racist. We will make mistakes. Do not get defensive when you do. Apologize and ask how you can do better.
We will be participating in #mutethewhitenoise founded by @blackandembodied and @jessicawilson.msrd and only sharing BIPOC voices, resources, and fund raising efforts throughout the week instead of our own content. #blacklivesmatter #justiceforgeorgefloyd #justiceforahmaud #silenceisnotanoption #amplifymelanatedvoices #blm #antiracism #structuralracism | artwork by @meghannstephenson

Silence isn’t an option. Text “FLOYD” to 55156 to sign the petition to demand that #GeorgeFloyd’s killers are continued to be held accountable. The petition is currently at 94% of its goal of 2.5 million signatures.
If you are white and privileged such as myself, I urge you to check out the link in profile for 75 Things White People Can Do For Racial Justice. It is not enough to hashtag and post on social media. It is something, but it isn’t enough. Call, donate, have the hard conversations with your white friends & family and listen to the stories of POC.
It isn’t a time to talk, it’s a time to listen. Scroll through the gallery for some really incisive thoughts I found on @mindbyfood’s page to get you started.
We have pushed our class release until Monday. Right now this is more important. I spent a LOT of time thinking about what to say, because as a white person, we need to think long and hard about our words before they come out of our mouths right now. This. Isn’t. About. You.
If you are shocked, don’t be. If you are surprised, you haven’t been paying attention. Overt and covert racism are alive and well and may be alive in you. That is the pill you must swallow for change.
This isn’t about your brand. Use your voice, however big or small, to keep the outrage alive. Be on the right side of history and speak up for those that can no longer.
He couldn’t breath. His name was George. His name was Ahmaud. Her name was Breonna. And countless, countless others. Say their names. #justiceforgeorgefloyd #justiceforahmaud #justiceforbreonnataylor #blacklivesmatter IMAGE BY @stuffgracemade

LUNCH. Sirloin, avo, and a riff on Italian salsa verde with a Japanese twist. Tomorrow I’m releasing a completely FREE mini-workshop on how you can take 10 minutes to turn daily moments into content using the tool in your hands right now: your phone. Link in bio to register for the free class! (The recipe is coming soon in a little quarantine compilation!) This wasn’t a photo shoot (obviously), it was just lunch.
But with my iPhone and about 60 seconds in @lightroom Mobile (a free app, not sponsored, just what I use), I was able to turn my lunch into content.
You do not need fancy equipment. You do not need hours upon hours of time. You need a phone, a window, a subject, and a couple of free apps. That’s it.
I’ve spent most of my career teaching DSLR photography and over the top styling. And if you want to take your content to the next level, those are still amazing tools. But you do not need them to start.
Click the link in my profile, sign up, and I’ll show you how I do it amidst days filled with everything from motherhood to running a business to existential dread.
The class does not require you to wear pants (trousers for my English audience! But I mean you don’t technically need to wear pants either depending on the company you keep ...) or get out of bed. All you have to do is show up and let me show you how to use these tools to share your content whether it’s cooking, lifestyle, your products, travel (well, one day again soon), or just YOU and your services.
Whatever it is you want to get out there, learning how to use your phone to it’s utmost potential and do so *quickly* is going to make your life easier.
It certainly has mine. And yeah, you know what? 2020 *has* been the dumpster fire to end all dumpster fires. But you know what else? Whoever said a Phoenix couldn’t rise out of a trash fire? No one. That’s who. So.
Don’t give up. Make some lunch. Or arrange some flowers. Or take a walk. Or do your make up and get dressed up with no where to go. Dance. Do yoga. Get creative. And document it with your phone. And share it with your story, your voice. And keep growing that dream. Link in profile! Don’t miss it! #livemoremagic

Have you ever dreamed of building a business on floral crowns and baking cakes? Long table gatherings and far flung retreats? Telling stories? Curating the everyday? Well, I did.
And the way I—an entirely eccentric college drop out from TN that had never touched a camera—made it reality was this app, this community—through the simple medium of words and images. No fancy videos. No complicated technology. Just a camera, a keyboard, and Lightroom.
And these days? It’s even simpler. Here’s the deal: while back in the day I used to take forever shooting and editing with a DSLR (and don’t get me wrong I still do!), now technology has gotten to the point where I can create and edit beautiful content using only my phone and 10 minutes of my time.
And I want to teach you how to do the same for FREE. On Friday I’ll be releasing my first ever free “The Art of Iphoneography for Instagram Masterclass”! Get on our mailing list via the link in profile to not miss the invite.
I have thought long and hard about how I can best serve this community during these challenging times, and I think the best I can do is empower you with the skills to tell your own story, grow your own community, and build your own business so you can actually make a living doing something you love.
That might not be cookery, storytelling, and online education like me, but whatever your passion and niche is, you need to be able to create content to reach your potential followers and customers. And you are probably holding the most valuable tool to do that in your hands right now.
In the free class I’ll be showing you how I turn an everyday lunch into content, my tricks for getting the best shot with my phone, and how I edit in Lightroom Mobile in 60 seconds or less. I’ll also be sharing some VERY exciting news, namely how you will have the opportunity to start ANY of my online courses for under $50! Yep.
Click the link in profile to join our list and not miss it! I’ll also be going LIVE on Saturday as 12 PM EDT to do a Q&A answering ALL of your editing questions and going LIVE again on Sunday at 12 PM EDT for a cook & shoot along! Stay tuned for the recipe & ingredient list! #livemoremagic
